Why is it that nobody wants to play Magic by its regular rules, but everybody who plays the Pokemon TCG would play the game by its intended rules? I could probably think of some rules changes that would make the game way better, such changes adopted by games like Duel Masters, Cardfight Vanguard, and the Digimon TCG.

If people could figure out how to make a Commander-like game for Pokemon, I imagine it would be popular... But if that popularity would be sustainable for decades, who knows.

The Kaldhiem foils I got in the prerelease kits are not pringles. The Kaldhiem foils I got in normal draft boosters ARE pringles.

I just dont like the double faced cards in that quantity ... its so annoying to play with them in paper form, and even digital its bad when you have to click around all the time and only see the front side except you hover of the card ... its just so pointless and adds more text to cards for the sake of it ...
The amount of these cards just gets overwhelming and annoying, as it seems every set has like 20+ of them now ...

This is the last set with a large number of them for a while, per MaRo.

Land? FAH! Who needs land?! Said every active Boros player ever.

That last ability...dang. If you have 8 mana floating around it's a good way to populate the board after a foretold Doomskar.

That is what I was thinking. The last thing i want to do in a Boros deck is ditch my lands Gaping

Many of the silver bordered cards could be Black Bordered but they might require adjusting the rules and they do not feel like the rules revision is justified for the addition of a cool new mechanic (like Extremely Slow Zombie).

Universe Beyond is going to be cool. I already have friends who are into 40k and LotR asking me all about how to play commander.

The tables I play at and regular playgroup will ban all this universe beyond crap straight away just like TWD. That will suck for people coming to the store with these cards in their deck not being able to get in a game.

Then it sounds like the problem there would stem from your playgroup, no?

Sounds to me like the problem is Wizards making a mockery of the game and creating the false impression that this garbage will actually be accepted by everyone, no?

You better believe there will be a LOT of playgroups who will want to have nothing to do with ‘universe beyond’.

"Sorry new guy, but you can't play with anyone here because we collectively decided to not accept those Warhammer cards that are in your deck. I know it's not fair to you, but Wizards forced us to gatekeep you out of our group, so really it's their fault that you can't play, not ours."

That's more or less what you sound like from my perspective. You're free to disallow anyone with those cards from playing games with you, but I'm free to think that your playgroup is being whiny and immature for doing so.

Not allowing the Universe Beyond cards definitely is gatekeeping, especially since the Universe Beyond cards are likely to draw lots of new and lapsed players back into the game.

In the TWD set, all Walkers were Zombies. So I imagine all hobbits will be kithkin.

Seems like they took the complaints about TWD to heart. New frames will really help to make these cards look visually distinct. Not in FOMO Secret Lairs. The only remaining issue is Legacy legality but, honestly, I do not think WotC cares about Legacy.

I am very excited for the 40k commander decks! I hope we get lots of commanders out of it - Guilliman, Calgar, Dante, Grimnar, Azrael, Halbrecht, Typhus, Kharn, Fabius, Abaddon, Eldrad, Swarm Lord, Ghazghkull, Trazyn... So many good 40k character, and this is not even getting into all the juicy 30k characters!

I love the design of the Masterpiece cards! I love that the Twins are back!

"Witherblooms are goth bio majors. They draw power from the essence of living beings, whether that means enhancing nature or exploiting it. Witherbloom mages are most at home riding zombie crocs, picking herbs for potions, and hanging out in their swamp making grim jokes. Their motto is "Get your hands dirty."

  • posted a message on Maro confirms strixhaven is no Reskin of any version of “magic school” and a bottom up set
    Quote from Flamebuster »
Breath of Fire II featured a "magic school" which allowed you to craft different magics with various elements, and that predated Harry Potter, so Schools of Magic are not exclusive to a particular pop culture phenomenon whether stated or otherwise.

I'm curious to see how this unfolds and the lore/design/world connectivity it has behind it. They say there's no reskin but honestly how can you not do a reskin of a concept that's been done many times before in some form or another?

    'buster

The easy answer to that is to have the students use things other than wands, like staves, swords, rings, etc.
Ah, a video game reference! I also remember a PS2 game called GrimGrimoire that also featured a magic school setting, but the rather than magic houses, students were specialized by magic type (sorcery, glamour, alchemy, etc.)

It is possible to avoid using Harry Potter as a reference if they researched other Magic School stories. But, if the students have to use a magic wand that looks like it is from the Harry Potter movies to cast spells, then the association with Harry Potter is unavoidable.

I also think that Maro is backpedalling. Harry Potter is one of the most popular magic school world stories in the last decade, so how can WotC not use ideas from that world?
