Or to save card slots all 4 on one UBR Amass centered card.
This makes the most sense to me. We have a proliferate legend, so an Amass legend would be expected, and it would make sense for that legend to be an Army creature representing a group of the biggest, baddest Eternals there are: the dead gods.

As for colors, idk. Grixis seems like the best fit.

    Man, I'm getting Brisela vibes.

Land tokens have a similar issues (which also was pointed out by Maro). This is why there are currently no cards that can produce land tokens.
Tokens at least can be made in different shapes and sizes than regular cards, so I would imagine that they're doable.

There are a lot of factors to consider.

Mainly, there is the question of how aggressive and how large the set's threats are. A set with multiple aggressively costed N/4 creatures will want a more aggressively costed -4/-4 removal spell, for example.

Rarity also matters. A higher number of the aformentioned threats at common will encourage the removal to be common as well.

Also depends on the other removal in the set. Red will usually take care of the smaller creatures. I think that in a set with Lightning Strike, for example, will be more comfortable with black removal that gives -4/-4 or -5/-5. Similarly, if there's other black removal already in the set at a certain mana cost, that pushes -N/-N removal away from that spot. For example, you're less likely to see Murder alongside Ob Nixilis's Cruelty, for example.

As for speed, I think it depends on how significant the hasty or flashy threats in the set are. Riot, for example, is the kind of mechanic that would push one toward using more instant-speed removal.

As for my personal preference, I like sets that have more aggressive threats, so I would not want to go above 3 mana for a -4/-4 spell. I would also be partial to instant-speed, but it really depends on the context. I will say that Ob Nixilis's Cruelty is surprisingly efficient. I wouldn't have expected a -5/-5 effect at instant with upside to be only 3 mana and only one black symbol.

I asked Maro about this concept once,. He said R&D had played around with the idea when tackling the issue of too-much-shuffling, and discovered that it wasn't feasible because players would constantly forget to take the 'wished' lands out of their deck after the game, same problem with token lands. Even if hypothetically it saves shuffle time, in practice it caused a lot of headaches.

What I came up with and asked him about- and never got a response- was why they couldn't do 'half-size' token lands, using perforated punchcards on tokens so that you can put two lands on a single card print and then tear them apart and use them as two tokens. That way it would never get shuffled back into a deck. Well I brought that up years ago, and then later we got the perforated cut-outs for amonkhet. Maybe there's a chance?
That occurred to me too. In Bo1, the simple solution is to just use different sleeves for your sideboard so that they stand out. In best of 3, however, there isn't really a clean solution without expecting players to re-sleeve between games.

I do think that token basics of different shapes and sizes could definitely work though.

    Algae Fen
    Land (R)
T, Sacrifice ~: Create a basic colorless Swamp land token. (It has "T: Add B.")
T, Sacrifice ~: Create a basic colorless Forest land token. (It has "T: Add G.")

That does cost some of the versatility that wishlands offer, though.

I like Algae Fen in concept; I think it's a safe idea for a drawbackless fetch simply because there is a drawback; that is, committing sideboard slots to lands. (Then again, it still gets shocklands, so eesh. Maybe it does need a drawback?)

I'm not keen on fetchable utility lands. Yes, even with abilities as narrow as that. I know the better-than-basic rule is occasionally sorta broken, but like the Kamigawa cycle, I think stuff like this should at least be legendary.
I added "etb tapped" to the utility land. I agree that it shouldn't be strictly better than a basic land.

Watching the Mythic Invitational, which is a best-of-one style tournament, I saw a few interesting consequences of the fact that the sideboard can't be used for strategic adjustments between games.

Among the slightly abnormal deckbuilding choices was Mastermind's Acquisition, which a few decks used to basically sideboard midgame, one card at a time. That meant that one could load the side board with any number of situational singles that would normally never see play.

Then, while thinking about something unrelated, I realised that the sideboard can be used much more actively in Bo1 games if there were more wish cards.

    Algae Fen
    Land (R)
    T: Add C.
T, Sacrifice ~: Put a Swamp or Forest card you own from outside the game onto the battlefield.

Already, this design saves a lot of time without needing to shuffle. It also might enable decks to be a bit more aggressive with their deckbuilding, including fewer lands in the main deck. This would play well with the new mulligan rule being tested as well.

I allowed it to tap for colorless so as not to put too much pressure on the player to sacrifice sideboard slots to lands though.

Wish cards have always been a bit far fetched for standard, as post-game sideboarding has always been the more effective way to adapt to your opponent mid match. However, that concern isn't really present in Bo1, which allows the sideboard to be used almost more like an extra deck instead. Even in best-of-three, it at least presents a strategic choice between using your sideboard for consistency at the cost of some answers and maxing it out for adaptability.

Heck, that choice could be made a bit easier by printing lands with basic types that also have effects one would normally keep in the sideboard:

    Sulfuric Swamp
    Land - Swamp (U)
    (T: Add B.)
    ~ enters the battlefield tapped.
B, T: Exile target creature card from a graveyard if it was put there from the battlefield this turn.

Bo1 is already resulting in more flexible design choices in standard (Knight of Autumn, Ravager Wurm, etc.), so I could see it going far enough that the sideboard becomes an integral part of active gameplay. What do you guys think?

I like this mechanic. It came to mind for me as a possible UB evergreen keyword too. I think I would let reach interact with it too, just due to flavor and in order to make reach a bit more relevant.

I might also make it purely offensive to address the chump blocker issue.

Range (Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to this creature by blocking creatures without range or reach.)

The judge issued proxies are referring to the card is only printed as a foil, thus having potential to stick out in decks. The judge can issue you proxies at the start of the event in place of them, but you still have to own and have the copies with you when you play.
Ah. Well that's unfortunate. I hoped they might be talking about the availability issue with BAB promos and similar cards.

So. When can we a expect commander B&R list update? Can't wait to see paradox engine go.
What, nobody plays K-Grip in your group?

On the ban announcement, the interesting thing to me is the other options they mentioned to address "marked cards." Judge-issued proxies seems like a good solution to extremely limited supply that I haven't heard of before. Is that a thing that's already happening?

Another interesting bit about the art, btw, is that Kaya seems to have ditched her Orzhov threads. I wonder if that means she switches sides.

The stained glass version must be the planeswalker masterpieces hidden in the booster boxes. I bet.
Ya know, after staring at the stained glass images for a while, I hope they don't get used for cards of any kind. Honestly, they look pretty terrible when you look at them at card-size. Like badly colored coloring book images.

Unsurprising, since that's highly consistent with how they've handled planeswalkers. There has never been a reprint of a planeswalker in an expansion set. All planeswalker reprints have either occurred in a reprint-heavy booster like Masters and core sets, in a preconstructed deck, or in the form of a promo, such as SDCC or mythic edition.
Not to mention that reprinting existing planeswalker cards in these numbers would probably obliterate both Limited AND Standard. I expect most of these planeswalkers to look really, REALLY bad. Perhaps deceptively so, but unattractive nonetheless.

    Power-wise, I mean.

The stained glass versions of the art looks pretty cool, and I imagine the card versions will look fantastic.

I think it can survive buying a bunch of uncommons. Wink
Truthfully, it's been dying since Planeswalker Decks, alt art foils, SDCC promos, and Mythic Edition boxes. This set is just forcing me to admit defeat.
