Good points, I've removed the fatties. Also I really like your list, I've found myself boarding in Leyline for the majority of my games so moving 3 to the main is a great idea. It's so strong against the current meta and provides literal free game-1 wins occasionally, and we can quite easily cast it if needed. Ratchet Bomb is a great cheap boardwipe I totally forgot about while making the sideboard, can also potentially remove other pesky permanents; slamming 2 of those in. Dreadship Reef is a nice utility land too. Thanks for the feedback.

    Howdy forum,

Just bought into this deck on MTGO, played a few games. The only substitute cards I'm running atm is Duress over Thoughtseize, Echoing Truth over Hurkyl's Recall, and Relic of Progenitus over Grafdigger's Cage but will fix this soon (they're all pretty fitting cards in their own right anyway). Anyway I was wondering; when do we want to board in our fatties (I'm using Dragonlord Dromoka and Grave Titan)? I've noticed people either use proactive fatties or reactive interaction like Path to Exile, Thoughtseize, Disenchant, bounce spells and board wipes, but haven't noticed much of a mix like what I've been trying. This is what I've got for my board so far:

Have you guys had success with the sideboard fatty plan, or is it better for us to stay reactive and combo-focused? Any advice on this list would be great.
PS. Mainboard is completely vanilla if that's relevant; 3 Negation, 3 Spoils, 1 Maniac, 1 Lightning Storm, 4-of for the rest.

Fatal Push hits the top 22 most played creatures in Modern (only missing 9 in the top 50 creatures, two of them are are Golgari Grave-Troll and Street Wraith which usually never enter the field), so I think it definitely deserves at least one of Path to Exile's slots. The maximum power of Push is lower than Path, but if we haven't set up the Arbiter with the Path, I think that would be worse to our gameplan and more likely than missing a target with Push (IE. Push seems it might be more consistently better than Path in this meta, and has a better minimum(?) power, compared to Path). Revolt seems easier to set up than Arbiter + Path.

I'm definitely trying one or two in the main of E&T.

What are some cool tips for someone starting out with this deck?

Learn and practice your Flickerwisp corner plays. That guy can do so many different things and it's easy to forget them, but those plays win games.

Start with a completely stock list, then make adjustments once you've played plenty of games with it. Underestimating the importance of some cards, and how many is needed in the list is a pretty common mistake for new-comers to the deck.

This is with 2 flex slots, and I'll give a small list of possible options below. Also thanks to the addition of Concealed Courtyard our manabase has improved, and there's currently some experimentation going on. I've listed probably 1 basic land too few, so we don't get Path/GQ fetches as often, and we're slightly weaker to Blood Moon, but in all other situations our mana is a little more reliable (which feels like the weakest point of the deck sometimes). Also the 4th Thalia, Displacer, and maybe even the TKS (as I've seen a few lists have been doing) could be treated as flex slots too, but for a beginner I probably wouldn't mess with them for now.

I might've missed some, but I think all these cards are mainboard material for the current meta.

Know there is never THE turn 2 play to make (or turn 3), it's always dependent on the matchup. Turn 2 Thalia, Arbiter or Sculler are each very powerful against particular decks (turn 2 Displacer or Strangler are potential plays too, or even TKS if you got the nut draw). Learn to play flexible and adapt to your opponent, because (subjectively) no deck does this better than ours. So become familiar with the meta.

Yeah I'm not sure about how many Shambling Vents is best. I've been running 2 forever, but there's been numerous matches where I needed one and never drew it (though that happens with my 4 ofs occasionally too, just variance). 3 manlands sounds great and I've been meaning to test it, just not sure if it's too slow.

    Sideboard:
Kambal, Consul of Allocation does seem pretty noice. I've had one in board for the past week but haven't had the opportunity to use it. How's he being for you artfranc007? I'm not particularly sure if he's better than the other hate out there.

Anguished Unmaking I've always had one, it's great having an almost universal answer at instant speed.

Gut Shot I use instead of Darkblast. Great against Infect, but I brought it in for the dreadful (seemingly unbeatable) Elves matchup too. It's great to ambush that Heritage Druid and stop them spewing out their hand on turn 2-3. Not a particularly common deck though, and Darkblast's recursion sounds good.

Dismember and Celestial Purge are great removal spells, I'd suggest at least one of either maybe instead of a Big Game Hunter

Consider Enchantment hate too. Blood Moon is running around everywhere right now, and it does absolutely kill us if we don't have a Vial out (and even if we do it'll likely slow us down considerably). Disenchant and Seal of Cleansing come to mind (we really don't have many good options here, Celestial Purge is good here too which I've got as a 1-of).

Kor Firewalker is a classic against burn and aggro.

Worship is one I've been using just recently instead of a Walker and it's actually won me games against Burn and Elves (I actually got the Firewalker and Worship on board against burn, hard locked him out). An Elspeth or Gideon would probably be better here, but I've been losing against hyper-aggro decks fairly often and just trying new things.

Concealed courtyard is good, but dont you think that then there are too much tapped lands?

I definitely don't think that way. To me, the painless mana is absolutely worth the risk of it entering tapped turn 4 or higher.

We might be firing off a GQ early, Temples let us play our bigger spells turn 3 or 2, and we've got our Vials to maintain tempo. Honestly I haven't had a game yet where I've needed an untapped 4th land and Courtyard ruined my day. I'd suggest making room for at least 3; it's one of our best new tools against aggro and burn decks.

@Stabil0 & x1uo3yd thanks Smile both seem to have their strengths and weakness, but it does seem like Elspeth might be better for the cloggy ground matches, which is exactly what we bring our 4 mana walker in for. Jeez Gideon is expensive though.. just waiting for rotation over here.

@Metal_GuN where's your Concealed Courtyards? That painless untapped duel has won me many games against Aggro/Burn; such a great new card for the deck. I run 3 Couryards and 2 Shrines personally. I'm also pretty sold on 4x Thalias in the 75 (I've ran 4 main since forever) just because she's absolutely essential in many matchups, and will usually be removed asap (can always side her out, and in the matchups where game 1 matters most eg. burn, infect. we gonna need that Thalia, and against burn the redundancy is key). Also most lists that include Walkers will usually only have the one copy in the side, so maybe don't dedicate 2 slots to Elspeth.

Just looking through the past few pages and noticed some people using/recommending Elspeth, Knight-Errant as a potential sideboard card (for the top-deck wars). Any reason people are using her over Gideon, Ally of Zendikar? Just curious because he seems to be a better card overall.

Is Sigarda's Blessing what we've been waiting for to make swords much more viable?

    "W
    Enchantment

You may cast Aura and Equipment spells as though they had flash.

Whenever an Equipment enters the battlefield under your control, you may attach it to target creature you control."

It's obviously screaming for a Puresteel Paladin deck, but can it work here?

personal opinion here. I play U tron, D&T (and have played/play several others) and NOT tokens, but i have played a lot against them.

D&T is consistently solid, you can adapt a little to meta (for example swamp blade splicer with finks, lower curve taking out restoration angel, adding more 1cc removal like dismember, oust, condemn, etc) and IF you can overcome its weakness (need a lot synergy, somewhat like affinity), its a great deck. And i think that the eldrazi add more self contained power in card, so the deck is less dependent on synergy right now.

Mono U tron is also a great deck, the only problem i see is that is an awful deck when meta is too fast (infect, burn, boggles, affinity) and suffer from the same hate that affinity/thopter (mainly stony silence). So, again to me, the only problem with this deck is that you will have a real hard time against fast meta (and while chalice of the void helps, i think is better to play another deck before 4 chalice of the deck main), if you are fine with this, go with it.

Tokens is another great and adaptable meta deck, and really shines in "fairs" metagame, where 1x1, aka jund, is everywhere. you can add more discard againt combo, more removal against permanents, more hate with white (best sideboard in modern). My real concern here is budget wise, you really need B turn 1 because of discard, so marsh flat is somewhat a must. also while dark confidant is not a card i think is really needed here (unlike jund for example), Auriok Champion IS a star and playset of bitterblossom is mandatory.

TLDR summarize, the 3 are great deck to commit, but each have its weakness.
Thanks so much. D&T still sounds great; I love synergy, I love having control over the game while being aggressive, and I love a deck with that kind of modularity you described, as I can continue to tune it to the meta (and while the cheapest variant is currently, apparently, the most viable in this meta, that gives me plenty of room for future upgrades, and I love that too). U Tron seems too susceptible to aggro like you said. Tokens seems too susceptible to non-interactive decks, entirely relying on disruption to get through its usually slow clock (though I guess Jund is the most popular deck right now). The deck might be a bit out of my price range though; Auriok Champion seems vital against aggro, no Marsh Flats means loosing a reliable manabase, and no Bitterblossom. I could probably fit 5-6 of these into the budget, but not a playset of each.

There were 2 last decks I've found, that's Skred Red and Abzan Liege/Wilted Abzan. Was wondering if you had any experience with/against these decks too?

Practically all the money in Skred is in the 3 Blood Moons, and holy crap is it big money. There are a few other cards that are about 5 TIX each (the walkers and other finishers), but I can get the whole list + SB for 140 TIX. This particular list has apparently done really well against most the meta, "Rogue Deck Builder" put results and stuff on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RogueDeckBuilder/ The Mono-Red Control deck seems cool.

Abzan Liege is impossible to build with my budget. 4 of each Noble Hierarch, Voice of Resurgence and Verdant Catacombs makes sure of that. But I did plan a budget list excluding these cards that could perform fairly well (though obviously nothing is close to Voice or Hierarch), and I'd just buy them later down the track. I managed to fit the 1st Hierarch in the list too. The deck's definitely very strong against Jund, the popular one, but I'm feeling like this deck is simply just a meta-choice, and I'm worried it might become a very weak deck (or even completely unviable) if I'm in a meta that avoids the fair play this deck loves.

EDIT: Oh, and I've been following and trying to make my own R/G Land Destruction deck. There was an article by SaffronOlive on MTGGoldfish a while ago on a Goblin Dark-Dwellers + Molten Rain deck, which was in-turn based on an earlier deck that used Blood Moon and Stormbreath Dragon instead. Since then I've seen a few new lists that are trying cool things. It seems like it could be a legit deck.

I think I'm leaning towards D&T the most right now, mainly because it forces the opponent to interact with you, and interactive games are the best (it also seems to be one of the best performing decks in my price range.. so far only at Leagues as far as I can tell on MTGO, but it's a start). I also love the look of Abzan Liege at the moment, and Skred looks interesting.

I've been in your situation too. I'm down to just needing 4 Verdant Catacombs so slowly have made progress.

I'm fairly confident that Avacyn's Pilgrim is the best CHEAP alternative to Noble Hierarch. I basically went looking for one mana dorks, and he's the one I singled out.

The reasoning for him over Llanowar Elves is that they both need green on turn 1, which means you'll have green on turn 2. What do you need on turn 2 more than another green source? White! So turn 1 Pilgrim will let you play a turn 2 Pridemage/Voice.
Yeah that's what I figured too. If the deck needs a t1 G source, then Llanowar Elves is just a poor choice over Avacyn's Pilgrim in a deck so reliant on multiple colour sources. Elves of Deep Shadow pings yourself which sucks, and B is much less likely to be needed on t2 (but there's always fetches for that too). You never realize how amazing Bird and Hierarch are until you look at the other choices.

I think I might be able to squeeze a Hierarch into the budget anyways, which I'll definitely hit turn 1 every game.

For the Verdant Catacombs I went with a Bloodstained Mire, Polluted Delta, Wooded Foothills and a Sunpetal Grove. I've played 97 games so far and I've only had it happen once where I wished I had a Verdant Catacombs.

    23 lands instead of 24.

I think the debate from what I've seen in this thread is 22 vs 23 and 6 dorks vs 7 or 8. 24 lands doesn't come up too much.
Cheers this really helps, I was confused with balancing the numbers. We're an aggro deck, BUT there's seven 4-drops, BUT we run seven dorks.

    Quote from AsrialX »
For Voice of Resurgence you want to go with Qasali Pridemage. If you still have slots available after 4 Pridemage's, then go with Scavenging Ooze.
Sounds good. Maybe I could have some hate-based 2-drops in the board to strengthen this weak spot in games 2 and 3, like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Kor Firewalker. I don't think I could incorporate Leonin Arbiter, that'd mean loosing fetchlands and I'm guessing also access to a consistent t1 G WITH t2 W or B? (to consistently play t1 dork, t2 GB for Abrupt Decay, or ramp into t2 Anafenza, the Foremost without needing a Bird for the B; probably the hardest situations for the deck's manabase considering Razorverge Thicket makes t2 GW much easier, and I don't need BW for anything).

Also how well does Abzan Liege perform against Abzan Company?

in my opinion better play a solid tier 2/3 deck before a budget tier 1. So go with Eldrazi and taxes, i play D&T and is legit deck for a while (when pod was around in fact XD).

the most expensive/important card is vial i think, the rest is pretty cheap.

pd: is funny that the splash black version is more cheap than the just W version XD

Thanks for the reply, and I definitely think you're right. Much better going with a completed tier 2/3 deck. After looking around I also found B/W tokens which can be built in my price range (no Bob or fetches, but there's a full playset of Thoughtseize, Inquisition, Path). So now I'm just deciding between these 2 I guess (Eldrazi Taxes seems more viable, so I might go with that).

On a side note, I saw Mono Blue Tron, which is probably the only blue control deck in my price range (well close to it), so I'll give that a look too.

I've been playing my Kuldotha Whack deck on MTGO in my free time (couldn't count the amount of games and matchups I've gone through), working on tweeking everything. Here's what I'm running:

SSG helps the explosiveness, allowing for more turn 3 kills. Summons is amazing in this archetype, most often being 8 additional swinging power on a 3rd-turn whack, just for R (it's a big gamble to use against blue decks though, if they counter it I'm generally dead). Tried 3 grenades but 4 is definitely the right number to run, WHICH I NEED TO CHANGE (probably remove a Devastating Summons, which might free up a land spot thanks to the SSGs). Loyalist at 3 seems right, specifically for Kuldotha Whack because it's generally more explosive than regular 8 Whack and goes wider, so I don't think he's needed every game and in every matchup... and I also don't run Piledriver. Full 8 of the 0-drop artifacts seems to work best for me, I tried running 7, and even 6, but my luck's just been better with all 8 it seems. The whole Kuldotha package adds so much explosive power that's extremely resilient to one-for-ones, but a lot of hands are susceptible to disruption (often a single card making the entire hand viable) and yea board wipes. But I love the deck, and I haven't finished the sideboard yet. Any suggestions?

Hey guys. I'm looking to build a modern deck and really like the look of this. I'm going to build this on MTGO and can spend 100-140 TIX for the mainboard. I've sorted out a budget list that excludes Noble Hierarch, Verdant Catacombs, and Voice of Resurgence, however I can't find a decent replacement for Voice that comes close to his value, and with that much power and synergy with the whole deck. Replaced him with 3 Fleecemane Lion as I think it might be the only 2-drop that fits the role of... somewhat efficient beater (admittedly I was specifically looking for a G/W creature, maybe I should try a better single-coloured creature and sacrifice that little synergy with Liege?), and 1 extra Qasali Pridemage. I know Hierarch is more than just a dork and exalted is very powerful, but I've had to replace her with... just a dork unfortunately (Avacyn's Pilgrim and/or Llanowar Elves).

With 1 free slot for something, another dork or piece of removal I guess (I'd hate to have 4 boring dorks, but if it's necessary)

I feel like I'd be losing far too much power if both the Hierarch and Voice were dropped... Would a budget list without these key cards even be viable at like a FNM level, maybe a little higher?

I was thinking of building Bogles, picking up the Paths and majority of the manabase for a Wilted Rhino deck along the way (dropping Horizon Canopy in Bogles as that'll be about in my TIX range) and completing the deck over time.

EDIT: Sorry but am I in the right section? Should I take this to another subforum?
