If you're just looking for a list of sets, dates, and expansion symbols, Wikipedia has a good page:

For the Legend rule, is Balthor the Stout, (creature - dwarf legend) affected by the legend rule? or is only Tivadar of Thorn (legendary creature - human lord) the creature that is affected by the legend rule?

Actually, if you look at the errata for Balthor the Stout, it says "Legendary Creature - Dwarf."

Back when Kamigawa came out and they changed the Legend rule, they got rid of the creature type Legend and errata'd all Legends to have the supertype Legendary.

The Legend Rule affects both of them.

If someone could explain what happens here perhaps with a reference to the part of the comp rules that explains it that would be really helpful. This particular mate is always doing stuff like this (like I sacrifice my Mogg Fanatic he says "No I Shock it you can't deal any damage", etc...)

Sounds like your buddy has a tenuous grasp on some pretty basic rules of the game. The section of the Comprehensive rules you want to point him to is 408. Timing of Spells and Abilities. It's a big section, so I won't post it here.

Basically, if you have priority (which you have to have if you're playing spells and abilities), then your opponent can't play anything until you pass priority (usually because you want the top object on the stack to resolve). He can't Shock your Mogg Fanatic to make it not deal damage if you've already played the ability.

It could be more like a stylzied sunrise/sunburst than a fire. Morningtide and all.

    Though it is pretty fire-ey.

I don't think it's very likely that Planeswalkers will act as additional players, that would end up being very clunky, and the ability to take two turns is buh-roken.

I think they'll end up being a "replacement" player, which I mentioned in one of the other threads:

    Quote from "Blargg" »
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but what if the mechanic of Planeswalker is that, instead of adding a new player to your side, the Planeswalker takes your place?

For instance, you pay to put the Planeswalker into play by the mana cost and X amount of life. The Planeswalker takes your place. and starts with the X life. There it stays, like a Mindslaver'd player, until it is removed from play, or the Planeswalker zone, or whatever.

Planeswalkers are attacked and targetted as though they were the player. Their permanents are your permanents, their library is your library, etc...

In the end, I think it solves all the problems with treating Planeswalkers as players. The flavor is that you basically ask the Planeswalker for assistance for a short time. You can keep it to only one Planeswalker per side, and by having to "transfer" life points, it can keep you from throwing Planeswalkers up as continuous meat shields.

But, hey, at least we know for sure that Planeswalkers are in.

    I just earned 5 bucks!

I know someone mentioned this earlier in the thread, but there's another reason why Kicker isn't the best way to represent this mechanic without having cards with seriously differing templating:

    Wrath Elemental 1WW
    Creature - Elemental
When ~this~ is put into a graveyard from play, destroy all creatures. They can't be regenerated.
    Evoke: 2WW
    2/2

How would you represent that with kicker, without having all the Evoke cards having different templates?

How does the replacement effect from Fortune Thief work if Fortune Thief dies at the same time you would receive damage that would reduce you to less than 1?

i.e. If you blocked for some reason with Fortune Thief, and another unblocked attacker would reduce you to less than 1. The damage would all resolve as one event, so does the replacement effect still apply?

    Quote from Top Deck
if an opponent casts chalice of the void for 1, can i spellsnare it since they spent 2 mana on it?

I assume you mean that 1 was chosen for X. The answer is yes, because of this rule:

203.3b When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with an {X} in its mana cost, X is treated as 0 while the object is not on the stack, and X is treated as the number chosen for it while the object is on the stack.

When it's on the stack, each X is worth 1, and it's converted mana cost is 2, and Spell Snare can counter it.

Step 1: Throw them in a giant box in the closet, only to open when it's time to throw more commons in it.

Step 2: Buy a new box. Repeat.

Please try and stay more on-topic. This post does nothing to further the discussion proposed in the original post of how to get the most money out of cards. There is a difference between trying to be humorous and just cluttering up a thread with off-topic comments.

  • posted a message on sleeves under sleeves?
The only reason I can think of using a second sleeve would be to face the opening on the inner sleeve towards the bottom of the first sleeve, so the card is completely covered on all sides.

I don't know about you guys, but I know the tops of my cards can still get worn with sleeves on them. I imagine this might be a way to stop that if you're exceptionally paranoid.

  • posted a message on Tribal Cards
I don't really see what Tribal is accomplishing for any of these cards. It just seems like it could be used for tutoring or Coat of Arms(sans creature restrictions)-like effects, but does it really have anything else?

When you take into account all of the eratta to cards that designate creature types to specify that they only work with creatures, it seems like all the tricky things that Tribal could pull off have been nullified already.

Is there something I'm just not seeing that makes Tribal a type worth a lot of attention, considering what we know about it?

I think he means that the first expert expansion legal after the Extended rotation is Mirrodin. The mtg.com website states Invasion-Onslaught blocks and 7th edition will rotate out after "Rock," leaving Eighth for another several years.

i personaly dont like it when people use alot of proxies. once on campuse i played against someone who made a deck of proxies useing index cards he bought at the bookstore, and it was a deck filled with the power nine. it was just sad.lol

That's right! Those impudent kids who don't have a couple grand to drop on the P9 don't deserve to play should be ashamed! I'd rather beat someone with my wallet than with any amount of skill.

In fact, whenever I play someone on MWS and they drop a card in the Power 9, I immediately stop the game and refuse to continue until they can send a scan of their cardboard, in addition to a notarized certificate of authenticity, two forms of government ID, and their blood type.

Seriously, though. Magic cards are just cardboard representations of a rules concept. What do you care if he proxies his cards in a casual setting?

If paying for powered cards is the only thing that makes the game worthwhile for you, you might as well save your time and just take out your wallets and have a slapping contest with them.

    Pretty much the same thing.

I thought Maro said that the whole "assemble" and "contraption" thing was so absurd that we shouldn't really anticipate any real development in the future?
