The End of an Era
  • posted a message on Old joke ideas, New official cards
Heya! I'm making this post to talk about curious (and plausible) influences to actual cards, made by "acorn" cards made by third parties. The places i looked at is the site The Magic Librarities.

A nice touch seen in the Librarities are cards, real or virtual, not found in other places like Scryfall, beings originals made by magazines, or specific tokens for a sole card effect. Sadly, barelly, if any, are made in such old way. An example of influence is the mechanic of "random", used on the MicroPose Computer Game and the japanese Sega Dreamcast game, now usedon Magic Arena and Alchemy. Fun, but can only work properly on virtual platform. Other, not really unexpected, is the magazine The Duelist Fantasy Cards, with give some "extra unglued" cards, called Extra Pulled, which follows the un-set logic (or lack) (its seems to be also the source of the legendary Throat Wolf and the Firstest Strike).

But the cream is the InQuest, with loads of random themes (serious and jokes), mechanics and even actual MTG artists as guests. First, the idea of the color Purple since 1997; Then, what is a normal process to most franchises, to use another franchise but in MTG format, with Conan the Barbarian and Tarzan, and eventually the official Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings; IQ's System Shock comes with a "Command Zone" card with the type Quest, to fulfil a Task and get your Reward; IQ's Altered States is what some cards would look if they where other colors and effects, like a precessor for the MTG's Planar Chaos; IQ's space adventure, M:TG 3K, also comes with new names for types, like technology for artifact, and starship for a proto-vehicle with the Crew mechanic, but no explanation what should it be or the other mechanic, "Manpower".

To almost finish, there is a french group fan card maker, who made a set themselves, "Unofficial Cards", and two ideas shows quite a similar concept to the official MTG, latter on: a cycle of Eater (Dévoreur) type creature, being base for the Odyssey's Lhurgoyfs; and the Keeper of the Seven Circles, black legendary beings (seven hells?) who will look what could be the MTG's Seven Steel Thanes, also black legendaries.

An extra: a nice cycle to finish is the MMMM-cost sorceries about the life and family of Richard Garfield Jr. (Ph.D.): the white Proposal (unknown art), blue Fraternal Exaltation, red Phoenix Heart, and green Splendid Genesis (hope the black is not his funeral...).

Yeah, it was from Scryfall that i found out about the Face the Hydra, then saw what was about in the MtG Fandom wiki.

Are you looking to just find the art or are you planning to buy the artwork?

At the moment just to see it at whole, with all the heads (including those unseen in cards) and the body, as i'm not sure its going to be on sale or anything.

Hello all. I'm openning this thread with just a simple quest: Where can we (i) find somes artworks of older cards? One thing i simple found out, is that exist an extension of the Theros block names Hero's Path. Seems silly to not know about for so long, but i liked this parallel type of game. Remember me of Planechase and Archenemy (which i think could have more of those, but don't look like sold that well, so we will not have anymore).

Well, the problem that start this all: The Face the Hydra mini-game. Each Head, as one can see, is part of a whole. But even searching for hours eacn day for 3 days, looking after the artist (Richard Wright), looking at various forums, sites, using different searching browser, i could not find the full image of this damned Hydra, with all its heads and such. Of course, other arts is hard to find as well, but mostly, what i wanted is just ask where to find those fullarts.

Indeed, its ludicrous. The only idea of those above, is like what rowanalpha said: Increasing effect by the number of mulligans done. As well as "only one free" at the beginning, but its not really much Mulligan Matter, but "Game Matter", so the growing effect, i concur, is the best.

So, a least about balancing "Jackpot", one per game can be the correct choice. Together, only one free, it only becomes relevant if you accept the risk of beginning with a smaller hand, betting that you will find this Jackpot at a reasonable point, or you will have a small and possible not much good hand.

With this newbie idea, putting some effort (if i ever do, after all, anyone who likes it, be my guest to have it and polish it at your discretion) might not be so much unplayable... but still, looks more like a "Test Card" mechanic, not much fun to be a Un-type. Smile

I didn't found Serum Powder, maybe cuz i did wake midnight just for this half-baked idea, hahaha.

About what FetalTadpole says, indeed, reading awake now, those are bad balanced. But i think the blue case, won't make me draw 2 each, as they would be cast together, making my actual hand 5 in size (7-5=2, in case of no mulligan)? Dunno, i created to counter the "problem" of smaller hands.

But as user_938036 says, its a better way about limiting the free ones, and not the copies themselves, and rowanalpha make a mulligan counting kind, which maybe i thought was a bad idea for being less flavorful (Not that Jackpot will have any use outside the beginning...).

I think, then, a Mulligan Matter indeed should be about its own counting. Yelp, never made a mechanic before, so at least is not a total failure :p

    Hello peoples.
I don't have any practice with card creation or mechanics or proper balance, so if someone can help, or if want to improve and use this idea, be my guest.
I was half-sleeping and thought that i never seen any mechanic or ability that cares about mulligan itself to operate. But because may be too much restricting, i loosened a bit, and make a "synergetic" keyword (Leyline mechanic) + non-keyword (Hellbent-esque) so you guys n gals have this:

    Proof of Faith 3WW
    Instant
Jackpot (If ~ is in your opening hand, you may cast it without paying its mana cost.)
You gain X life, where X is 10 minus the number of cards in your hand.

    Mind Bogging 3UU
    Instant
Jackpot (If ~ is in your opening hand, you may cast it without paying its mana cost.)
Draw X cards, where X is 7 minus the number of cards in your hand.

    Unlimited Power 3BB
    Instant
Jackpot (If ~ is in your opening hand, you may cast it without paying its mana cost.)
Deals X damage to target player, where X is 10 minus the number of cards in your hand.

    Hungry Frenzy 3RR
    Instant
Jackpot (If ~ is in your opening hand, you may cast it without paying its mana cost.)
Create X 1/1 red Goblin creature tokens, where X is 8 minus the number of cards in your hand.

    Fatty Pants 3GG
    Instant
Jackpot (If ~ is in your opening hand, you may cast it without paying its mana cost.)
Create a X/X green beast creature token, where X is 8 minus the number of cards in your hand.

If is weak, just pumps the X, if broken, might put something like a pre-static (un-Relentless Rats) and/or post-conditional:
Jackpot (A deck can have only one card named ~. If ~ is in your opening hand, you may cast it without paying its mana cost. If you do, exile it.)

    So the idea is:
1 - You get something if in your opening hand even if with the full 7 (6 after casting it: 3 life, draw 1, deal 3, 2 1/1, 1 2/2).
2 - Instant speed to respond to an opponent action.
3 - Better effect the smaller your hand.
1 + 3 is what simulates the "game-changer" when does mulligan quite a number, and start the game strong (sorry the roundabout i'm sleepy).

I've been thinking about it too. Like, as I can see, using the classic color square, we have:
Red-Yellow("Gold")-Green-Blue and White-Grey-Black as "light, dark and between".

If I mix que color square, we have Orange(R+Y), Lime(Y+G), Cyan(G+B) and Purple(B+R), missing now 1 to have all the 5. Maybe Dark Grey?

To me, this new colors reflect, maybe, more our real world. I know it's creativity license, but to me, MTG is already well-done. Some say the Eldrazi represent the Purple, as a non-existence mana, or some Lovecraft-thing type (Elder Gods = Eldrazi, corrupt the world in their image, etc ..). I like this idea, saying Purple is Void, placed as the center of the color wheel/pie. So the mythical sixth can be "outer world", where (as used in InQuest magazines) can have "purple monsters" as devoid, card frame be purplish to them, and have strange and new mechanics, and "ultra high-tech" artifacts made by the older gods or lost planeswalkers... i don't know, Magic is majority classic legends ans fables. Who knows, one day, the future comes? They did almost steampunk, so why not?

Hello hello people from the past! (And sorry my broken english)

I know this post is old, and maybe few will see this, if any, but i want to share what i'm thinking to this new and awesome idea Smile
I read everything here and the post before this (original, maybe?). And i thought this: "What if i use the real world to explain the colors?".

This is my thing: Instead of the old "pentagon becoming hexagon with Purple", i think that PLOEK is a parallel universe of WUBRG, and each of the new color is between two of an old allied pair, using the classic Blue-Purple-Black from Planar Chaos. So it can be seen like "W-k-U-p-B-l-R-e-G-o-W" cycle.

Pink: Cozy home. Full fridge. Baked cake. Unconditional love. To protect the loved ones, that is all the life, you can't just be aggressive, so it needs other means. But what is love? Passion? Care? Feelings? Why not turn creatures impassioned to you using succubi and sirens? And taking care or big beast with (lol) snacks? Or even stop enemies with... cuddles? "Social Assistance" is to make everybody happy, of course, under YOUR care.

Purple: It can be "Unstable Mind" style (Black/Blue), where nightmarish beings born from fear and insanity (fatty horrors with low power and toughness, but great abilities), or can be wonderful dreams, furry and friendly beasts (few-to-none ability and big power/small tough or vice-versa, because they are unstable, opposing natural life of G), cartoonish animals and (as neutral with artifacts) living objects that interact by itself.

Yellow: All about games, gratuitous fun and "Money Power" (Red/Black), where uses some kind of currency (here can be tokens, made by special artifacts), which buys (cheap) spells, artifacts and even creatures from opponents or from the "bank" (judge? lol), or sell all with interests. The idea is using alternative costs, like coin flip and throwing dies (as gambling like so much) and mini-games? (Un-set hahaha). Fun, fun, fun. Win all or lose all.

Brown: With the idea of industrialism, i think its better to be between Yellow (both like artifacts) and Orange (nature give resources), because it will be "Mechanic Horse" (Red/Green), creating buffed and complex machinery (artifact beasts) to great works, and using swarms of little workers to operate and create all things (gnomes and goblins, lol). It can use the concept of "-tron" thing (Urzatron and the chimera cycle of Visions set).

Orange: This switch with Brown. Its dislike of Purple remains, but being so close to the nature (and your natural course of self-renovation killing many, birthing many), to me this like wild beings as Pink love all (organic) life. Connected with the past forces of the world, slow and catastrophic power of earth and fast and furious rage of sky (and the land being Dune), i see desolation and vitality, deserts and forests, a "Fair World" (White/Green).

And to close (hallelujah): To me, Yellow combine with "City" land, because is a place, and the thunder symbol seems to electricity (to my Las Vegas mechanic >.>). And "Cave" to the Purple? Maybe the Rift is inside :p .Welp, that is.
