I'm not terribly pissed it was Tamiyo, I just hope they don't resolve it in a boring way.
AKA: OH Gideon comes back for 5 minutes to save her! Praise Jesus!
Or: Turns out Lilliana's powers now work on phyrexians! For reasons!
Or: And then Kaya offed her offscreen because we had no idea where our writing was going!

I'm mostly irritated by the Compleation mechanic not applying to all of her colored mana costs. Yes, it would potentially put her at -1 loyalty. I'm sure there's some shenanigans in game already to handle that. Paying 2 life for 2 less counters and her being 1 mana cheaper really isn't much of a discount.

I do agree there would have been better characters to do this to though, or at least a little build up with a "Previously Unknown Walker" who is compleated.

The only problem with your suggestion of a previously unknown waller being Compleated would be that noone would care beyond the "oh, that happened." The fact that it's happening to a character that we've had around, that has helped the Gatewatch with Plane-shattering problems now succumb to one of the most ancient evils the Blind Eternities has had matters more. And if you take their current cast of Walkers on Kamigawa, Tamiyo is the one that makes the most sense.

The Wanderer was a huge enigma until we found out that she's the missing Emperor. But we still don't know much about her. To Compleat her wouldn't have had much of an impact.

Kaito is a "new" planeswalker, new to us at least, and as such he doesn't have the rapport with the players so that we would care if he got Compleated.

Tezzeret... well, not even sure about Tezzeret at this point. He largely appears to be his own person but closely tied with the Phyrexians but only for his own gains. To Compleat him would be irrelevant because we already see him as a big bad. On his own versus Jace, as Bolas's Minion through the events of War of the Spark and now as a Phyrexian co-conspirator. It wouldn't make sense to Compleat him.

So that kinda leaves Tamiyo as the only choice here. I mean, yeah they could've had a random walker just planeswalk in just in time to be captured by Tezzeret but that's lazy storytelling and would be even more, how did everyone call it,"done for shock value"?

Anyways, that's my two cents. This definitely makes me curious to see where this story arc is going. We've seen 2 out of the 5 praetors so far, other than the possibility of one in New Capenna or Dominaria, which I don't see happening, we will probably have to wait a bit before seeing the next one. Which makes me feel better than back to back to back to back stories about the same characters (Battle for Zendikar, Shadows Over Innistrad, Kaladesh, Ixalan, Dominaria, oops War of the Spark.) Kinda seemed like it happened altogether too quickly to me. Even though it's about 3 years worth of Story arc.

There usually a few cards I like in in-sets but overall not my focus. However, the lands in this set look phenomenal. The buy-a-box promos, WOW

I'm a little sad that they've chosen to go the black-border Acorn stamp direction either these cards, as I've always enjoyed the silver-border touch that made these cards unique but I am definitely looking forward to this set as I love all things UN. I also decided this past year to pull the trigger on an EDH deck celebrating one of my favorite video games and got themed custom Dragon Shields and a custom art Captain Sisay as Commander Shepard so seeing these lands, they are now a MUST HAVE for that deck. I'm glad they are a buy a box promo AND in Collectors Packs which means that they should be widely available for me to get my hands on.

Great news, now they can delay this trash indefinitely and print a real set. Seriously, paying money for cards that aren't legal is pure madness.

But some of them are legal this time, so that argument falls more flat than usual, and clearly people like it or they wouldn't be printing it. I'd rather have this than 100 more Secret Lairs or the next $15/pack limited set, or Double Feature.
they made some of the cards legal exactly because people were losing interest in unsets. this increases perceived value of set as people could sell cards potentially valuable for other formats. it's artificial increase of product value and it's a bad sign that they did this. i enjoyed ocasional unset draft but my lgss never sold even remotely close amount of unset product compared to normal sets.

Strange, from what I remember Unglued sold moderately well, Unhinged was a sale disaster because of overprinting as well as some bad designs and Unstable had to be reprinted multiple times because of the high demand. Were do you get 'people start to lose interest in unsets' out of that?
I've had multiple occasions of people tearing up silver-border cards in the middle of other people's games because they're "not real Magic." The general Magic community respect actual hornets more than silver border cards. Unstable sound extremely well on its Limited environment and full-art basics, but that wasn't enough for most people.

Oh, I DARE someone to try and rip up my silver border cards. That's a declaration of war and I don't think there would be anything left of the person that had the testicular fortitude to do such a thing. My property is my property, you can dislike Silver Bordered cards but you keep your disgusting hands off my expensive merchandise.

Impossible to say how good this is without the power and toughness, but we can put divinity counters next to bushido on the list of mechanics that are not returning.

*snaps finger and points at you*

good point divinity counters are probably dead now thanks to indestructible counters

so now I’m wondering if it’s a spirit or samurai card because this is probably the new role for divinity counter

What the heck is an Asari? I'm betting this card isn't even from a Kamigawa set.

The asari, native to the planet Thessia, are often considered the most influential and respected sentient species in the galaxy, and are known for their elegance, diplomacy, and biotic aptitude. This is partly due to the fact that the asari were among the earliest races to achieve interstellar flight after the Protheans, and the first to discover and settle the Citadel.

A mono-gender race, the asari are distinctly feminine in appearance and possess maternal instincts. Their unique physiology, expressed in a millennium-long lifespan and the ability to reproduce with a partner of any gender or species, gives them a conservative yet convivial attitude toward other races. Favoring compromise and cooperation over conflict, the asari were instrumental in proposing and founding the Citadel Council and have been at the heart of galactic society ever since.

Yeah, "Not every Magic product is for every player" should be a mantra repeated every day, everywhere in the MtG community. Who think otherwise it's a compulsive collector, and the problem in that case it's not of WotC but exclusively of their own.

I remember back when every set/product was for every player and not pushed basic lands for $100+.

I remember last year when I spent almost $400 on a set of basic lands. They did and still do bring a smile to my face when I play them at prereleases as part of the "Limited set" I bring. Still amuses me to no end to have a full set of foil full text basics. And I'm sure when I come across that one individual that also shares my enthusiasm over expensive collectible cardboard rectangles, I will enjoy them that much more for having that shared experience.

I'm liking the idea here. Am I going to buy all of them? No. But I'm looking forward to Gemini and feel like based off of their "nature" Gemini will be Mountains since they're carefree and capricious. Those I might get.

I still feel alot of the people that are naysayers of these products really emphasize what Maro says that every Magic product is not for every player. You don't like it? Fine. Is it ruining your game to let someone play their Capricorn swamps? Not really. Especially considering how many people before secret lair could get custom near-NSFW anime artwork on a basic land so what's the difference? At least these aren't Agehao Princess Peach or insert other anime character here, but something that people can be happy about because it enhances their expression in the game.

It is sad that they create a digital toolbox and then use that to create cards that could have been done in a paper-friendly way. The recent flood of dfc has already made me unhappy enough - literally the only workaround I have for playing these cards in physical magic is to have a second copy of each flip card so I am not constantly fumbling with pulling the cards out of sleeves to flip them.

At the current trajectory of abandoning physical magic for digital - they will eventually run into the situation where the illusion of digital magic is just to play the game when physical isn't available will end. When magic exists as a digital game - they will lose the enfranchisement of the players. When that happens - the everquest/wow myspace/facebook switch will happen. A better game will have the window to succeed and draw the critical number of players from magic.

You do know that there are Checklist/Proxy cards in almost every pack in a set with DFC right? There are also clear sleeves in most brands and penny sleeves if you are desperate. It's honestly how *I* choose to play my DFC. It's much easier, less wear and tear on the card, less wear and tear on my fingers (hate getting that little "chip" in my skin that's annoying/painful from sleeving and desleeving) and honestly so much more satisfying to flip the card over than to pull a card out and reverse it. It even works in your favor because you don't have to remember to flip cards back each game, don't run into an issue of "Oh crap. I forgot to flip this around. How do I flip it back without giving my opponent information because I forgot what the front side says" and if you accidentally shuffle a clear-backed sleeve into your deck it kinda stands out so easier to correct that issue as well. But yeah, that's my two cents.

I feel like everyone that is talking about certain cards in Silver Border becoming "Eternal Legal" and even the cards releasing in this set, are mistaken. They've already said that the Water Gun Balloon Game preview image was incorrect as it was meant to have an Acorn stamp which is their new way of printing "Silver-border" cards. Just because they have black borders does NOT make them Legacy legal. And they will NEVER reprint any card that has shown up in a Silver-border as a black-bordered Legacy-legal version EVEN IF it would make sense in regular Magic (the entire common multiple-variation set, sans lands) because of the confusion in legality of such cards.

But yeah, indubitably I'm bound to see more discussion of "Oh well you could make an argument for [previous printed Silver-bordered card] and it would be okayish in Legacy." even if it doesn't make a shred of sense.

    Killer Cosplay

Is that a Grizzly Bear dressed as a Tarmogoyf?

The article states that it is a Lhurgoyf but I think I like your thought process as I recently opened a Bear Cub in one of my Set Booster boxes and that has a mana value of 1G the same as Tarmogoyf. Lol

those lands alone will sell this product like crazy. the rest will most likely be trash that 99% of the people wont want

It's honestly surprising they took this long to make the change. Un-sets, while cool, sell pretty poorly since most people don't really do anything with the cards in a meaningful way after doing the event or whatever. Personally, I've never bought a single pack from an Un-set, probably the only MtG product I can say that about. Depending on previews, this might change the game for me.

I don't think they can go back and errata the old silver-bordered cards to be legal now due to confusion, but we'll see. I'm definitely into the lands for sure, but not exceedingly so. My stupid land goal now is to get enough of the pixel SL lands to fully pixelate at least one or two of my EDH decks. Those lands hit me in the nostalgia too hard.

Well, for basically any booster thats true as well.

You play "maybe" the rare of a booster and the rest is just jank to throw away.

Making the cards black border does the same, its still 99.9% crap nobody cares about, and the "reprints" are lands, so the entire value is in the lands anyway, which was always the case for the Un-Sets, at least when the lands where special, which they are not anymore at this point.

    ----

As we have "borderless" cards now, all of the cards could just be that, borderless, no black or silver needed.
But that cuts in their business of Collector packs.
Making the "holo-stamp" relevant to identify if a card is legal or not will be awful enough.

For EDH/Commander theres basically no reason to not allow silver-border cards anyway, its just the rule they fly with, and in casual you can do whatever you want anyway, bound to no rules.

Introducing dice rolls to black-border land predictable resulted in these changes to force more Un-Mechanics into the regular game (and its absolutely awful to play competitive with these random mechanics on top of all the randomness the game already brings to the table).

If everyone is on board to have fun with Silver-Border cards it can be enjoyable.
If people dont feel the need to ask their playgroup in the first place, that opens the door wide to disappointment and trouble in paradise.

TL;DR Rule Zero is a thing.

Dominaria is a nexus between a large number of planes. That's why older planeswalkers came through there often, it's one reason why the Phyrexians invaded the plane, and why the first stories where centered there. But the single origin it is not. It may not even be the oldest plane, if that concept even makes sense.

I believe in the novel Planeswalker (set shortly after the events of The Brother's War which took place on Dominaria) Urza manages to travel to the plane of Equilor, a plane that had lost most of its vestiges of mana due to the long age of the plane resulting in Urza and Xantcha being trapped there for many years while Urza figured out how to Planeswalk away. So just some food for thought on that subject.

yea if only they had years of experience in game design and people to pump out products every 2 months... i guess we could have solved this. but u r probably right, i expected to much.
i mean we all know wizards is paying so much attention to balancing cards, so we got no bans at all. even when it is just in a product that is just for a small range of formats where it can be played.

Hey, remember that time that Wizards of the Coast created that one Secret Lair, you know, for that one super popular Zombie Apocalypse show that contained only mechanically unique cards and the internet broke? Weird how they didn't want to rush right in and do that again. Especially on such short notice.

And before some of you start in on me citing Secret Lair: STRANGER THINGS, they've have years and 3 seasons to pull ideas for, I'd wager someone had the mockups just sitting in a fan file on their desktop waiting for an announcement looking for submission ideas internally and then of course R&D did their magic and made the cards we see in the drop. Arcane was literally being released as they made the Secret Lair. As ilovesaprolings said, I'm all for new content but I'm also for not repeating the mistakes of the past and rushing out something just for the sake of having something out there that ends up being banned for being too broken or nerfed into unplayability.

But that's just my opinion. No need to go spreading it around.
