A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era
  • posted a message on Rhys story?
You're right. The Wiki on him hasn't been updated in a long time. The short version of the rest of Rhys' tale is:
After the Aurora, he was restored physically and was once again with his kind. We first see him in the Eventide book (was completely absent from the Shadowmoor book if I recall correctly) with a group of elves defending a Kithkin village from The Destroyer. It doesn't go well and he meets up with Brigid and Maralen again (who wasn't changed by the Aurora thanks to Sygg's amulet). They set off together and help Maralen capture the power of the Destroyer from Ashling (restoring her and making her the only flamekin left on the plane). Rhys, Maralen and their band work together to fight Oona. The fight is won, Oona is dead thanks to Moonglove that Maralen had saved from Lorwyn and they all agree to work together to help balance the plane now that day and night cycles have been restored.

Thats about all I can recall (been years since I read the books). I'm sure someone can add more or correct me on some things. Hope it helped though.

Huh. Does anybody notice Siege-Gang Commander and several Blind Phantasms in the storage scene? Smile

Good catch! Werewolf on the left and a large generic demon in the back too.

    From the Comprehensive Rules:
    • 702.22. Cumulative Upkeep
      • 702.22a Cumulative upkeep is a triggered ability that imposes an increasing cost on a permanent. “Cumulative upkeep [cost]” means “At the beginning of your upkeep, if this permanent is on the battlefield, put an age counter on this permanent. Then you may pay [cost] for each age counter on it. If you don’t, sacrifice it.” If [cost] has choices associated with it, each choice is made separately for each age counter, then either the entire set of costs is paid, or none of them is paid. Partial payments aren’t allowed.
        • Example
        • A creature has “Cumulative upkeep or ” and two age counters on it. When its ability next triggers and resolves, the creature’s controller puts an age counter on it and then may pay , , , or to keep the creature on the battlefield.
        • Example
        • A creature has “Cumulative upkeep—Sacrifice a creature” and one age counter on it. When its ability next triggers and resolves, its controller can’t choose the same creature to sacrifice twice. Either two different creatures must be sacrificed, or the creature with cumulative upkeep must be sacrificed.
      • 702.22b If a permanent has multiple instances of cumulative upkeep, each triggers separately. However, the age counters are not linked to any particular ability; each cumulative upkeep ability will count the total number of age counters on the permanent at the time that ability resolves.
        • Example
        • A creature has two instances of “Cumulative upkeep—Pay 1 life.” The creature currently has no counters but both cumulative upkeep abilities trigger. When the first ability resolves, the controller adds a counter and then chooses to pay 1 life. When the second ability resolves, the controller adds another counter and then chooses to pay an additional 2 life.

I believe that the Elf is Ravnican, specifically from Selesnya.

Elf looks a little too blue for me. Simic maybe? Sub-elf is casting something blue.

Soooo...any info on what happened in the comic?

We don't have MTG comics in my country so...any info about the story would be most appreaciated.

Dack and Sifa face off. Sifa escapes when the townfolk rise up. She Planeswalks to another plane (Looked like Arabian Nights-style buildings) and Dack says "S#&t" at the very end. To be continued in The Spell Thief.

  • posted a message on No more Gateway Promos
I wrote to Bill Stark after reading the article asking if Wizards was in fact slowly discontinuing free promos, or if something was going to replace Gateway promos. By my count we've gone in 3 years from 49 different promos annually to 35.

Here is a surprisingly prompt reply from Bill:
Thanks for taking the time to write. Like you, I’m also a long-time Magic player (Fallen Empires was my first expansion, sometime back around 1995). I’m going to respond to your email, but I have to be up front with you: I can’t comment on Wizards business strategies, which are some of the things you asked about. However, I can say this: Magic and Organized Play programs are created by people who are passionate about Magic. We’re Magic players, people who have been to, run, judged, and organized events for years. The success of the game drives each move we make, and that’s why we decided it was time to introduce the Trade Marketing Kit. After analyzing the Gateway Kit we realized it wasn’t living up to its intended purpose. We truly believe the Trade Marketing Kit will shore up some of its weaknesses, and will provide tools retailers can use to better succeed with their businesses. Their success is very important to us; when retailers succeed, Wizards succeeds because they are our partners in the gaming world. And when we succeed together, we better serve your needs as a player.

I can’t speak to some of the specifics you asked about in your email, but I can assure you this: we created the Trade Marketing Kit to better serve retailers and players, and we truly believe it will.

Thanks for taking the time to write, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

    Regards,
    Bill

I'm not surprised he can't divulge WotC's business plans, but I am a little irked that the end of the reply was 8 sentences sentences of marketing fluff. Any he never even used the word "promo" once either.

So, take it for what you will.

I hope this silences the fanboys who've been shouting for 7 years "Niv-Mizzet is a plneswalker!! He 'walked away from Ravnica!!!!" You know, because it would be completely impossible for the best blue mage on the plane to teleport and be undetectable.....

What I don't get is why Evolving Wilds even existed in the first place. What was go wrong with just keeping our common land searcher as Terramorphic the whole time through, and functionally, why would we ever need 8?

Possibility 1) Have 2 functional copies of the same card to please EHD players.
Possibility 2) The wanted to simplify/dumb-down the name for some reason.
