Hmm. She is a very situational card.
    • You have to have top deck manipulation to get any benefit from the [+1]. Randomly guessing cards is pretty bad in reality.
    • Returning a card from graveyard is pretty fine, but assumes a spell already cast that you'd want.
    • Static ability is very meta dependent.
At the end of the day, these new walkers don't have ultimates, so they don't give you end games to plan for.
She can either be very good, or very bad, depending on your setup or your opponents.

My guess is that she is going to be a bit overrated at first, and then people will settle in to the fact that she is a Regrowth for 2UG most games.

I see her more as "fill your yard (with a chance for card advantage) and get what you need later". No need to cast stuff, just mill it, let it sit and fish it out when needed. Assuming she stays around for more than one turn, of course.

Folks, when the new Green and Blue gods come out, with their new tuck 3-cards-down abilities, her +1 will appear to be more useful. She might end up being tech in 60-card decks themed around the Green/Blue gods yet to be spoiled. Consider this with the Spark Double and you suddenly have a lot of redundancy built into the deck that can get out of hand very quick. She is a good card in the correct situation.

    Well folks,

    what did I say?

    God-Eternal Rhonas

Tamiyo, Collector of Tales is looking juuuuust fine.

I like the approach of taking what would have been a $20-$30 mythic the moment of it's announcement - and making it a common instead.

Lowering the rarity of such power makes the game more affordable, in regards to $.

Nice moves that WoTC is making.

This may also be a byproduct of the existence of Modern Horizons in a way that we don't yet recognize at face value.

Standard can be better, and focus more on being a better Standard, when WoTC doesn't have the pressure to feed Eternal formats through it. This is a side-effect of this new outlook, I believe.

    Quote from LuckNorris »
I'm looking to build a new Commander deck, but I'm having a bit of a difficult time finding a Commander that really inspires me to build a deck around it.

I'm looking for a deck that has a distinct theme, something where the Commander really dictates the kind of deck you will build. Something like Edgar Markov, (vampires) Sliver Queen (slivers). I know the examples I've given are strictly tribal, but it doesn't necessarily need to be a tribal deck either.

Another one that has intrigued me is King Macar, The Gold Cursed, just to give you an example of a kind of general I might be interested in playing. Basically, I want something 1. fun 2. decently competitive 3. with a theme or engine!

    Any help is appreciated Smile

    Thanks!

My main deck-building style is building around the commander at the very least, or being inspired by the commander but not necessarily needing it in play as a part of the main wincons.

I suggest taking a look at some of the decks in my signature, they are all premised on what you expressed, which to me sounds like "build-around" themes.

Selenia, Dark Angel is a favorite of mine. Stack the triggers to drain your own life - and then swap it with someone else's life! That's the gist of the idea, and from that I discovered many other delicious interactions through the Gatherer.

I would suggest a deep dive into the Gatherer with your favorite snack/drink at hand and just go down that rabbit hole of learning about the things that interest you. Reading the comments on the Gatherer, using the advanced search to find related keywords/archetypes will help you retain a lot of information regarding interactions - when it comes to the subjects that interest you. I find that being able to suspend more interactions into my memory informs my decisions in-game and when I build decks - and that makes me a better player.

Being able to brew my own decks - and my continued refusal to netdeck whatsoever have inspired continual growth in Magic through the necessary requirement to learn MORE. This approach means that for the 20 years I've been playing, I've never gotten bored of the game either. It is a long-term approach to find continued enrichment from this game.

I wouldn't say that you must own/pilot decks of every archetype to become better because getting whooped by them can be just as valuable a learning experience too.

Failure is sometimes just as important as success when it comes to learning new things - it's at least sign that you are trying. GL!

For those complaining about the name Massacre Girl, think about real life. How many people can you think of that go by pseudonyms/stage names/nicknames as their common name? Dwayne Johnson has been just "The Rock" forever. When talking about rappers, do you talk about about Marshall Mathers and Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. or Eminem and Snoop Dogg? Massacre Girl is an entertainer, so it makes sense for her to go by a stage name. Heck, even in my local Magic community, more people know me as Griz than Chris.

Pseudonyms are fun - and as we saw with The Wanderer - They're a theme in this block. I appreciate the lightheartedness in the design and even saw a reference to Battlebond in the two "Weirds" creatures Spellkeeper Weird & Spellgorger Weird previewed the other day.

At my LGS we have a fellow who's Krenko, Mob Boss deck is so renown that when he walks in the door - every single time - someone says "It's Krump, the goblin king!" to which the rest of the store replies, "All hail Krump, the goblin king!"

    Fun is priority no.1

Boy, I can imagine building Massacre Girl the same way Gonti is built; blink, bounce, and reanimation.

Now all we need is an artifact with an activated ability that lets you activate a triggered ability on a creature you control. Like a wonky Strionic Resonator.

It would be a useful ability to have and now that I mention it I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.

We have "copy target triggered ability" effects, how about a way to save the step of bouncing/blinking or re-cast, and just have an activation? Same number of cards required for the same outcome, aside from the obviously different mechanical interactions.

    These Nightmares - Ashiok's doing?

Nightmare is quite rare creature type (There are 29 in the game total and 6 of them are in Standard right now if we include two from WAR). I am going to assume that new Ashiok card is sort of a lord for Nightmare creatures. And creates them, of course.

Back when the Dominaria spoilers dropped that new Specter legend, I had mentioned on here that we don't have a single Nightmare legend yet....

I'll take my opportunity here to again request a Nightmare legend! I selfishly want to make a Nightmare/Horror EDH tribal deck.. I started back in Stronghold and have always loved the subtype... If only WoTC would errata Hypnox into being a legend...

Wow, Rakdos can't stop getting goodies, better grab a Blood Crypt playset soon.

I am also noticing the great things Rakdos is getting, but those are often in Rakdos colors.... This on the other hand.. Is the color pie shifting before our eyes?

    Mono-black haste?

Black had prior taken the mantle of lifelink from white
Now black has taken the mantle of haste from red

Black as a color is getting a lot of love and I like it.. my favorite color in Magic retains the mantle of doing all the things the other colors can do.

    And no drawback! Hot damn!

Haste was moved to tertiary black with GRN I think? I think there was an article about it when they covered that haste undergrowth elf card. Sometime around then. I think secondary green?

Yes I recall Yahenni, undying partisan and Nether Traitor as well; I'm glad it's showing up on a common with such an enticing confluence of cost and ability!

Wait, you're taking credit for the "idea" to print Modern-legal cards outside of Standard?

That has literally been in every Modern player's mind since the rule was announced that Modern cards must enter by way of Standard. Since the moment the format was announced.

We did it!!!!!!!! You did it!

I did my part in getting WoTC to adopt a policy for printing format-bypassing cards

More than anything, I want to express my thanks to every person who was fighting for the expansion of format-bypassing cards.

I'm wanting to celebrate the moment, there's no intent for snobbery

If you were a voice online like I was, then thank you for your contributions too! I wouldn't mind hearing how other people did their part too. This is a cathartic moment for me... likely others too!

EDIT: also, I brought all of this up in the Commander forum, I honestly have never owned a Modern deck. I made those threads while unaware of any movement within the Modern community for the same goal, so to hear you confirm others were fighting the good fight makes me very happy

When I posted 2 years ago it was after an internal thought process not at all influenced from any already-existing movements for the same goal. It was parallel thought, from the perspective of an EDH, Legacy and Vintage player

We did it!!!!!!!! You did it! The new Modern Horizons set! Certainly more people were a part of this than I was. We all did our part and we have made the game better by voicing our concerns for the health of all of the formats. Standard, for as much as I have loathed it for the problems it has presented for so long, may become a better format itself due to this change. This will help Standard stand on its own, as I described a few years ago in the links below.

I did my part in getting WoTC to adopt a policy for printing format-bypassing cards, specifically eternal format cards that skip the loathsome Standard format.

August 13th 2017 is when I shared this idea, and at the time there was no (apparent) talk elsewhere on these forums about such a novel concept being applied beyond Commander. Format-bypassing cards directly into Eternal formats. I'm glad for all of us! This means everything for the future of Magic.

I brought it up again here too, and my estimation of the situation was essentially correct. Battlebond was the first step to getting where we are today. Congrats everyone, we ALL worked hard for this. YOU get to enjoy the results of that hard work now!
