If by worse you mean "for your enemies", which seems implied by mentioned Mindwrack Liege and Verdant Sun's Avatar, a few other cards that get out of control when you own multiples are...

Most cards with landfall are pretty interesting when duplicated, but Baloths and Tracker are the best. I'd also note that while harder to duplicate, Purphoros, God of the Forge and Panharmonicon are outrageous in this sort of deck. Any ally (Turntimber Ranger) or constellation creature (Eidolon of Blossoms also does what you seek when you duplicate it out.

I didn't even consider Ally cards and that should've been obvious. That's a great idea.

I need some suggestions for cards whose abilities get worse when you have multiple copies of them. I'm currently working on a deck based around copying creatures and making tokens of those copies and I need non-legendary creatures whose effects potentially multiply or would trigger multiple times when I make a copy. One example is a card in the upcoming set, Verdant Sun's Avatar. If I have multiple copies, I should gain life for each copy when another creature enters the battlefield. Abilities like this that get worse the more copies I have are ideal for this deck. The only other cards that come to mind are the Liege cards though. The colors I'm running are Red/Blue/Green.

    Thanks.

    Protection has four aspects.

    1. A permanent or player with protection from a characteristic prevents all damage that would be dealt to it by that characteristic.
    2. A permanent or player with protection from a characteristic can't have permanents with that characteristic attached to them (so you can't equip or enchant them with things with that characteristic).
    3. A permanent or player with protection from a characteristic can't be blocked by creatures with that characteristic.
    4. A permanent or player with protection from a characteristic can't be targeted by spells or abilities with that characteristic.

In relevance to your question, this means that global damage effects will not damage a permanent with protection from that effect - for example, a creature with protection from red would not be damaged by Hour of Devastation. However, effects that say 'this damage can't be prevented' will bypass the damage prevention effect of protection (meaning that Malignus would in fact deal its damage to Progenitus).

    Thank you for the response!

    1) Protection, as you may have been told, stops DEBT:
    Damage
    Enchanting/Equipping
    Blocking
    Targeting

Therefore Progenitus has as an intrinsic part of its protection ability the quality "Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Progenitus by everything." That includes damage from combat as well as from sources that don't target it.

    2) Malignus, however, would deal combat damage to Progenitus if it's blocked by it, because protection now can't prevent the damage dealt, and "can't" effects always win out.

That's how I figured things worked. I just prefer to make sure I'm right instead of just declaring I'm right and causing others to play incorrectly. I appreciate the quick response. Your answer has definitely been helpful!

My friend is telling me that damage to each creature gets around protection, but I'm telling him that it doesn't and that only destroy/exile/return/etc will work and that the damage will still be negated. For example, if you have Progenitus on the field and activate the ability of Scourge of Kher Ridges, Progenitus would still negate that damage even though he wasn't targeted. However, if its ability said DESTROY, it would work.

Who is wrong here? Would it receive the damage, or would it negate it due to protection?

Secondary question to that, if an ability would say "this damage can't be prevented", would protection still work negate the damage? For example, if I swung with Malignus and you blocked with Progenitus, how does damage resolve?

That's what I figured. A guy I play with told me you'd still get to choose and that sounded off. But on the off chance he was right, it'd be something I'd like to abuse. Thanks for the answers!

If I have multiple triggered abilities on the stack, I get to choose what order they resolve if I remember correctly. My question is, if I use Strionic Resonator to copy one of those abilities, do I get to choose when the copied ability resolves as well? Or does it have to resolve first since it's on top of the stack? It's still a triggered ability, but it's made as a result of an activated ability so I'm unsure of how that works.

Commander tax is based on the number of times a commander has been cast from the command zone.

In the case of Deadeye Navigator, it'll come back immediately under your control regardless of whether it goes to the command zone or to exile.

Cards like Oblivion Ring that looked for "the exiled card," by contrast, can't return cards that went to the command zone instead of exile.

Ah. I misunderstood how command tax works. So I learned another new thing as well. Thanks for the response. It's just something I wanted to know for future reference.

  • posted a message on Blink Effects+Steal Until End of Turn Effects
If I cast Act of Treason to steal an opponent's creature then cast Deadeye Navigator and soulbond it to the stolen creature, do I still return their creature at the end of turn? My understanding of the Way abilities like this work is that the creature leaves as Permanent A, then comes back as Permanent B. So I was thinking that would negate the "until end of turn" portion of the ability.

If this DOES work the way I think it does, could I use Conjurer's Closet at the end step for the same outcome?

  • posted a message on Blinking A Stolen Commander
Let's say I use Blatant Thievery and steal an opponent's commander. Then I soulbond Deadeye Navigator to that creature. If I use Deadeye Navigator's ability to exile their commander and return it to the battlefield, can they choose to send it to the command zone instead to prevent me from getting it back? Or will it still be returned even if it enters the command zone? I'd like to think I'd get it back because returning to the command zone is a replacement effect for going to exile. So it should just read "return this creature to the command zone, then return it to the battlefield under your control" unless I'm misunderstanding how that rule works.

A secondary question directly related to the first. If it still returns to my battlefield even if they choose to send it to the command zone, does the commander tax apply to that situation? By that, I mean, does their decision increase their commander tax for the next time they decide to cast it?

Let's say I have Vedalken Orrery on the battlefield and use Mindslaver to steal a player's turn. Then, during their turn that I'm controlling, I flash in Tempt With Reflections from my own hand. Do I get to decide whether or not they get the copy since I control their turn? The wording on Mindslaver is that I control that player, not steal their turn. So shouldn't I be able to make voting decisions like that as well?

  • posted a message on Overwhelming Splendor and Copying
Your copy of Progenitus will still be a 10/10 with protection from everything. The only effects that copy effects carry over are other copy effects, so Overwhelming Splendor's static ability will not apply to your Clone.

If you enchant the ability-less progenitus with a control-changing aura, the protection will cause the aura to fall off. Splendor only applies to the creatures controlled by the player to which it is enchanting.

Didn't think about that. But I just mean a gain control ability in general. Not necessarily an enchantment. That wasn't a good example for this question. Just for the sake of what I was trying to say, let's say Beguiler of Wills.

If my opponent has Progenitus on the field and I enchant that player with Overwhelming Splendor, then copy Progenitus with a card like Clone, is Clone a 10/10 Progenitus with protection from everything or a 1/1 with no abilities?

A similar question but slightly different: If I cast Control Magic on that Progenitus, will it return to being a 10/10 with protection from everything or remain a 1/1 when it moves to my side of the battlefield?

  • posted a message on Dismiss Into Dream
If I have Dismiss Into Dream on the battlefield and cast a spell that targets an opponent's creature, is the creature still sacrificed if the spell that was targeting it is countered? My friend says it would be sacrificed since it was targeted to begin with, but I'm unsure of that myself.

  • posted a message on Faerie Artisans + Parallel Lives
I kinda figured that on Second Harvest. I was mostly iffy on the Way Parallel Lived would interact with it, but I kinda looked at it like this:
Since Parallel Lived is a replacement effect, you could essentially read Faerie Artisans as saying to make two tokens and exile all other tokens.

Your answer cleared things up though. Thanks for the reply!
