Pauper Review: Dominaria

The Limited Archetypes of Dominaria

Yay, the Announcement day announcement day has come!
What are the chances that we get some new info about the Magic MMO? It's been quite a while and all we have so far is that it is a thing and being developed by Cryptic, but that's pretty much it.

Should have been BG to allow Muraganda petroglyphs in his commander deck...

Anyone else thinks we could use a break from the Bolas storyline? I for one was really looking forward to a set without any of his influence.

Everything pretty much revolves around Bolas at some point.

Sure, he has been around for so long that he has his claws in basically every major event in the Multiverse, whether directly or indirectly. After the recent sets, however, I am getting a bit tired of the "it was Bolas' plan all along" plot point.

What was the first story spotlight card? We haven't seen it?

There was some art of Nissa breaking her oath, so probably that. Haven't seen it on a card yet, though.

This card is just weird. Like you can never let this guy go unblocked or you could just die. On the other hand there's little reason not to activate this right before damage. Good combo with red things like Burning Anger.

Or you can let it go unblocked and see if the opponent is too chicken to activate when you might have some removal ready. This is such a high risk - high reward card that it feels red, imo should be RW instead of mono-W.

Tetsuko Umezawa, fugitive is covered in constelations. Maybe just a coincidence, maybe not. On one hand, she is no planeswalker. On the other hand, constelations are really strongly tied to Theros and the artist could have gone with any other effect to accompany her teleporting. Besides, the Umezawas have a history with interplanar affairs.

Anyone else read the title of this thread and briefly entertain the idea that this card was about a small but sacred snack?

Glad I'm not the only one. Now I want to see an actual "Blessed light snacktime" card, probably in the next un-set.

    This is a really powerful effect. It’s a shame it’s legendary :/

Why? Multiples of this would add nothing to the effect.

Because they become dead in your hand if you have one on the battlefield. It's not about stacking effects, it's about efficient deckbuilding. This is a card you'd have 4 of in some strategies if it weren't legendary. With this, you basically have it as a 2 of.
Sort of true, but I think you would want to hold a copy og this in your hand in case the one on field gets blown up because she's very killable and has a big target on her back

    Also, Tetsuko + Rat Colony

    Tetsuko, the Pied Piper! Grin

Did we? Last I remember, he was a "mere" zombie, not a lich, much less a lich knight, much less WEARING THE CABAL'S INSIGNA. Unless I missed some recent publication, this card is gigantic news. Plus, it's the sheer awesome factor of having him as a card, now I really need to finish that Liliana tribal EDH I had in mind.

Yep, right here. But I suggest you start with the first one from Dominaria, Martha Wells is a great author.

You guys all be talking about the mechanical aspect of this card, and forgetting the most important part: OH MY GOD LILIANA'S BROTHER IS A CARD AND HE'S A ZOMBIE AND HE'S GONNA BE ON THE BAD GUYS' SIDE AND OH MY GOD LILIANA'S BROTHER IS A CARD.

We already knew about him being a lich on the bad guys' side from the story.

    Wait wait wait

Wouldn't Prismatic Omen make it work?

Lands you control are every basic land type in addition to their other types

It doesn't make them basic, just gives them the types.

Weird that it isn't legendary. Perhaps the artifact lands burned Wizards so hard that they avoid printing a historic land here?

Flavorwise, Belzenlok probably has more than one stronghold, insisting each one is the original Rathi Stronghold.

Designwise, I think they'd shy away from printing a semi-worse Cabal Coffers at legendary.

Maybe, but from the flavor text, I would assume that there is only one Stronghold.

So, 4/5 menace for 4 or 20 menacing power for 10? That's what they call two good deals.

And in a relevant tribe to boot.
