No "collector" packs, this time it's "VIP" packs.

    I'm betting on $50 a pack.

No worries. I don't know how long you've been around (the people that told me about your store referred to it as new), so I just wanted to make sure you didn't do anything early on that could get you grief from WotC. Smile

Welcome new friends! As many know by now, Titan's Entertainment Cafe is now owned by Bob & Shannon Huffman of BC Comix, in Fenton MI.

What does that mean to you? It means QUALITY. Bob & Shannon took a new store in Fenton with gaming giants around them, and turned BC into *the* destination point in the tri-cities area. BC has hosted the Michigan State MtG championship on several occasions, as well as PTQ's and numerous Star City and TCG player events. BC has a reputation for quality gaming, and we invite you to come out and spend your pre-release weekend with us to see the great changes that are being made!

Many of you may not be familiar with what you get at a BC pre-release. Allow me to summarize:

    1. 5 packs per player in the prize pool and a guaranteed 2 packs just for playing in our events! Even if you just sign up, get your 6 packs and drop, you're getting 2 packs for showing up!

    2. Aggressive card buying / trading! BC will be buying / trading for cards all weekend. When you open that great new card, get a fair deal from BC.

    3. Singles! Even though the main attraction of the weekend will be the new cards in Born of the Gods, you still have standard, pauper, Commander, Modern, Vintage, Legacy and casual decks to build! We have all your card needs.

    4. A history of excellence. BC Comix has been running in Fenton for several years, and has been successful because the owners believe in being hands-on and always willing to listen to you for ideas. That commitment has made the Fenton store one of the best places to play, and we intend to bring that tradition to you as well!

BORN OF THE GODS PRE-RELEASE KIT:
Each Born of the Gods pre-release kit will contain the following:
    3 Theros booster packs
2 Born of the Gods booster packs
1 booster pack specifically constructed for your color of choice, from both Theros and Born of the Gods. This pack will include your pre-release promo card.
    1 spindown life counter die
Stage 4 of the hero cards that started appearing with Theros. You can't use this card in your deck, but it will be used for later events.

A few things I've seen as a judge over the last several years, some of these might be mentioned in previous comments:

Rule #1 is, without a doubt, TALK TO THE JUDGE. If you have a question, call a judge over. If there is a problem, talk to the judge! We can't fix things when we find out about them 2 rounds later, or worse yet never at all. We want you to have a good time and come back! One of the worst things to hear is "I think my opponent 2 rounds ago was cheating" or "My opponent last round said it worked this way, and I just believed him" or similar statements. Please call us over when the question occurs.

    2. Until you're familiar with the format, talk to the judge and ask them to make sure your deck is legal. When I judge FNM, I have my cashier asking new faces if they've played in FNM before and if they would like the judge to make sure their deck is legal.

    3. Be prepared to lose. A lot. I tell the same story to every new player about how my brother and I got into this game and quickly dominated our circle of friends, then went to a local tournament and got our heads kicked in. We didn't pout, we didn't quit, we wanted to get better - so we watched the people who won, and learned what they were doing right. We got better, and started to dominate that local weekly tournament. Went to a higher level of competition, got our heads kicked in. Repeat the process.

TLDR: You learn nothing in this game by winning.

    4. Be careful about trading. There are plenty of sharks that are there to rip you off. If you're not sure, ask for help. Don't just accept "well, your side is $40 and my side is $40, so it's even." $40 of crap cards is not worth a $40 high-demand card from a tier 1 deck.

    Quote from FoodChainGoblins
It works at a competitive level, but at FNM, the Judges are more lenient, despite some players being known for taking a long time. Sadly, our FNMs often play for $75 to $150 worth of cards for 1st place. Frown

Then you should talk to the judge and the store owner. FNM is regular REL, but once you start giving competitive level prizes out you need to tighten up on rules enforcement. I've always hated high prizes like that at FNM because it only encourages things like stalling and cheating.

As to the original post about 40 minute rounds, I hate them. The only place in my area that does them is one store at pre-release. My theory is that they do it because they pay out their prizes based on score not standing in all events, and more ties means less product given out.

It's not rude to offer the handshake if you win. That's a claim started by sore losers. I always offer a handshake, win or lose. If my opponent got really screwed over on something, or if I pull a win out of a topdeck, I make sure to compliment their deck and say that the game most likely would have gone another direction if not for (whatever). If someone takes offense at me offering a handshake when I won the match, too bad.
