Buy MM3 Foil Liliana of the VeilFoil for $125? That's enough that I can't just drop it - I'd need to save up for it. Will there be enough additional MM3 hitting the market to keep that price or even drop it a little? Or is this the best I can do, and I should pull the trigger as soon as I can?

I keep hearing rumors of a second wave of MM3 coming out at some point. Probably between Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation.

Really it comes down to whether or not you believe those rumors. If you believe them, hold off. If you don't, buy in. As an FYI - you can get them for less than that on TCG, and the high end facebook page you could easily snipe one for $110 or $115.

The picture is welcome, but a better picture would be better.

I can't see anything wrong with the hologram stamp at that resolution. I've seen a lot of imperfect stamps fresh from the pack, and I don't open a ton of cards. It's not impossible for the stamp to flake, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

As far as the corner goes, again, that's within tolerance. I'd call that a slight miscut rather than assume a fake. If anything, a counterfeiter would be more likely to cut perfect corners - that's probably the easiest part of the job.

Agreed on all accounts. Additionally if you are that concerned over whether this is a fake or not, buy a jeweler's loupe. you can get them off Amazon for $10. Especially if you buy a fair amount of cards online it's an easy way to check to see if cards are faked or not. I still have yet to see a fake with rosettes good enough to look original.

If you are really unhappy with this card you could probably go to the misprints facebook page and try to auction it off. Not sure if it would command much of a premium but it would allow you to recoup some/most of your money and try again.

Guys how low will Damnation go? It's currently trending around 12 euros at MCM but it seems like it's slowing down. Is something like 5 euro realistic?
    https://www.magiccardmarket.eu/Products/Singles/Modern Masters 2017 Edition/Damnation

Pure guesstimation here, but I'd guess it'll bottom out around $10. $5 is highly unlikely.

Glad to help! Also glad to see that you're not doing the trade. A part of me is always sad when really slick cards get traded away for realistically less than they are worth.

On a side note, I have *GOT* to set aside some cash to get a foil Cavern of Souls. That art makes me drool.

Hey guys first ever miscut and it's a Tarmogoyf and I was wondering what I do as I was sent it from a store - the card is still standard dimensions.

    Pictures below

get an invite to this facebook group:

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/MTGmisprints/

Make a new post, start an auction for it and see where it goes. While you aren't seeing another card, this is a significant miscut and should increase the value.

    Jeff,

Thanks for the very long reply. It was really insightful to see how the little individual stores operate and just how risky of a business venture it is to run a store. I think my biggest take away from this is that the local stores (communities) where people play aren't really doing all that well and are probably struggling just to make ends meet. Add to that Wizards' reprinting policies make it even more difficult for the stores to make money and I really wonder why and how people are legitimately making a business venture succeed.

    Thanks again!

I have a play set of Ravnica Foil Dark Confidant. A guy wants to trade with me and knows I am building foil Abzan Company, missing mostly some lands, Birds, and Noble Hierachs.

    His offer is this...

    His:
    2 Judge Noble Hierarch
    2 Gavony Township foil
    $50

    My:
    3 Ravnica Foil Dark Confidant

(He will trade or buy the last one some time down the road, hopefully.)

From a straight TCGlow perspective, his pile is $358. Your pile is $383. You'd be giving up $25 in value before you start. (if there is cash involved I always defer to TCG low pricing). Ironically the OG foil of confidant is worth more than the judge foil.

Additionally, many people (myself included) prefer the old art on bob than the new art. This also shows up in the pricing where an MM15 foil can be had for just $50 and MM13 for $70.

Longer term, the fact that the old art will likely never be reprinted makes me believe that it'll hold better value longer than the hierarchs.

If it were me, I'd hang on to the original Bobs. If you are going to do the trade, I'd recommend having the other guy throw in some other value to even things out.

its a good time to pick up fetchslands?

Im wanting to buy 2x arid mesa at 20 each and another one at 21, 2x marsh flat one at 14 and another 17, also 1x scalding tarn at 32, i already traded one for 30

are great prices compared how they was some months ago, but i will be lover or will spike again?

You should really read the reddit article that Rogue Love has in the post above yours.

that article also references an MTGGoldfish article that is also excellent:

    https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/modern-on-sale

TL:DR version: wait at least 2 months after release for best pricing, and it continues on until 6-7 months after release before prices start their inevitable climb upward. This information was gleaned through the release of MM2 and the price trends that the set had. It likely held true for EMA as well, though I'd imagine that MM1 didn't follow that trend due to the severely restricted supply.

I'd say that your window to sell closed when the announcement was made. Prices on Modern Masters 3 reprints have already softened. Hang on to them - they're near their nadir now, and foils recover pretty well.

Thank you for this. I'll hang onto them and hope they recover a little bit. I almost just put them up for fire-sales. Luckily I'm lazy just enough...

Just pulled foil Cavern of Souls from MM2017. Should I sell or keep? Not sure what to make of the foils in this set.

I'd actually keep the foil Cavern. The art on it is amazing and it's an EDH and casual staple. I would guess it could have a similar trajectory as Doubling Season in terms of casual appeal.

Cracked half of a MM2017 box for fun, I am for sure selling the Tarmogoyf ( i play EDH) and also got a foil Verdant Catacombs plus a non foil one. Sell now the foil one in order to break even my half or keep it? What will be the ceiling of the foil catacomb? I don't pimp my decks so I am not sure I am interested in keeping the foil version.

The downward pressure on foils has been..... extreme. More so that I would have ever imagined. I have two trains of thought. One is sell ASAP. IMO, the better play is to wait 1 year (if you have the patience) for prices on them to rebound. Fetches are the gold standard of lands and are among the safest bets to rebound.

If it were me, I'd hold off at least a year for prices to recover.

So, my neighbor and I were cracking packs yesterday to build sealed decks, and he opened a Fatal Push:foil:. Right now, the card is at an insane $30. It's also got a really good chance at being a promo in the near future. He thinks that the best plan is to move it before the inevitable promo arrives, and I think that an FNM promo won't really touch the original pack foil. What do you, the collective minds of finance, think? Is this card a Hold or a Move?

I think a goodly portion of the discussion would center around the artwork that is chosen for the promo (if printed). The promo art would have to just be awesome (think original Cavern of Souls versus MM17 reprint art awesomeness)in order for the original pack foil to be effected. And even then there are still a ton of people who will prefer the original printing foil over any other version including a promo.

I think the card is a solid hold for the foreseeable future.

That's how I see it. Every big hobby I have dumped a lot of money into for the past decade has been one that has liquid assets. If I want to (or need to) cash out of them, I can do so with relative ease and get most of my money back. DSLR photography, firearms, Magic cards; all things that have a lot of expensive pieces that hold value over time. And I can justify purchasing them BECAUSE of that held value (both monetarily and in that hobby's context). However, that is a secondary function of the hobby; the first is always to use and enjoy the pieces. It just so happens that if I want to get some of that money back when I am "done" with something (or upgrading to something new), it's a nice bonus to recoup much of the investment cost. It helps me from feeling like I am simply pissing away money. I'd much rather spend $100 on a foil Scalding Tarn than on a single night out for dinner and drinks.

Here Here! We have identical hobbies BTW - and I have almost as much money tied up in firearms as I do in Magic. But again, those assets are liquid. As long as the market doesn't crash they will retain value. Sure, the MM series will deflate that value a bit, but that's easily manageable. A whole scale crash of the market on the other hand...

Then again I'm a dirty casual player who just likes to collect cards and rarely gets to play because I have two young children. So take what I say with a grain of salt.

Magic is also a hobby and not a basic human right. I too was a broke undergrad student between '09 and '14; that also just so happens to be the time period when I chose not to play the game and focus on school/work. I'm now back in school, working on my phd, and thanks to the two years I took off to work-post grad, I'm able to play again while in school (Although I have wayy less time now, so not as much as I'd like to).

At the end of the day, it's a hobby and hobbies cost money. You seem to be a fiscally responsible student and although cost is a barrier now, it doesn't mean that it will continue to be so in the future. Most college students (myself included) drink piss-water beer for four years because it's cheap; I'd be willing to bet that a graph plotting 'Age/Career Progress' against 'Tastes in Alcoholic Beverages' would suggest that the Natty Light demographic doesn't go much further than 24 years old. Magic is very similar to booze; it's a luxury item that has different price points, so it can be enjoyed by a variety of folks. Just like the average college kid isn't sipping on Blue Label every weekend, the average college-aged magic player probably isn't gonna be able to foil out tier 1 modern decks. That's life.

I wanted to highlight this again. One of the things that makes Magic a wonderful game is just what you said above. You can play the game effectively on a $50 budget or $5,000 budget. I'd also wager that many of us started playing at the $50 end and have worked our way up higher as we got jobs and started having disposable income. Another analogy that fits in nicely with your alcohol metaphor is that many magic players have champagne taste on a beer budget.

Back when I was in college the power 9 was all the rage. Everyone wanted to own some but nobody had that kind of money laying around. So we dreamed about the day we could earn enough and finally buy those pieces. In the mean time we were still playing with janky tribal decks and mishmashes of cards that would generously be called casual decks. But that was fun, and my group of friends had a blast with it.

We should also remember that Magic's largest segment of players are casual. They spend according to what they can afford, and probably spend less time netdecking and following trends than anyone on this board.

Pithing Needle and Scroll Rack Masterpiece for $72 store credit?

I don't really need the masterpieces, but I'd also wouldn't mind using the credit to buy into another modern deck. I'm not strapped for cash so I can always just buy the modern deck, I just don't like cards sitting in my binder that I don't need.

According to TCG, these Masterpieces together are roughly $90 in trade value. So my counterquestions for you are -

"Do you go to GPs or other large events? What's trading like at your local store? Do you like trading?"

Basically, if you think that you'll be able to move them for more relevant cards, then don't take the store credit offer, as you're passing up on $20. If you hate trading, or if your store doesn't have people who have Modern cards for trade (this seems less likely after MM17 hits the streets), or if nobody has ever expressed interest in those particular Masterpieces, then go ahead and take the store credit. I would personally hold them, since I tend to hit up 3-4 GPs per year, and you can always find someone who wants what you have at a big event. If nothing else, you can probably move them for MM17 reprints in a couple weeks.

Agreed! If all you're doing is looking for modern cards, I think you should try to trade them away! If you haven't traded on this site, you can do so here as well. I have most of the modern staples and would be willing to trade them to you for masterpieces at fair market value. Send me a PM.. We might be able to make a trade.

    Hi everyone

    Pile A
    Taiga LP Revised

    Pile B
    Maze of Ith The Dark
    Stoneforge Mystic Worldwake
    Wasteland LP Tempest

    I assume take the Dual

    Pile A
    Verdurous Gearhulk x2

    Pile B
    Sunken Ruins Expedition

    I assume take Pile B

    cheers

Yeah, I'm all for the Taiga and the Expo here. Wasteland is still riding at a shocking low, so now is a good time to pick them up and not trade them away - but WOTC has demonstrated that they're more than willing to reprint this legacy staple, so I don't see it as a good long-term plan. Revised duals are pretty solid as always.

As for the second trade, Sunken Ruins is nothing special, but an Expedition beats two standard-only mythics most any day of the week.

Seconded! The dual land is always golden. The trade you make is actually one where I think it's fair for both parties assuming the person trading for pile B needs them to play. It's a classic win/win trade and one where neither side is getting ripped off.

The second trade is easily one where I'd take the sunken ruins. Next year the gearhulks will be bulk. If you have the ability to wait that long this is a no brainer.
