I'd keep it, open it and try to build a sealed deck with it. Then get a friend and play your first sealed deck against it!

Drafting is something else entirely. If you're not sure how to draft or have a decent amount experience in thinking about pick orders, you will not do well. Luckily when it comes to drafting there are a TON of videos put on by pros on their thought processes on drafting. It might be in your interests to watch them play.

Also, try to find some videos of how others play decks similar to yours. It might give you some insight into doing things differently against similar scenarios.

Hey there - have a question for everyone. Just looking to get thoughts/opinions/support. I'm in the process of purchasing a 9.5 graded City of Traitors test foil (the one with the black border and Magic back that's tournament legal). I got a good deal on it, and my intention is to eventually get a playset and actually use them. After all, I am a collector but a player at heart and I buy cards to use them. I'm getting a mixed reaction from some of my peers. Others agree with me in the sense that, "why buy if you aren't going to play with it?" However, some think I'm crazy to crack a card graded that high. From what I've seen, most of these test prints are in really good condition. Ultimately, I realize it's my decision but I just wanted to gauge community input.

    Thanks!

If you're willing to take the risk of taking a 9.5 and playing with it and causing some minor damage, that would be my primary concern. I'm also a collector and would have to really think hard about playing with something that's worth more than a mint black lotus. Personally unless I was building a deck to just go ultra pimp to the max, I'd just buy regular ones to play with and keep ~$7k/ea cards encased in hard plastic.

My logic is this - even a minor dent would take a 9.5 and degrade it to a 9.0 or even 8.5. The value loss of that alone would be worth more than a regular playset.

Dominance is more difficult to find because it's occasionally run in Tezzerator decks. I ran into the same problem as I looked to complete my set.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I was just wondering if there was any sort of wild speculation that might push it one way or another; I'm not an MMO guy, so I wasn't sure if that sort of thing would tilt stuff.

I'm pretty surprised to come back after about a year or so's break and find what the values on my cards are like. I'm not too surprised Zen fetches tanked because of that reprint, but my foil shocks have nearly halved in price. The average price on my cube on CubeTutor dropped $2K. My Expeditions have tanked at least $20 per. My foil Jace is waaaay down to $300 and my poor Tarmogoyfs have nearly halved in price since Eternal Masters. Don't even get me started on the eternal masters foil printings I speculated on, Daze and Winter Orb really didn't pay off at all. The only pleasant surprise I came back to was that my foil Lorwyn Thoughtseize has gone from around $200 up to $500. It really feels like it's time to cash out before further reprints or a decline of interest in the game destroy my entire collection's value.

Yep. Wizards' reprinting policies has made collecting anything that isn't RL a dangerous proposition. I don't even want to think about how much I've lost, but it has to be a similar amount to yours. It's made me not want to buy anything that isn't on the RL.

I understand your sentiment about the Khans fetches, but it feels somewhat like those are safe for another few years. Pricing on them isn't really high right now and they probably won't crater too much farther if reprinted. Also, believe it or not I think seeing the enemy fetches printed in a masters set gives me the feeling that Wizards doesn't want to see fetch lands printed in standard sets anymore. That is a good thing if you're looking to hold onto cards. I think Wizards will hold off reprinting the allied fetches for some time to let them grow in value. They are the gold standard for lands and will sell a set by themselves once they reach a certain value.

Plus there is the added benefit of if you want to make a competitive deck, you better have your playset of fetches ready to go.

Personally I'm holding on to two playsets of all the fetches (one original and one of the reprints (khans/MM17)). Building anything is much easier when you have the mana base figured out.

So, the next FTV probably has Jace, Vryn's Prodigy. How big of an impact do you expect this to have on the Origins printing?

I have a set that I kept just because I think it's likely to be a future format staple that's hard to reprint, but I guess nothing's a guaranteed hold these days.

Dual faced cards are still far better to hold on to than anything not on the reserve list simply because they are harder to print. You did right on that front, but it is still a risk. At some point there will be enough DFCs to warrant a reprint. Everything not on the RL is still a risky proposition in that respect.

On the price of Jace, I don't think you're going to see a major hit to his price. The FTV series simply doesn't put that many cards into circulation, and certainly nothing compared to the supply provided by Origins. As an example, Dark Depths had severe supply issues, and there are probably 10 times more Jaces running around than Marit Lages and the depths only took a $20 hit. Given supply differences, I'd guess that Jace will decrease by no more than $2-$4 based on the FTV printing.

Also note that there are a lot of people who A) don't like the FTV foiling process, B) don't like foils at all, or C) prefer original printings of cards.

Hard to tell right now what will happen with Bolas. He looks like the ultimate control deck finisher - similar to Cruel Ultimatum, and control has some decent tools to play with right now. There are a few good counterspells in standard right now. I think his pricing will be completely dependent on the viability of a grixis style control deck, or a 2 color control deck splashing black or red.

Also, given that we some anti counterspell cards in Amonkhet, it's reasonable to assume that Grixis control will probably get another toy or two in HOU to play with. My hope is that with Marvel being gone, we might see a good control deck appear.

So, with Marvel getting banned, how low are its key cards going to go?

    1. Ulamog - Sub-10 bux

Look at what happened to Emrakul when it got banned. It went from a high of 20 then crashed to 6-8 bucks and has never recovered. It's still a fine card, but once it's not in Standard play, it has virtually no demand. Without Marvel, it's hard to see Ulamog remaining a big player in Standard, either, and he's rotating not too far into the future. Craash!

    2. Marvel - 2 bux

It's already available for 2.50 and it's not going anywhere too far down because it's already at the price point where casuals can pick it up for decks. I would say enablers like this are destined to grow over time, but not parasitic ones like this. I expect to see Marvel follow Digiridoo's price trajectory - it'll spike whenever they revisit Energy as a mechanic and not otherwise.

I certainly agree with your prediction on Marvel. There simply aren't enough good energy enablers to play it outside of Standard.

On Ulamog, in the short term I could see it getting to $10 with rotation eminent. However, I'm not sold on it staying there. You're talking about a casual favorite and reasonable card to cast in Tron decks. If it hits $10, I certainly wouldn't expect it to stay there for more than 6 months or so as it starts to rebound from the inevitable price drop that comes from rotating out of standard.

Kind of a strange question, but does anyone think the upcoming MTG MMO might cause an uptick in popularity in the game as a whole, leading to overall price bumps? I'm in the process of inventorying my whole collection for possible sale, but I'm in no rush, so if something like that could raise the price of everything I'd be plenty interested in waiting.

Honestly, if Wizards didn't believe the MMO Would increase the popularity of the card game why would they do it? I do believe that the MMO will lead to increased exposure to the game - sort of a hearthstone in reverse. How much of an increase remains to be seen. However, I don't think you'll see another increase like we saw from 2010-2014 when the player base exploded.

I would anticipate some sort of growth, but card prices inflating significantly because of it? Color me skeptical. Doubly so with Wizards changing how much and how frequently they are reprinting cards. I kind of anticipate anything not on the reserve list to stagnate on prices.

I have a fairly substantial (5k+) collection I'm looking to get rid of, just lost that spark of the game and would rather have the cash. In this board experience, how much do expensive collections tend to fetch? TCG Low -10%? TCG Low -20%? Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated!

I would actually try the high end facebook page. Things usually move very quickly there and you can avoid paying the fees. There are actually several pages on MTG sales - there's the high end page, buy/sell/trade page, collectors, etc. If you want to sell an entire collection in 1 shot, you'll have to take less than TCG low - 20%. If you're willing to piecemeal it out, you can get close to TCG low - 10%.

Well, I didn't think I'd come back to the thread and see several posts that basically are pro slow heat death of the card game, but okay. It's what people seem to want to argue for by being afraid of store shelves not having product, which is really a problem on wizards not printing enough boxes because if people are buying them, whether collectors or players, that means wizards made something actually good.

That would be a few light years ahead of what has been going on the last two years now. The last actually good product I can remember was the Origins Duel decks that had Tasigur, the fetchland, and Siege Rhino along with other goodies like Anafenza. Now it's basically a 60 box set that has walkers that only hold their price because of no reprints instead of actual demand and what good reprints there are available in the set to drive sales there's barely enough to justify the MSRP. It's not like the walkers are Domri Rad or Tibalt level bad, but still.

It'll be interesting to see how well/poorly the Archenemy/Planechase reboots do. They must have had enough of a following the first go round to have a second bite at the apple. If this series is as bad as Colt47 is prognosticating, we'll know in a few years because we won't see an Archenemy 3 or Planechase 2020 or whatever. I'm also happy to see Wizards pushing the boundaries with unusual products like these. It's a different way to play the game that appeals to an audience other than the entrenched and invested players they we (mostly) are around here. If it fails, so be it. At least Wizards is trying to market the game to other segments than just its enfranchised players. Players who would analyze the EV of the list and then buy it out if it was out of proportion.

Given the fact that Wizards releases products literally every month now, it stands to reason that some products will simply not interest certain portions of its player base.

/edit honestly I would rather Wizards have a product flop like this than have another Homelands or Fallen Empires type set come out. Make sure the core of the game (standard sets) is taken care of and experiment in secondary products like this.

But I actually would say there isn't anything collectible, or more accurately, not enough to make it worthwhile to anyone. The fact they can make commander products great and then do something like this and planechase anthology is making me wonder if the same people are even putting these lists together.

Well, collectibility is very subjective and changes from person to person on their viewpoints. What is collectible to one person is utter trash to another. There is a subset of people who collect foil Storm Crow. Add that to the fact that there is a much larger casual group that plays versus the competitive scene and I can see a market for the schemes. I agree that the deck lists are nothing special.

On the other hand I have a couple of friends who only play with their wives and kids who might buy a handful of boosters every other year. This product would be perfect for them to play as a prepackaged set right out of the gate. They certainly don't have any of the recent gatewatch crew, so it would be new cards for all of them... It's actually a good idea! I should buy it for them as a gift.

Its not really that the value of the product is low, its that none of the decks look even remotely fun to play.

But that goes back to the previous point: if there are no good reprints than they are basically marketing to some mythical garden gnome audience of non_magic players that happen to be interested in really shoddy made board games, because compared to dominion wizards packaging is horrible. To top things off it's supposed to be a collectable card game. If the product has nothing worth collecting why the heck did they waste time and money making it? Advertising? Space invaders?

This product is basically snake oil meant to scalp some unknowledgeable impulse buyer.

Sorry, but the schemes themselves are collectible. They could just sell the schemes separately and do fine. I'm thinking about buying it solely for that reason.

Agreed this is a very niche market within the Magic community, same as Planechase, but to say there isn't anything collectible in here....
