Ok, so we know have three gay men who are somewhat iffy on the idea of Chandra/Nissa MTG's first LBGTQ representation. I'd really love to know what opinion a lesbian player would have on the matter. Any takers?

    Quite curious about that myself.

Also, any thoughts on Hal and Alena's appearances.
While I'm a secondary source for this, the majority of people I saw on Tumblr were only angry about Hal and Alena not getting a card, and had nothing but praise for the rest of their presentation. Unfortunately, I haven't seen much talk about Chandra/Nissa specifically, but that is likely due to the people I follow having different (but equally lesbian) ships for both. So I think they'd be fairly supportive of Chandra/Nissa, given that I rarely see the "it's only exploitative representation" argument used by actual lesbian and bi women, who would just like some sort of major representation at all before we start quibbling over how exploitative it is (Which I personally feel is more a function of how it's presented, not inherent to it being a lesbian or gay relationship).

Personally, I think it would be best if both Gideon/Jace and Chandra/Nissa got together in a short amount of time, thus proving that practically no one in the Gatewatch is straight.

Serious real-deal honest question - What would be interpreted as 'exploitative representation' and why?

I would interpret it as utilizing a character(particularly of a minority group) in a way that's solely motivated by marketing appeal to (or social beliefs of) their primary demographic while potentially reinforcing negative stereotypes, or otherwise outright misrepresenting the depicted group(s).

The example mentioned previously in thos thread for inatance: overt sexualization of lesbian characters, as a means of appealing to an IP's heterosexual male demographic, rather than a more reasonable/realistic depiction of a lesbian couple, meant to appeal to, or simply accurately reflect, the lgbt segment of the consumer base.

I can only really think of a few entities that she might consider herself answerable to:

The Soratami (collectively, or perhaps a superior/mentor)
The Myojin (she still upholds and honors many of Kamigawa's traditional beliefs)
The Sisters of Flesh and Spirit (the end-all-be-all of Kamigawa's authority)

Any of those she could resonably avoid by simply avoiding Kamigawa(some of them she could probably defeat/destroy id it came down to it) but she seems the type to hold herself accountable, even if there was no way that THEY could.

Tamiyo is a mother and has a close family so I think she'd want to return home at some point.

    There is that, too.

I wasn't really suggesting avoidance as a course of action, just acknowledging its possibility. Really I was more attempting to emphasize that she would likely hold herself accountable even towards planebound beings that themselves had little or no means of holding her to her word. (assuming she doesn't have some kind of contractual binding like Liliana)

I'm of two minds about the possibility of Chandra/Nissa.

On the one hand I'd kinda feel like it was a cop out. Lets face it, two hot girls hooking up in an IP targeted at teen boys is hardly groundbreaking, and if done poorly can be more harm than good. Does the world really need more fetishization of lesbians by heterosexual men?

I think it would be more impactful if the LGBT representation were male/male or another less accepted pairing.

On the other hand, representation of realistic (and non-evil) lesbians in media is still lacking as well. And I could simply be biased as I am a gay man, thus inherently would prefer "me" being represented.

ETA: The cynic in me also finds it doubtful that if/when the LGBT community gets Planeswalker representation that it would be (not) one (but two) of their flagship characters. Far more likely a secondary character so that they can introduce them and then have an excuse not never see them again or only rarely utilize them afterwards. Particularly since there will be criea of "shoving it down [people's] throats."

I'm curious as to what might have happened on the plane Arlinn walked too when her spark ignited. What plane it was. Whether she might have spread lycanthropy there. Whether that's even possible, or how it would manifest if it were possible. Etc.

As I said before (just two comments above, in fact), it's unlikely innistradi lycanthropy works outside of Innistrad.

But even if it was, the means of curse transmission seem to be a very complex hunting ritual, which I doubt she went out of her way to perform.

Honestly I agree that it's highly unlikely. I mostly just think it would be a nice way to support the werewolf tribe without having to wait for returns to one specific plane, or dealing with the complications of integrating DFCs into other sets. Because with werewolves being DFCs, it's equally unlikely that we'd ever see them in supplementary sets as is either.

It's just annoying that out of all the Innistrad tribes ONLY werewolves lack extra-block support. And even intra-block they've now suffered considerable upheaval (mechanically, flavorfully, or otherwise) in both Innistrad blocks.

I honestly feel that Olivia's role in this story should have been filled by Arlinn. I really feel like she would have been a much better fit.

Like others I was disappointed in how little Sigarda did. She may as well have not been in the story at all.

Also, did anyone else note the continuity error in that Olivia was still wielding the sword from her card art, and not the sword she stole from Sorin?

That's the first problem with the Two-set-Block thingie, there are much fewer cards to distribute among the different block themes now.

Also, the werewolves got not only fewer cards, they didn't get anything really new in SOI besides Vildin-Pack Alpha, Immerwolf got replaced by an enchantment and they never got any useful transform triggers such as Werewolf Ransacker besides Ulrich which is more a throwback to Huntmaster of the Fells.

It really is a shame that there aren't more transformation triggered abilities. It's werewolves' defining characteristic, it would seem like it'd be a no-brainer to build upon it.

There are very few werewolves that you actually want to transform back to their human side. It's a strange situation where in general you don't actually WANT to use the tribe's mechanic beyond the initial flip.

More transformation triggers would increase the desire to actually interact with the tribe's identifying mechanic.

It kind of sucks too, not interested in Koth but we could use some more mono-Red Planeswalkers out and about. The only other one I can think of (Daretti) really doesn't seem likely to appear elsewhere either. Hard to tell what WotC will do with either of them. I would guess that it kind of depends on which thing Nahiri does, return to Zendikar or try to find Ugin. At least it seems like she could add something to a return to Tarkir. Koth on the other hand is really in a bad place.

I tend to see Koth a bit differently. True, he's very much about fighting for the purity of Mirrodin and the last of its survivors, but I don't think that's all there is to him. Whereas Chandra is more emotional and free-spirited, Koth seems to be more about red's elements of resistance and true freedom at any cost, along with a desire for peace and unity rarely seen among mono-red characters. Whereas Chandra tends to the more radical elements of red, Koth seems to be more towards the middle; calmer unless pushed and more set and confident in his goals and actions. I think creatively that allows a very different space than Chandra. Like Elspeth left Mirrodin and found a cause aligned with her convictions in Theros, I could see Koth doing the same if Mirrodin is truly lost. Maybe on Vryn or a new plane where a resistance force needs a leader?

To the point on Nahiri, it does seem like Creative backed themselves into a corner. It'll be hard to simply write a quick 180 to hero again, and also difficult to give her new motivation with her revenge on Sorin completed in her mind. Ugin seems most likely, but if Creative wanted a redemption arc, I could see a long side-quest where she sees her error through the failure or corruption of another revenge-set villain. If done right, Ob Nixilis and her reunion could offer a nice mirror-image story where she sees what path she's following. Cliche, probably, but it COULD BE done right. I'm interested to see what's next for her.

I think they're setting her up as a future Gatewatch antagonist.

I fully expect her to find out how the eldrazi got released (or at least, part of the story) and expand her revenge to include "everyone responsible."

There are already hints that she's not exactly stable. For six thousand years her life had a specific purpose. Imagine the sort of disillusionment that can set in when she suddenly finds herself adrift with no REASON for being. She needs a new cause, and while sure that cause *could be* helping rebuild Zendikar, that's not very interesting for us the audience.

More interesting would be Bolas tracking her down and telling her just enough of the truth, that it was (members of) the gatewatch who (unintentionally) unlocked the seal at the Eye of Ugin, released the Eldrazi and devastated Zendikar.

This would restore meaning to her life, and Bolas could see it as eliminating a potential obstacle to his future plans.

I feel like people who say that this is Sorin's fault because if Nahiri had been there she could have saved Zendikar are ignoring just who orchestrated the release of the Eldrazi to begin with. This is Nicol mutha******* Bolas we're talking about. If Nahiri had been there he would have just needed to make arrangements to kill her too. Hell he could just do it himself. Unlike Ugin all he would have to do is munch on her.

We can realize that, but Nahiri has no way of knowing that currently. It's quite possible Bolas will be the next target for her, but even if she had some idea of who he was I could see her blaming Sorin still. Short of knowing about Alara I don't think she'd consider him outside her capability to handle, and possibly even then, not like she's in a healthy frame of mind.

Who exactly know that Bolas was ultimately responsible? Who would she have to encounter to learn that?

True. So I guess it's hard to imagine Nahiri finding it out ever. More likely I guess is Nahiri finding out about Jace, Nissa, Sarkhan, and Chandra. Not sure how but her wanting to take them out seems like a believable villain route.

I think that it puts her in a sweet spot as future Gatewatch antagonist. There's at least some implication that she's not in a particularly balanced state of mind. It's not that much of a stretch for her to extend her revenge quest to "everyone responsible."

Three of the five Gatewatch members were directly, if unintentionally, involved in the release of the Eldrazi and devastation of Zendikar.

So. Will we get any "good aligned" Werewolves this set..?

Mechanically, the only real werewolf we are getting is Ulrich.

Which is absolutely ridiculous and I'm not even a fan of the tribe.

It honestly confounds me that they essentially did the exact same thing to werewolves in both Innistrad blocks.

In both blocks set on the plane they've used the last set to completely screw over the tribe. AVR made them all into Wolfir, EMN made them all into Eldrazi.

It's extra infuriating because unlike every single other tribe on the plane, werewolves ONLY get support in Innistrad blocks, so screwing them in even a single set has a much harsher impact.

Oh, wow.... so as a final nail in the coffin, Wizards finally devolves into turning Sorin into the villain of the block to be defeated by "the forces of good", huh?

I think I should start considering talking about shipping in this thread to pass the time...

It's a little hard to call Nahiri a "force for good" at this point. Lacking any objective outside hurting Sorin renders her, at least with regard to SOI, pretty unambiguously evil.
