The End of an Era

Momir and Pauper Daily events were almost like a ticket ATM machine, but are now gone. Before Theros was released, I decided to buy playsets of the shocks I didn't already have. Now that the Daily Event schedule has been poisoned, I won't need them. To stay afloat without the Momir and Pauper DE events, I will need to pay more attention to when to buy/sell What direction are you taking with RtR shocks?

Not taking into account the humongous insurance money some individuals received from the WTC buildings, the documents destroyed in the building 7 related to the huge budget deficit scandal announced at the time, creating a crisis state which enabled the implementation of heavy-handed gov't control policies for more than a decade and uniting a nation against a common enemy after the reds ceased to become a thing and more, but of course that's slightly off topic.

Amen. "Is this real world or exercise?"

I have enjoyed the dialogue this thread has opened up. I like how in Kibler's blog he mentions "conspiracy theories" regarding the idea that this is a move to reduce prize support. It makes me think of the police officer warning of prosecution for spreading misinformation after Sandy Hook, or George Bush being mad that "second guessing has become second nature" in Washington regarding people who question the official report of 911.

I have not yet once see a pro/Magic figure step up and demand that, once things are fixed, 4-Round Daily Events return with the same payout and 6 ticket entry fee. I wonder why?

The elimination of the ability to go infinite is too great a shake up to Magic Online to not have a carefully orchestrated plan to do so.

I do not completely believe the "official story" relating to the events of September 11, 2001 in New York City. I also have my reservations about what was reported about the Sandy Hook tragedy last year in Newtown, Connecticut. I do believe the entire suspension of Daily Events on Magic Online was a carefully crafted plan, with a well known pro participating in a giant lie.

I feel like WotC needed to create a situation in which they could completely get rid of Daily Events, which pump packs into the online economy at a price way below the online store's retail. I believe Brian Kibler was set up to go 7-0 in the MOCS (we need to see game replays if anyone was involved. I have a feeling his opponents were dealt awful hands on purpose to set up the 7-0 record). Wizards intentionally crashed the event, so he could do what he did, which lead to the events being pulled. Simply crashing the event wouldn't be enough. They needed a powerful, handsome Hall of Famer to be (or appear to be) the driving force behind this.

We have seen the "positive EV" events such as the Release Queues and the first Cube Drafts, molded into events that provide a much worse payout to players. It took a "...catalyzing event..." as John Ashcroft would put it, to get rid of the Scourge of WotC's profits, the Daily Events.

They adverted a boycott by getting rid of the most popular events. We will not have the wool pulled over our eyes.

    Thoughts?

Ghostly Flicker, in my opinion, isn't THAT good. Sure, you gain blink two Glimmerposts and gain 4 life, or flicker two Mulldrifters for a full grip of cards, but it's very situational.
I understand the Mnemonic Wall / Ghostly Flicker "lock", but I don't think it's worth it.
However, the single copy for the occasional Teachings is great.

It is situational, but there are a lot of situations is can be used in. It saves lands from LD spells, can gain way more than 4 life, and even as an instant speed Divination targetting Prisms is just fine. It's very awesome.

This green enchantment deck with hexproof everything is not the easiest thing in the world to beat. Any tips for it? Electriky helps, but...

A single Serene Heart in the board (to be cast off Prophetic Prism and tutored for with Teachings) helps a lot and is worth the sideboard slot. It's funny to see a 9/9 Trampler with old Lifelink and Totem Armor turned back into a 1/1 mid combat.

I'm curious how many people here have switched to, or started playing, the mono blue Temporal Fissure version of Cloudpost. Playing U/R, I think all of the wins against it I've managed have come from timing the other player out. That version just seems head and shoulders above U/R Cloudpost, but takes a while to win.

  • posted a message on Do you keep track of your MTGO account "balance."
My first experience on MTGO was that of a chain drafter, thinking that spending money on constructed was a waste given I had a paper collection.

A few years later I learned how playing constructed is a much more fun way to pay for drafts than just going to the store and reloading.

I'm finally making the transition from Pauper/Momir -> add RtR Block -> add standard when Theros comes online, but I'm wondering how many tickets I've spewed off playing two mans, RtR block post DGM, buying singles high, and pulling the trigger on offloading boosters too soon.

Does anyone actively keep track of their tournaments played, packs won and sold, singles to offload, ect? It's not like I have a multi-thousand dollar collection, but I'm wondering if it's worth making a spreadsheet of some sort.

On Wednesday I had the day off, and looked forward to hopping in the 2:30 Momir Basic Daily Event that is always scheduled for that time. I was unable to join the event, as were a lot of others who were talking about it in the chat. The ORC continually answered that there was a problem with the format and no time frame for a fix was available. At this time two man queues were also down.

As of this post, two man queues are back and working fo Momir Basic, but the DEs have not been added back to the scheduled events. Does anyone think there is more to this? Perhaps this is a planned event, in hopes to phase out Momir Basic. This format takes ~10 bucks to build a deck that never rotates, and is a great way to build a collection with minimal investment. I think the powers that be are conspiring to removed Momir for good from the DE menu in an effort to increase that bottom line.

    Thoughts?

Jumping into any given two man queue can almost never be bad etiquette, but is always a bad payout.

Buy about 336 Gatecrash Boosters at ~2.97 tix and sell the when they start to go back up.

Thanks for the replies, interesting stuff all around. I guess my best bet is just picking up momir and grinding basic..

You will need tickets in reserve if you start off with a few rough Daily Events (which could have been used to buy a decent Pauper Deck) but I like the idea of playing Momir only when trying to invest the least amount of money possible at the start.

Thank you for Sharing your list Bane, I believe I played and lost to you at least once in the last week. How good are the Orzhov Charms? I just got BWG together and I'm still trying to feel it out.

I gave up on Jund for now, and bought the cards for the BGW midrange deck. I like it better than Jund so far, but I have not played a Daily. rickster_, what don't you like about it? I'd like to try the WRB deck as well, but the ticket and pack reserves are starting to empty. Is combining the decks into a green based GWBR deck just awful?

    Are these cards playable?

You can't play them in aggro decks as they're too slow. You don't want them against aggro decks since they're too slow.

They're pretty underwhelming in control decks. You don't really want to tap out to play them as they do nothing that turn. They can be fine threats against control decks since there isn't that much instant speed removal. Though you'll need to be doing more than 3 damage a turn to put pressure on a control deck.

That leaves mid range decks. These decks are probably the least punished taking a turn off. There are some decent 5 drops you can play, vraska, assemble the legion, and obzedat. There's a successful junk deck that plays 3 key runes, no 4 drops, and has 4 vraskas and obzedats. Keyrunes aren't particularly good or bad against mid range decks.

I think the problems with keyrunes are 3 fold:
    1) The format has aggro decks that can kill you on turns 4/5. Taking a turn off against them is usually bad.
    2) They aren't really needed for fixing since the lands in this format are pretty good at fixing.
    3) There aren't any good spells to play off 1 mana when you cast them on turn 3. There's no spell snare or path to exile.

So to me it seems like keyrunes are only good in mid range decks when they're playing against control. Which seems like you wouldn't want to main deck them as this match up won't come up as often to make main decking them worth it.

I just built the successful Junk deck that plays 3 keyrunes, so i will see if it sways my opinion on keyrunes. Keyrunes have been just awful for me in control decks.

I enjoyed this post. I am trying to update the Jund deck from single set block. I haven't played it in a few months, and so far the only update has been the Gruul lands. I suppose I need to take it to the tournament practice room again. I'm 2-4 in two Daily Events, with three of the losses coming to Mono Red. Moving Keyrunes to the sideboard or out completely is something I haven't thought of yet, but perhaps that is something I will play with.
