    (2/3) Viability: My belief is that you want the +1 to work on only one permanent, but I think it works on everything, and even if it doesn't it's a very wordy way to say "Untap target permanent".
    (1/3) Balance: The most powerful part about this card may actually be the pseudo-Privileged Position. Untapping one thing is a bit weak compared to other planeswalker options and, while versatile, the tap/untap X is also not very strong compared to something like Sleep. The emblem is also pretty strong at parity but isn't good for comebacks. I guess the hexproof at least has some windows where it wouldn't be active to make it slightly less unfun.


    I guess there is no actual precedent in MTG, but the way it's worded means that each nonland permanent you control gains pseudo-vigilance, which means that when that permanent becomes tapped for the first time your turn, you get to untap it. This is a very open-ended ability that works with multiple things (mana dorks, temple bell-type effects or simply attacking with your creatures) at the cost of Derevi not being able to protect herself in any way in the unfortunate case you don't have creatures on the board/your opponent got more.

    I must say I loved the idea of a "social experiment" Kaervek deck ever since I saw this thread, so much so that I've built my own version of it. It works great and it's an awful lot of fun because of the feuds it creates between players ("Why are you hitting me?" "Because you hit me first!").
    The only thing I tweaked a bit (apart from the decklist because of availability/meta choices) is that I added another rule. After I explain the three rules, I usually say: "There's also another rule, but I'll explain it to you later."
    The 4th rule is: "If you cast a spell with CMC equal or greater than your life total, Kaervek is gonna hit you."
    I mean, there's a reason he's called "The Merciless", right?

    Persist (When this creature dies, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)
    There’s no greater motivation for the troops than a leader who stops at nothing.

    Except that it's not. Lightning Bolt is versatile. This is situational and conditional to boot. I'm not gonna deny that it takes care of a lot of stuff, but you'd never start with this in your main deck, since it's a dead card against lots of matchups (Scapeshift, Kci, Tron, Jund, Jeskai Control), while you'd happily start with 4 bolts in your deck. It's a powerful sideboard card, I'll give it to it, but imho (and just imho), it doesn't deserve its rarity.

    I wouldn't go as far as to say that, but you gotta admit that the sheer quantity of hosers/sideboard cards at rare is definitely higher than in recent sets. On one hand I understand this move, as a core set allows WOTC to print the card they need without worrying about flavor/names, but on the other the fact that someone is gonna open one of these unplayable rares while the guy next to him opens some bomb rare is gonna lead to a lot of feel-bad moments.
    And while I agree with Havrekjex that not all sideboard cards should be uncommons, one could say that there are anyways tons of uncommons that don't see play in limited (the first that springs to my mind is Blazing Hope), so I don't see the problem in the downshift of one or maybe two of these sb-rares, as this would also allow more players to get their hands on them. I mean, by that logic, why wasn't Damping Sphere printed as a rare? It hoses two decks (storm and tron), which is very akin to Amulet of Safekeeping (storm/token hoser), yet the latter is a rare.

    @13055: I admit I did not read the recent articles, but now that I know that, it makes this even sadder. If WOTC wants this set to be opened as much as the others, just make it a good one that experienced players would like to draft, like Origins, for example. Or maybe put in some money reprints (which is what they did to a certain extent here). But them saying that most new players will look mostly at commons/uncommons is flat out bad. While what they say is true to a certain extent, you cannot deny that many of us were left mouth agape when we opened some bomby rare: that's one of the best feelings you can give to a new player. I still remember opening a Terra Stomper and feeling on top of the world.

    I do agree that such a niche card should've been an uncommon, I definitely wouldn't see this warping limited because there's basically nothing substantial you could kill there, and therefore you wouldn't start with this in your main.

    This is shaping up to be a hilarious deck.


    You forgot Dusk/Dawn, which is gonna be a powerhouse in this deck.
    Unconventional anthems like Spidersilk Armor, Hold the Gates, Angelic Shield, Parapet, Leyline of Vitality, Lumithread Field and Castle/Builder's Blessing are basically straight upgrades over other "normal" anthems.
    Also, for extreme spiciness, effects like Tower Defense or Solidarity are basically instant-speed +5/+5 to the team!
    For the longest time I tried to brew a defenders deck (using Kynaios and Tiro because Vent Sentinel), now I can't wait to brew with Arcades dot dot dot

    Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, target creature gains indestructible until end of turn.
    Knowledge of the battlegrounds gave the Knights of the Reliquary the upper hand against the invaders.

    My reasoning behind the black of that ability (which, as you already said is used primarily on green cards) is because I think black in MTG could make use of this ability but flavoring it in a more devious way, while green could depict this ability as an instinctual attack or something. This could open some gameplay possibilities for black to mess with combat while not specifically restricting itself to removal or -x/-x effects. The card was also designed with a multiplayer environment in mind, in fact the first two abilities can be used politically as they aren't limited to creatures you control.
