Jun 17, 2017TheMartianGeek posted a message on Treasure Cruisin' with Norin's SistersI actually have a deck very similar to this, at least in terms of being a RW deck that uses copious small, cheap creatures to gain a lot of ETB triggers. Mine focuses less on the lifegain, though. (I have nothing against lifegain, but it wasn't really the point of that particular deck.) I don't have Norin or Purphoros (though I want to get both eventually) nor much in the way of good dual lands, but I do have Impact Tremors, Mentor of the Meek, Massive Raid, Cloudgoat Ranger, Outpost Siege, Cathars' Crusade, Hellrider, Anointed Procession, Twilight Drover, and I did include Burn at the Stake as well. I doubt it's competitive for Modern, but I only ever play casual anyway. Other cards I've considered for it or a similar deck include Auriok Champion, Call for Unity, Eerie Interlude, Elemental Mastery, Foundry Champion, In the Web of War, Jinxed Idol, Path of Bravery, Saltskitter, Springjack Shepherd, and Thraben Doomsayer.Posted in: Articles

Also, does the inclusion of Lightning Helix make Lightning Bolt (and Lava Spike) unlikely now?
Yeah, I know, but they're also including other iconic cards, including creatures that are none of those (such as Primeval Titan), so I can dream. And Archangel of Thune is an angel. On that note, getting a proper reprint of Avacyn, Angel of Hope would be great, as well as Sigarda's first card. Khalni Hydra as well, and Kalonian (though at least that showed up in C16). And I agree with the person who mentioned Balefire Dragon. I'd like Furyborn Hellkite and Thunderbreak Regent as well for dragons, but given that those are only about $2 each, it's not a huge priority.
Also Rings of Brighthearth. And the Mirrodin swords. And Ancestral Vision. And Archangel of Thune, and Elvish Piper, and maybe the legendary Eldrazi...
- Vanquisher's Banner seems great for any of the C17 decks. Or any tribal deck, really, though it's a bit high on the mana cost.
- Arcane Adaptation looks like it would have a lot of combo potential. Seems hilarious with Spawnsire of Ulamog in particular.
- How the heck is Rowdy Crew mythic-worthy? If the discard weren't random, maybe it would be....
- I'm not thrilled about sirens returning, to be honest. Never liked those things.
- I thought that mechanic looked like "Enrage". People were saying that the word was "Tough", but...nope.
- Carnage Tyrant is great and I want 20 of them. That handily beats out Plated Crusher and probably Terra Stomper too.
- I like the idea behind Shapers' Sanctuary, though I wish it said "permanent" instead of "creature".
- I'm guessing this Angrath guy (who seems to be full of anger and wrath) will get a planeswalker card in RIX. Though I still have no idea who the other planeswalker is.
- Sunbird's Invocation is cool, though its mana cost is kind of painful. It also really needs to be in a deck that can ensure that it gets to do its thing. Didn't Mark Rosewater say that this effect can now be done in red?
- Gishath is potentially very powerful, though expensive to cast and very linear. Still, though, might be a nice build-around card or commander.
- Unclaimed Territory is okay in tribal decks, but I would have rather had a Cavern of Souls reprint (at rare, not mythic).
- Kind of wish Spell Swindle were a variant of Negate or Turn Aside rather than Cancel, but could be useful.
- Regisaur Alpha seems decent, though it's a pity I can't put it in my Selesnya deck (hopefully, it's not the only thing that creates 3/3 dinosaur tokens).
- Oh look, another white mythic boardwipe. Can Wizards come up with any big, flashy white cards that aren't boardwipes these days? For that matter, what the crap is with all the boardwipes lately anyway? I guess it makes sense flavorfully in Hour of Devastation, but holy mother of Ugin, that's six of the stupid things in two sets.
- Dang, they have a repeatable Traumatize now? That seems like it should cost more to cast. I don't like milling as a mechanic, but I did make one mill deck, and that would fit right in. Between it and Fraying Sanity, I wonder if they're bringing back more mill stuff?
- The transforming treasure cards seem interesting.
- Okay, the Ixalan merfolk look possibly even weirder than the Zendikar ones, but I guess they do look kind of cool. Tishana's Wayfinder is a good example.
- Why is Sleek Schooner an uncommon exactly?
- I'm kind of lukewarm on explore so far. I guess it makes sense flavorfully, but I feel like I'd have to play with it a bit.
- Teferi's Protection (good multipurpose protective spell)
- Kindred Discovery (I don't have many tribal decks, but this seems like it would draw you a lot of cards in the right deck...or you could use Arcane Adaptation)
- Kindred Charge (same as above)
- Kindred Summons (same as above)
- Mirari's Wake (good reprint; hopefully it will be cheaper than it was)
- Door of Destinies (a very welcome reprint for tribal decks)
- The Ur-Dragon (maybe it's my Timmy side, but this is just freaking cool)
- O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami (also pretty cool, with great artwork to boot)
- Ramos, Dragon Engine (another cool card, and should be good with proliferate)
- Scalelord Reckoner (5 for a 4/4 flying isn't bad, and it discourages kill spells)
- Scourge of Valkas (nice reprint, and I currently only have one of them for my dragon deck)
- Utvara Hellkite (same as above, and this is honestly playable even if I don't have any other dragons)
- Sunscorch Regent (another nice creature that keeps getting bigger and benefitting you...assuming I don't already have enough of them, since it is a reprint)
- Lightning Greaves (useful for protecting things; I still don't have any even after all the reprints because its price keeps staying up)
- Well of Lost Dreams (another very welcome reprint)
Other than that, there are a decent number of the cats that I could probably use (I already wanted to make a cat deck long before Commander 2017 was shown) and several cards that would be nice to have with an updated frame and/or rules text, and Magus of the Mind, Izzet Chemister, and Traverse the Outlands could be interesting.
Deflecting Palm would be nice, too. And Boros Charm.
And in the category of "not actually expensive enough to need a reprint but would still be nice to see more", Hunter's Insight, Ethereal Armor, Invisible Stalker, Reverberate (or Twincast), Sunscorch Regent, and maybe Warriors' Lesson, Mercurial Chemister, Infiltration Lens, Simic Charm, and Canopy Cover as well. Maybe also some of the big Eldrazi that haven't gotten one, such as Pathrazer of Ulamog.
Oh, and Serra Ascendant needs a reprint. It's too expensive as it is.
I would also agree with this. That includes cards with white borders. The Urza's lands come to mind.
Doubling Season desperately needs a reprint. Yes, I know it won't show up in Standard, and I know it already got one in the first Modern Masters, but that wasn't enough. It should get reprinted in Masters sets and such until it's actually affordable.
Rings of Brighthearth really ought to have one as well. It was a unique and neat card, and I have yet to hear of it breaking anything.
Pretty much all the rare dual lands could always use more reprints. The filtering ones from Shadowmoor/Eventide come to mind, and the enemy-colored half-cycle from Innistrad.
Primeval Titan would be nice, considering its price even after two core sets and a Masters set. I also really hope Sigarda, Host of Herons shows up in Iconic Masters, as well as Avacyn, Angel of Hope. Come on, Avacyn is pretty much the most iconic angel in the game (aside from maybe Akroma?); how could they not include her? And while we're on the subject of angels, Archangel of Thune really should have gotten a reprint by now as well. Khalni Hydra would be another good one for Iconic Masters, and maybe Utvara Hellkite as well. (Actually, I can think of quite a few dragons and hydras that I hope show up in that set...) Lava Spike would be another good one. And I still want to see Gilder Bairn get reprinted, even though it's unlikely.
Thrun, the Last Troll would be nice (and he's kind of an important character). So would any of Elspeth's cards. And the Mirrodin swords are still stupid expensive, so I certainly wouldn't say no to them showing up again. I wish they'd reprint Privileged Position too, though it might be too much of a color bend now (because mono-white doesn't normally get hexproof). Maybe Asceticism instead? I'm also not sure why Time Warp hasn't gotten a reprint in a supplementary set yet, nor Time Stretch. Other things that would be nice to have the price drop on are Rhys the Redeemed, Quicksilver Amulet, Aether Vial, Mox Opal, Ancestral Vision, Master Transmuter (that hasn't made it into a Masters set yet?!), Through the Breach, and Lighthouse Chronologist. Maybe Bear Umbra, Reflecting Pool, Darksteel Plate, Lightning Greaves, Elvish Piper, Training Grounds, Well of Lost Dreams, Nature's Will, Waves of Aggression (or Aggravated Assault if it isn't too overpowered), Lotus Bloom, Luminarch Ascension, Copy Enchantment, Darksteel Colossus, Primeval Bounty, and Contagion Engine too.
For things that really aren't that expensive but would be nice to see again anyway, Distortion Strike, Slippery Bogle, Invisible Stalker, Dramatic Entrance, Firemane Avenger, Gideon's Avenger, Browbeat, Primal Rage (how that hasn't shown up in anything newer than 10th Edition is beyond me), Thunderbreak Regent, Avatar of the Resolute, Elite Arcanist, Sage of Hours, and Sylvan Caryatid (kind of surprised that hasn't been in a Commander set yet...) would be nice. I'd also like to see more of the imprinting artifacts get reprints.
Finally, even though it's only been a couple sets since they came out, I feel like either Heroic Intervention or Blossoming Defense, or both, would make sense in a core set or something.
I feel much the same way. I've always hated the apocalyptic sets, and at least some of the others like Eldritch Moon and New Phyrexia had a few good and interesting cards. Hour of Devastation doesn't even have that going for it. I've been telling myself that I just need to tolerate it until July 14, and then, with the possible exception of a couple cards that might be worth using (the horse, for one), I hopefully don't even have to concern myself with this stupid set again, and I can start focusing on better things like Commander 2017 and Ixalan, as well as maybe reading the story again.
