Since i'very started building a deck for standard I looked up how the new rotation system works so I know when Dragon's of Tarkir and Origins rotate out. Does anyone know when "Q4 2016" occur? I've looked around Google for the exact date this occurs on and could'my find it. Does anyone know what it is? (Please excuse my ignorance here)

So say i'm playing EDH and my friend pulls out Progenitus but I Rogue's Passage Ashling, The Extinguisher and deal damage, could I choose Progenitus to be sacrificed?

    (1) "Destroy" effects are not damage. Damage-prevention doesn't matter. Destroy is destroy, and damage is damage. (Note that Fog only works for combat damage anyway.)

Tail Slash and deathtouch works just dandy.

    (2) The two creatures you indicated do not have activated abilities. Thrax has two triggers and Grimblade has a static ability. An activated ability is written as "Cost: Effect".

First, I keep getting told effects that say "Destroy" count as damage by one of my friends, the one that didn't know how the Tail Slash, deathtouch combo worked.

So, this would dictate that fog would negate that effect, however, I argue it is not damage as it simply "Destroyed" rather than dealt lethal, as effects that would say destroy do not destroy indestructible creatures, however they can still be damaged.
So does it count as damage or not is what i'm asking in short.
Lethal marked damage (including any amount from a source with deathtouch) causes a creature to be destroyed. Indestructible makes a creature ignore this rule: yes it can still be damaged, but that won't kill it.

While damage causes destruction, effects that say 'destroy' just destroy directly, they don't use damage. Damage comes only from attacking and blocking creatures in the combat phase, and from spells and abilities that use the actual word 'damage'.

Thank you both for your time and info

So I would like to know two things

First, I keep getting told effects that say "Destroy" count as damage by one of my friends, the one that didn't know how the Tail Slash, deathtouch combo worked.

So, this would dictate that fog would negate that effect, however, I argue it is not damage as it simply "Destroyed" rather than dealt lethal, as effects that would say destroy do not destroy indestructible creatures, however they can still be damaged.
So does it count as damage or not is what i'm asking in short.

Next would be Havengul Lich's ability where he gains an "activated" ability. So for my modern deck, I was wondering if I could resurrect Thraximundar or Grixis Grimblade and allow him to become a 5/5 deathtoucher or something that buffs itself upon swinging. Or would these be state based abilities so he would not gain them?

I do not wish to cheat in modern so if these things could be cleared up I would be very grateful.

Thank you both, I will make sure to tell him this

And with that, Tail Slash is back in my side board

One of my friends told me a creature with deathtouch must deal combat damage to be able to kill another creature

So by this logic, I could not use a Diregraf Captain to Tail Slash another creature, effectively killing it without swinging

Is any of this true? Or is he just a bit foggy as he was with the Indestructible rulings?

What I got for winning a modern tourney at work Smile Deck was pre-constructed before being awarded however it also included other cards. Not sure what to make of it since this is the first time I'm using Zombies. Any suggestions on what to include and remove based on the current deck and included cards?

    Other included cards were:

Dash Hopes is a really bad card. It will never do what you want it to do.

I would like to argue that Dash Hopes IS a good card. If you read the flavor text you'd know that it's not for countering spells, it's to bait your opponents into letting you sap their life. A few times it's actually won me games or at least gotten me close to winning.

I would like to clarify I was not talking about Progenitus. I just thought i'd mention him since he has protection from everything
I was complaining about protection enchants in multiplayer mainly, being that it can tip the scales if it's a 3 player game and 2 are going up against a single person.

And I have followed what everybody has told me to do and did a little reworking my deck, giving it more burn with Bathe in Dragonfire and Impact Tremors along with the Sudden Spoiling I was talking about whilst shoving in a Grave Titan to combo off a little better with Endless Ranks of The Dead which helps the Impact tremors do lots of damage quickly

Hoping to see if this improves things tomorrow

    (EDIT)

Sorry I took so long to answer, school has been taking up my time recently

Go ahead and tell me i'm just angry. I know I am and it's for a good reason.

I recently played against a deck that essentially made a Heroic creature become a 20/20 with double strike and protection from a color and creatures. Needless to say it essentially put the game on lockdown and there was no way for me to win. I think this means it makes cards VASTLY overpowered.

Now again, before you call me out, I considered the fact that "Hey something might not be so bad about the rulings." This holds true for creatures such as Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts as she has protection from creatures but could be interacted with removal pretty darn easily looking at her P/T and other things.

Phyrexian Crusader is also a fairly balanced one. He has protection from Red and White but is a piddly little 2/2. Meaning that if you just run 3 colors you can deal with him.

You can even look at Dark Ascension's Faith's Shield which is extremely cheap in mana cost but doesn't last for more than a turn EVEN IF the Fateful Hour ability is activated with which you may not even survive if your opponent can do passive damage, balancing itself out.

However, there's things like Progenitus and the creature that he pulled out. Not only is this very dangerous in a multiplayer game as one could disable you whilst the other works on bringing Progenitus or a protection creature out, those become unblockable, undamageable, uninteractable, and all around unfair obstacles. You're telling me I can't even buff up my creature to block it and survive? That's BS and you know it. It ends in the player with protection abilities ultimately winning unless they had no idea about heroic or deck building in general.

A short rant about Progenitus's balancing is it is unjustifiable no matter how you look at it. If you get all 10 mana lined up which is very doable with Thawing Glaciers and dual lands you get a 20/20, twice the power for what you paid for, with protection from almost, literally, ANYTHING. Meaning you'd need certain cards like Sudden Spoiling or a counterspell on hand which not all decks even have in them, or a boardwipe which are often times very detrimental to both sides and end up prolonging the game in some cases.

So I thought something reasonable could be done with protection that one of my friends agreed would work as well:Protection does not make things unblockable but it does prevent all the damage done and prevents targeting, etc. This means you don't need colorless Eldrazi's to avoid color protection and it even increases the interaction between creatures in the game without breaking anything!

Do you think there are some cards that just need to be banned until their mechanics are reworked? Do you still think i'm wrong about the imbalance with the protection rulings? Please do tell.
