Oh! I wanna guess first! By "overlapping" sideboard I bet he means it is more important to have cards that help matchups a bit but can be used against several decks than to focus on absolute hosers that provide larger helps but only with one or two matchups.

Honestly, I thought this was common sense. When going into a meta that's broad, you either adjust your deck to hit more decks and/or you adjust your sideboard.

    Edit:

To clarify by what I mean.

If you build a narrow, hyper focused deck with the top cards for your strategy, then you have no room to complain when a lower tier broad strategy deck you didn't plan for plows over your deck.

Build a "broad spectrum" deck and you risk getting plowed over by a narrow deck design that manages to punch through your deck.

This is the biggest appeal for Magic.

Buy them for the play value, not the investment value.

If you buy for the play value, you will play the cards and enjoy them without stressing over whether the card loses or gains 20% of it's value from week to week.

If you buy for the investment, you'll stress as the card rises and dips. You won't enjoy playing them as you'll be worried about damaging its monetary value.

Asking us and the title is a pretty good hint you're interested in Investment, not Play. So.... I'm jaded since I have Sea and Volcanic, so my vote would go towards Gaea.

With a strict eye towards investment (not play), I would go with classic Duals.

New (old?) advertisement that seems to target iOS redirects you to 96.44.133.34. Free Wal-Mart gift card nonsense. Locks up Chrome and makes it difficult to exit out of Safari. Apple has to have a ****** way of black listing sites only under the "block adult content" option. Wouldn't normally be a problem unless a thread uses the word "tokens" or "Dick" (as in Richard), then Apple is kind enough to block me from the thread. Forcing me to disable the filters, which opens me up to the damn advertising. Hilarious Rolleyes

Whatever advert is doing it, it hits a lot. At its peak it hits somewhere between every third to fifth page. Then it subsides for a while, then it goes crazy for a while. At its worse, I really thought I had a virus. So I started browsing the forums in Chrome and everything else in Safari. The problem went away in Safari but persisted in Chrome. With the filters in place, it just gets an error and I can navigate back but it's nuisance.

I don't understand this. I'm probably missing something.

If they're going to get rid of the PW redirection rule, why don't they just get rid of it? Why do they need to errata anything?

Or are they getting rid of the rule and wanting to errata every card that could previously redirect damage to a PW, so that it can still damage a PW? If so, why not just keep the rule since it's the same end result?

    Can someone explain this better?

The theme of planeswalkers is that they are players. You attack them like players, and once a turn they cast a spell (loyalty ability) like a player. So thematically, a Lava Axe and Lightning Bolt should be able to deal them damage as if they are players. There's just one catch: Neither of those spells can actually target a planeswalker! In Axe's case only players are legal targets, and in bolt's case only creatures and players are legal targets. So how can I get around this? The current rules are the planeswalker redirection rule. If I bolt the the controller of the planeswalker I can, as it resolves, then redirect the damage to the planeswalker. So if this rule goes away, players wouldn't be able to use most burn spells on planeswalkers. When you say "bolt your Jace" you're actually proposing a shortcut for "Cast lightning bolt, targeting you, with the expressed intention to have the damage redirected to your Jace, Cunning Castaway." I mean, that's a mouthful so no one really does it except for the most competitive of environments when you don't want to reveal anything ever.
So in summery: If you ditch the redirection rule, you won't be able to burn planeswalkers with old cards unless you errata them.

I suppose this is another instance where flavour can cause issues with gameplay. I guess they figured that the unique rules regarding planeswalkers were adding needless complexity to the game, so they're revising/removing them to improve the card type.
Exactly. We all know how it's supposed to work, and we've been playing that way anyways since they were created even though technically we were doing it wrong. It's a good rule change but it will come with a truck of errata.
Pretty much, it's only a matter of time before they make cards that interact with Emblems. Keep messing with good things wizards...

How are Emblems a good thing? If Players are Planeswalkers then why can't Players interact with Emblems from Planeswalkers in the same manner that Players can interact with spells from Players? Yes, I know the argument that you can just pop off a PW before the ultimate, but that really isn't the point. The point is, WotC calls these cards Planeswalkers but the interaction is nowhere the same as it is with Players, who just happen to also be Planeswalkers.

The whole thing is just a mess.

It might be off topic so a new post would be prudent. As such I don't know if it's against the rules per se. Discord is not like a forum, so I fail to see how it competes.

That said, I use Discord and I have had to disable the notifications at certain times because I get flooded with notifications and I haven't had time to see if there are filters. I use it to coordinate meet ups for some games. I don't like how some people use it like AOL chat, I don't have time for that anymore.

    Except doesn't 702.121b state:

A creature “crews a Vehicle” when it’s tapped to pay the cost to activate a Vehicle’s crew ability.

A creature that remains untapped because you elected to Tap 0 is not crewing a vehicle, hence the cost has not been paid.

The cost isn't just the number of creatures tapped. It's the number of untapped creatures tapped[ whose total power is greater or equal to X as specified on the Vehicle card.

In other words, tapping 0 creatures also causes the total power to also be 0 which don't meet the cost.

It means to drop an bunch of little creatures/tokens onto the field then pump all of them up. Mirror Entity is the "pump" portion of this by making your tiny creatures much bigger.

I'm not sure where the phrase actually comes from.

I honestly can't think of any specific strategy/cards off the top of my head that's relavent at the moment. I'm feeling a little blah today.

  • posted a message on New Magic Logo -- Effective starting in Dominaria 2018
    Quote from Werewolf_Rawr »
Honestly, I hadn't read the article before commenting on this change in my earlier post. Now that I have read the article, I find this change even more troubling.

This change isn't about the logo. It's about the direction of the brand and the product that will follow. THAT is what scares me.

    From the article:
a gap opened between what is true about the brand and what is represented on its "banner"—the brand logo. Last year we felt that gap widening, so we set out to close it, committing ourselves to designing a new logo that respects our rich history while amplifying the qualities that make the brand strong going forward...

In what way at all, does this new logo respect the rich history? There is absolutely nothing indicative of the history here. The text is the NEW font, the Planeswalker symbol is now the focus and that is NEW, the chrome color identify represents something NEW. They even left the oversized "M" out of the design. The only things this logo has in common with the original identity are the characters that spell out Magic the Gathering.

...1993, the brand and its banner were very much in sync. Magic began as a card game with eclectic, traditional fantasy visuals and a hand-drawn logo to match.

This leads me to believe that eclectic, traditional fantasy is no longer part of the worlds they want to build...that saddens me because THAT is what separates this game from the competitors.

...In 1999, the logo had its first update: a tighter and more vibrant version of the high-fantasy original.

The design, still recognizable, goes through a color change and a slight update to the border of the text. Still aiming for a careful continuation of the brand identity

...It was solidifying new and ownable brand territory— building up the mystique of its enduring characters and worlds, all delivered with world-class art and a modern fantasy aesthetic. In 2015, the logo was refreshed again, this time to reflect an evolved visual fit and finish, and to adopt a new brand element that signals excitement and power: the color "Mythic Orange."

Evolution was still achieved even while shifting to a modern fantasy aesthetic...there is still some semblance of the brand's roots here despite many, many changes to the game.

In a number of ways, it didn't zero in close enough to the brand's modern fantasy core. Magic's visuals draw inspiration from many cultures and wonders from our world, as well as from wild imagination, reaching well beyond the medieval high-fantasy aesthetic from which the original logo was drawn. Additionally, Magic was centering itself around ownable features like Planeswalkers and high-concept worlds—the building blocks of a brand that can see itself not only as a game, but as an entertainment property.

Every iteration of the brand logo for the last 25 years has kept ties to it's heritage...until now.

Here is where they lose me because they seem to be describing the fact that they have lost themselves. They've ditched their core identity in an attempt to appeal to more cultures and more products rather than focusing on the game itself. I believe they are in danger of spreading themselves too thin and thus losing their ability to appeal to enfranchised players while not having enough of a unique characteristics to standout to new players.

This isn't about the logo for the sake of a logo, just as the article explains - it's about their direction as a brand. The logo does it's job perfectly. However, what it represents is not a move in a positive direction in my opinion. They have forsaken their heritage and frankly, that's really what this game has going for it more than anything. I believe that is why the return to Dominaria is so exciting for people.

Try taking it a step further. What's on every single box of Magic regardless of the language?

Now if you look at the new logo, how does that apply?

Try Googling McDonald's in say... Russia. China. Japan. UAE is interesting.
How about FedEx? I didn't even know they had a logo until I saw it written out in a different language.
Coca-Cola has some very interesting ones. I guess the red can or bottle itself is the logo?

Up until I read your post, I think Magic: the gathering was the brand. Just like Google is the brand regardless of the country. But now, I think Hasbro wants to localize the brand. So it's not Magic the Gathering but the Planeswalker symbol and... whatever language MtG translates to.

To compensate I'd look to put this into a 2 of in maybe turbo smog. (I'll do a thread if you need assistance.) Or just in a control shell that wants to put out an early dreams or two then use nythos and damn pack.

Yeah, I played this card waaaay back in the day and the clock is super slow. Worst case scenario is... well... it goes without explaining.

    Quote from Budlife »
What do you guys do with old card sleeves? Do you save them and give them to kids? Clean them and use them for some type of life hack? Or just throw them away?

I feel bad that I keep throwing mine away cause I change my sleeves every month but they’re really not that bad of condition. I’m just OCD compared to other people.

The material is usually polypropylene (PP) on the cheaper sleeves, not sure what it is on the the more expensive sleeves, I never asked any of the manufacturers specifically about their higher lines. I would wonder about the foiled ones. Anyways, The material is 100% recyclable (except foils?) so just toss them in your recycle bin. Or better yet, put them in the bag your new sleeves came in and toss it all together so they don't fly all over the place when the truck tips the can over. I speak from experience.

I should note that some districts will refuse to recycle plastics without the chasing arrows. In addition PP generally has very low recovery, less than 5% I believe. Though that is a problem of the industry as a whole and not the plastic itself. Nothing you can do about it.

Definitely do not give them to kids. If you don't want them because they've, "gone bad," even if they're only slightly used, you risk setting the kids up for a sucky experience. It would be better just to buy them new sleeves. This is my personal preference though.

As an aside, Please don't use them for shipping. Unused spares, fine. But used sleeves? No. I ocassionally get shipments in obviously worn sleeves and one had a small bit of grit inside the sleeve. Damaged a NM $5 card. So don't do it.

Initially you didn't ask the same question, but the discussion definitely went in that direction due to your aversion at any sort of markup from the seller (with you as the buyer/trader) as indicated in post #10 in that thread.

In this thread, you are, again, trying to avoid any sort of markup (reasonable or otherwise) on cards while still retaining the benefits that that markup grants you. I don't fault you for it though. The reality of your search isn't quite so black and white however, but I won't bother echoing anything that has already been pointed out. You turned them all down anyways.

I never mentioned anything about linking to any stores themselves, only that which has been mentioned. Stores/platforms mentioned here is the list from this thread:
    CardKingdom
    TCGPlayer
    eBay
    Facebook
    MOTL
    Deckbox
    PucaTrade
    CardSphere

Here is the list from that thread:
    eBay
    TCGPlayer
    Facebook
    Troll & Toad
    Channel Fireball
    Starcity Games

Two different questions, as you put it, resulted in, IMHO, not too dissimilar lists. More to the point, these stores are so well known that any MtG collector of reasonable caliber will know them.

It appears that nothing will satisfy your requirement. To that end, I can only suggest you create your own trading site that meets everything you desire...

The business hosting it could, sure, but definitely not the traders. The people who use it are completely independent of those who own the platform, the owners could make money in any number of ways through advertising, subscriptions, deck building features, marketing data, etc, there's more sophisticated sites already in existence, it's simply a matter of if anyone on this particular website makes the connection to bring it up.

You asked the same(?) question previously.

You seem to imply that we're not understanding your question, yet you keep getting very similar answers. I'm not sure how else to explain it. A "platform" at the size and volume and doing the kind of thing that you desire isn't going to fly under the radar of too many MtG people for any length of time, ergo, it would've been mentioned here already.
