I don't understand this position. These new toys take ABSOLUTELY NOTHING away from existing players. Fun and enjoyment is not a zero-sum game.
This likely did take away products they would otherwise enjoy though, like Planechase or other products, so that may not be necessarily true. I would much rather see parts of the game that haven't been explored, not other franchises I can explore as much as I want outside of the game, from all of it or none at all. If I wanted to play a LotR card game I would have played either of them or go off and play the MMO (Lord of the Rings Online) and there is plenty to digest about 40k, but I choose not to.
This adds something new and nice for crossover fans and fans of the other IPs, attracting new blood to the game (which is an objectively good thing).
Are there fans of strictly crossovers? Like they don't like the two IPs separately but putting together? They enjoy crossovers in general? Also, I don't think this will bring in that much new blood, likely new cash, but not new players when looking at this that would buy less of this product.
As to the comments you're referencing: they're not wrong. Magic's story/universe is absolute garbage compared to the IPs we'll soon be dipping into.
How much of the story do you know? Are you talking recently or throughout Magic's history?
Additionally, the mythos that Magic -does- have is that multiple universes exist and the player/planeswalkers pull creatures and spells through time and space to use them to do battle. Dipping into other IPs is 100% unequivocally exactly what Magic is already about, and arguments to the contrary are disingenuous and misinformed at best.
Well that's incredibly wrong. Mages are not summoning Steven Universe or the Red Ranger from ever Power Rangers season they are summoning beasts/spells from what they know, usually from things they met. Kamahl summoning fire cats during Odyssey block is because he's seen them in some capacity or knows the spell to do so, but he's not calling forth Herby the car or a Shoyru Neopet. They summon within the Magic universe or just their world, this isn't Rick & Morty or every other franchise that just has to have a multiverse right now.

Its a freaking card game. People been making 'Fake Cards' of like Superman and Wolverine and Batman for like ..years..HELL , INQUEST MAGAZINE did it themselves back in the day ..they had fake cards printed up in the back of the Magazine for years!! You can search them up and everything.
People have also been making incredibly overpowered fake cards too, so what's your point? You admit they were fake and therefore couldn't be played with in a tournament setting (which these will be) isn't really a point in "WotC should do it" argument.
OH no ..they are making cards with other things on them. Oh well. Be the consumers you know you are if you don't like them ..and not buy them. And if you're playing against them in Commander? Freaking make better decks! Make decks that they don't wanna play against either! Or HECK have some common sense and communicate!
So your argument is if you don't like them playing with them you should play incredibly degenerate decks that win in two turns and make it unfun for everyone?.....What?

Because there's a lot more wet floor signs on this slope than there was a year ago. First we had The Walking Dead Secret Lair and suddenly we go from that to a core set featuring D&D (I find this somewhat acceptable, though I do not like it), then another entire set (LotR) and a Commander Deck series (40k). Usually slippery slope arguments are bad, but this is literally that very thing happening.
Even the stance of "They did X and I'm afraid they will do Y" is asinine. In a few years after we see how these pan out vs normal magic then if the thought is supported fear that Y will occur is reasonable. But its sheer madness to fear something that they said they aren't going to do when there is no evidence to support the thought that they will do it despite their statement.
Ummm....they never said "we won't do it" and even if they did we are currently seeing them do it right now.
They literally did X (make a crossover of TWD) and I'm afraid they will do Y (more crossovers) is literally happening in front of us. In this case there is a very real slippery slope and we have ignored the "wet floor" signs and slipped down it.

Being inspired by something does not make a product a crossover. Hot Fuzz isn't a crossover because it was inspired by action movie cliches. D&D isn't a crossover because it was inspired by Lord of the Rings. Magic being inspired by people that played D&D makes it about as much of a crossover as I am a shoe.

It's good that they are interested in it, but I do have to wonder how long they will stick around once their favorite IP is no longer in the game. Not a fan of pooping on lore like this, it makes the art a joke in a bad way.
I'm trying to understand how a dog is "My Little Pony" in any way? What's pathetic about this? What lore is this ruining? Do you think normal dogs don't exist in any Magic world? You made similar statements before and yet offer no explanation past thinking about MLP, a lot.
By chance, did you think Grizzly Bears was pathetic too? Watch out! It's a realistic animal next to dragons, angels, elves, goblins, and Beebles.
The original commenter seems to be completely unaware of how silly Phil and Kaja Foglio's work have been in the past, or the existence of cards like Sensation Gorger. I was going to mention Beebles too, but I see you've captured (sic.) those. There have always been a few silly things in the game. I think it's a combination of the MLP (his words, not ours) sense and the large male crotch in the artwork, and his or her reaction to those things that is making them uncomfortable.
I think it's so weird to get so upset about dogs having a presence in Magic while not complaining about other normal creatures being in the game, like cats, boars, bears, horses, wolves, gorillas, and birds.
I can admit a couple of the dog's arts are a bit too goofy, but in no way are the arts or them being the dog type ruining the game in any way. It's quite alright to have some lighthearted art now and again. I'd much rather have that than crappy CG art like Grasp of the Hieromancer. -

In German, the card is translated to Mühlstein. The building where the grain is ground, the mill, is indeed "die Mühle." However, the grinding itself, the millng, is not "das Mühlen" but instead "das Mahlen" (in contrast to "das Malen", which is the drawing/painting of pictures), so i expect "mahlen" to be the German expression.

At prices north of $165, would it REALLY have been too much to at least get 2 sweet basics paired with each fetch of the type they could search for?
They made the effort to do each one by a different artist, and each one on a different recognizable plane, so they should have expanded upon that with each pair of basics, IE Seb does a sweet Ixilan Forest and Island.

it does not solve the "non-start" hands.
if you mull down to 5 and draw a 1 land/4 spell hand scrying 2 instead of 1 it will not help your game (more so if you see 2 non land cards that you put to bottom), the real problem with "non playable" hands is that the more you mulligan the less is the chance to have a starting hand.
this method lessen this problem by giving you the same land/spell ratio in each mulligan BUT then you have to sacrifice some cards that you can chose. at this point you can start playing but with the classic disadvantage of having less resources
Yep, the London Mulligan gives players far more agency to pick and choose the progressively smaller starting hand after each mulligan, while still strongly restricting their raw resources the more mulligans they take.
Terrible starting hands that cycle into worse and worse hands when mulliganing precisely when you are correctly mulliganing is a real problem. One of the major issues Magic has due to land cards taking up space within the library. That fundamental mechanic--protestations to the contrary by people like MaRo attempting to justify it notwithstanding--dramatically increases the luck-based effects of variance at quite the expense to skill.
Yes, good players can mitigate a bad starting hand with skillful use of the smaller number of resources they start with.
But there's not a whole lot anyone can do when you enter a mulligan death-spiral out of your control. If you draw a 1 land hand with insufficient low-cost cards to mitigate it, mulligan, then draw a 6-land hand, mulligan, then draw another 1-land hand, you are, in fact, mulliganing correctly, and the situation continues to get worse and worse in a manner out of your control.
The scry mulligan, and even a scry N mulligan does exactly nothing to mitigate this aspect of mulliganing. It still forces players to throw away hands that could have been reasonable had they seen the other N cards up-front. Often because of the lack of even a single additional land. You didn't get to make a properly informed decision. You had to take a luck-based chance that the scry would itself pay off enough. You had to make a choice at a decision point to commit to an opening hand before the "informed" part comes into play. That's not an informed decision; it's just a leap of faith with a little bit of control after the jump. By forcing a commitment before the "informed" aspect of the decision point comes into effect, you're barely mitigating the fundamental issue, to begin with.
Putting a scry-like effect up-front, on the other hand, keeps the same resource restriction (of your starting hand size), while strongly mitigating potential mulligan death-spirals out of your control due to variance. The kind of variance-based death spiral that can easily effectively cause an entirely luck-based auto-loss out of the control of the player at the very start of the game. You get to be informed before committing to a choice at that decision point. That is, imho, the correct order. Get informed first, then commit second. Not commit first, then get informed second.
Moreover, this mulligan is symmetrical in older formats. Yes, combo players get to dig more for combo pieces. Well, opposing players simultaneously get to dig more for answers to combos. So it reduces variance in favor of skill to mulligan to the best starting position on both sides of the table in that regard, as well.
Starting hand land screw or land flood due to variance is easily one of the worst, most frustrating gameplay experiences consistently seen in and complained about within Magic at effectively all levels of play. Yes, pros and plenty of others--especially when understanding the statistics--can just laugh it off most of the time. But many a player have rage or exhaustion quit the game over this very issue.
Some of the statistical breakdowns attempting to defend how healthy the resource distribution is, and how low variance's effects actually are, are simply astonishing to use as an actual defense. When your statistical breakdown to defend the health of the game shows that only 69% of games have a healthy resource distribution, while a whopping 31% have unhealthy resource distributions, that does not a defense make; that is, imho, a profound refutation of the healthy levels of variance in the game. More than one-in-four games played has an unhealthy distribution of resources that cost one player the game!? That is absurdly high. The London mulligan should mitigate such severe levels of variance-screw quite a bit, in healthy ways that push a significantly larger number of games to fall within the healthy resource distribution range.
Suffice it to say, I like this mulligan rule an awful lot. It strongly mitigates one of the worst aspects of Magic's fundamental mechanics. And does so in a way that favors skillful and informed choices made at a critical decision point in the game. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

"Each card you've discarded this turn" is quite relevant. This will not be played to replace your hand, but (if at all) as a refill for madness or other discard-heavy decks.

Sure, it's probably not viable to simply make a 1:1 swap to Jodah or a similar replacement, since you now have to actually run some amount of ramp/color fixing in the deck, but that should be solvable and imo brings back an essential part of deckbuilding that was just circumvented by simply tacking it onto your value engine...
Or, if it's not even complicated or much work, the cEDH people could just create that second list themselves instead of complaining forever?
Why would it be on the RC to create a second banlist for the people that play their decidedly casual format in an unintended way? Don't get me wrong, everyone absolutely can and should play the game the way they like, but if that warps a format so much that the original rules and restrictions don't fit it anymore, that's on you.

Well, we agree on that part...
... on this, not so much.
That is at least worth looking into - especially since it seems weird for an established artist, to suddenly risk his reputation like that...
Anyway, not much wizards could have (reasonably) done to outright prevent this imo and their response seems appropriate
