Feb 11, 2015BladewingX posted a message on Word of Command #5 - Fate Reforged ReviewNice article.Posted in: Articles
Some typos that need fixing:
Top 50 List:
it's Hushwing Gryff not Gyrff
Daghatar:
It's Tariel, Reckoner of Souls not Tariel, the Reckoner
Shu Yun Miscellaneous Synergy
Do you mean Monastery Mentor instead of Monastery Monk?
Some other things I noticed:
On the topic of Alesha:
Why is there a green card mentioned for a WBR commander?
The mass ressurection spells all focus on converted mana cost, where the commander focuses on power. This is a big difference, as she nicely combos with Karmic Guide.
Reveillark has an ability similar to hers.
On Dromoka:
The part about the mirror entity is only somewhat true. Only if none of your creature have any +1/+1 counters when you use the ability does truly every creature gain some. If one already has some, those still add to the P/T of the creature in question, therefore making it have a higher toughness and not gaining any counters.
Notable blue cards Supplant Form:
What do token copies have to do with proliferate? Do you mean populate?
Notable black cards Dark Deal:
Uh what? those two are definitely NOT the cards that come to mind.
The card is pretty much a Shattered Perception except it draws one less, effectively having everyone discard a card. Incendiary Command also has the same ability.
Notable red cards Outpost Siege:
The strong part about the second ability is it being a leaves the battlefield trigger, not a dies trigger. This allows shenanigans with bounce, flicker and similar effects. I've already lost a non-commander game to Saltskitter constantly exiling itself and returning in combination with Jeskai Barricades Bouncing and blocking non-stop while dealing yet more damage. Unsure about how it fares in a Norin the Wary build.
That said, keep the articles coming, always nice to read about the larger picture in commander -

On the RW Aggro deck, do you see a use for Monastery Swiftspear? With 20 burn spells it should go reliably to 2/3, which is great for R.
Speaking of Prowess, Seeker of the Way is nice in a drawn out game thanks to lifelink, but probably not aggressive enough.
Thanks for the article anyways, hope to read more soon -

Well...
I actually /facepalmed, because the idea behind it is genious
might get a little boring though - it's like "Hivemind, Pact, IWIN - or damn, no Hivemind, I lost" -
May 19, 2011BladewingX posted a message on [BG] Flourishing TormentI have to admit, I LOVE the idea behind this. but as Panda said, this seems very very risky, and the deck won't do too good if it doesn't have access to both cards...Posted in: Deck Compilation

May 19, 2011BladewingX posted a message on [Rg] PingersPretty neat idea to have your Pingers untap during each of your opponents turns^^Posted in: Deck Compilation
Have you Considered Jeska, Warrior Adept and Kamahl, Pit Fighter, Jaya Ballard, Task Mage and be it just to add some red legends?^^
Anyways, I looked through a ton of pingers, and even though most were worse than the ones you used, I found some of them fitting in the deck:
Initiate of Blood - Should be rather easy to flip him^^
Grim Lavamancer - Always one of the best pingers, though you might not have enough cards in your gy to burn.
Magus of the Scroll - Looks like a nice way to dump your late-game mana into, while also beeing a 1-drop, of which you seem to have none.
Fallen Ferromancer - yeah, he seems pretty bad at first sight, but you might be able to take out things like regenerators, indestructible creatures and stuff out with it^^
Vithian Stinger - well, he seems like a Prodigal Pyromancer that exchanged its power of 1 for the Unearth ability - not bad if you ask me.
Whipkeeper - depends on your meta. If you play against bigger creatures he might work out, as you only need 3 dmg + his ability for an X/6 creature^^ -
May 19, 2011BladewingX posted a message on [RU] Wheee! Killing with Roo!I actually got that deck myself, I'm going to post it just for comparison:Posted in: Deck Compilation
My best play with it so far was:
T1 - Island, Ponder
T2 - Mountain, Kiln Fiend
T3 - Mountain, Brutal Force, Distortion Strike, Assault Strobe, Attack for 14x2=28 (unblockable)
My opponent didn't even control anything but a few lands and a mana-artifact by then -
May 19, 2011BladewingX posted a message on [BG] Wild MarchSo you have a lot of creatures enter- and leave the battlefield...did you consider Fecundity? Should be quite nice with evoke.Posted in: Deck Compilation
Basically I would prefer Tortured Existence, simply because Undertaker is a creature and therefore
1) has summoning sickness, making it rather bad in late-game
2) is more easily removed than an enchantment.
But that could also be me for having a playgroup with few enchantment-hate but lots of creature-hate^^ -
May 19, 2011BladewingX posted a message on [BUR]Ultimatum HelixAs there aren't any creatures in there - have you considered Decree of Pain?Posted in: Deck Compilation
That aside, I actually read about exactly this deck in a Magazine. I'm just gonna post the Decklist here:
It's rather expensive, but playable. The Innocent Bloods provides some very basic defense against creature-heavy-decks, though they can't really stop them.
Actually I liked that Deck pretty much, but...well, I can't afford Fetchlands/Duals^^ -
Oct 25, 2009BladewingX posted a message on Brokkam Previewlooks nice already, i would love to draft that set.Posted in: Broken Blog
though i do not know how the other cards in the set are going to look like, one thing in those 5 cards i found not that well done: 3 of your 5 cards have the same mana cost (WBR). I like 3-color-cards as well, just make sure not to put the same mana cost over and over again, otherwise it gets boring.
another thing, i'm not totally sure, if those mana bond lands are going to fit in the 3-color-sheme. i mean, paying W for a land that just produces more W seems not that good for a deck that needs all three colors it's playing...
anyways, im looking forward to see the complete set^^

Magma Jet is just an awesome card. Mono R decks love it for the card quality it grants, Izzet control likes anything that filters what it draws. This is probably as close as we will get to Electrolyze in Pauper.
Burning-Tree Emissary is crazy to see in Pauper. The last "free" two-drop we had got banned (Cloud of Faeries, although that enabled some much worse combos)
Magma Jet
That sweet scry 2 can help dodge unnecessary lands in later turns for Burn/Sleigh lists and might also provide some card quality in control lists.
Mortician Beetle
We've seen ppl playing around with Carrion Feeder and Bloodbriar, and this seems like a strong card in some GB sacrifice list.
Burning Tree Emissary Not only is this an incredibly strong and aggressive two-drop, it might also enable some sick combo-oriented plays. Think Unearth, Undying Evil...
Well, I hoped you'd take my criticism as constructive, as it was meant as such. I really like many of those cards, I'm just pointing out what I dislike about some of them. They are YOUR renders, and I thank you for sharing them with us. If I were to proxy some of those cards or use them in some kind of MtG Software (*wink*), I'd definitely consider using some of yours.
And if you don't agree with the problems they have for me, then feel free to not change them. But maybe my comment could inspire you to strive for even better and cleaner looking cards
Your Lake of the Dead says "Black" instead of B.
I LOVE the artwork on those Dark Depths. They look Marit Lage-tentacly, and the darker overall theme fits it nicely. Unfortunately it's a bit wordy, the text is touching the border-shadow on the top and bottom.
Bazaar of Baghdad has the opposite problem, the text is tiny and feels lost in that huge text box. Maybe scale it up a bit, make it a two-liner?
Or you could reduce the height of the text box to only one line.
Also, many of your mana symbols look like the symbol is slightly shifted to one side within the circle, mostly on the C symbol - or is that a shadowy-effect?
Aside from that, very cool cards indeed.
Chandra's flip is clearly tied to the activated ability. No matter how many times that ability resolved this turn, and no matter how much combat damage she dealt this turn, she will only flip if on resolution of her ability, she has dealt a total of 3 damage (possibly but not necessarily including the 1 damage she deals with that ability) this turn.
Here's a possible scenario:
You control a Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh enchanted with Infectious Bloodlust.
Your opponent controls Urza's Armor.
You attack with Chandra, dealing 3 combat damage to your opponent.
You cast any red spell, untapping Chandra.
You activate Chandra's ability targeting your opponent. On resolution, the ability deals 0 damage and then flips chandra.
Banishing Light: yes that works. the notion thief returns immediately when the Light is shuffled back, so it's there just in time for you to draw all the cards. The same is true for Banisher Priest, Chained to the Rocks and Silkwrap. Note however, that all those cards can only exile you opponent's creatures. There is only one card that can exile a creature you control AND return it in time to draw all the cards, that one being Suspension Field.
Oblivion Ring: no, this doesn't work. O-Ring will trigger once it is shuffled into your library, but the trigger has to wait for the aurora to completlty resolve before it can go onto the stack. the cards will be drawn and the lands on the battlefield before you get your Thief back. The same is true for any creatures with Champion, Detention Sphere, Fiend Hunter, and so on.
#1: Choose the value for X
#2: Apply any Additional costs (e.g. Comet Storm's Multikicker or Thorn of Amethyst)
#3: Apply any cost reductions (e.g. Urza's Incubator)
#4: Apply any cost "settings" (Currently only Trinisphere)
So yes, your opponent can choose X=10, for a cost of 10BBB, which the Incubator reduces to 8BBB.
This even works if the card asks for specific types of mana, such as Emblazoned Golem.
So then I'll do it again, please update the numbers...
4 Sakura-Tribe Scout ($0.23)
4 Skyshroud Ranger ($0.16) [1 @ -4]
2 Terravore (3.50)
2 Orcish Squatters (0.34)
2 Inferno Titan (1.45) [1@-2]
2 Primeval Titan ($13.91)
2 Pelakka Wurm ($0.46)
3 Deus of Calamity ($2.50)[1 @ -1]
4 Lightning Bolt ($1.61)
2 Nature's Claim ($0.43)
4 Restore ($0.51) [2 @-4]
2 Life from the Loam (2.87)
4 Edge of Autumn (0.60)

2 Conquer (0.25)
2 Elfhame Sanctuary ($0.35) [2@-2]

2 Terrain Generator ($0.94)
4 Forgotten Cave ($0.19) [2@-2]
4 Tranquil Thicket ($0.19) [2@-2]
6 Forest
8 Mountain
While I have to agree that cheaper value-stuff would have probably been better, we are unfortunatley already in the cutting phase, so no more adding non-land cards is allowed.
I updated the decklist to reflect that:
4 Sakura-Tribe Scout ($0.23)
4 Skyshroud Ranger ($0.16) [1 @ -4]
2 Terravore (3.50)
2 Orcish Squatters (0.34)
2 Inferno Titan (1.45) [1@-2]

2 Pelakka Wurm ($0.46)
4 Lightning Bolt ($1.61)

4 Restore ($0.51) [2 @-4]
2 Life from the Loam (2.87)
4 Edge of Autumn (0.60)
Artifacts, Enchantments & Planeswalkers (12)
4 Aggressive Mining
2 Seismic Assault ($1.60)
2 Conquer (0.25)
2 Elfhame Sanctuary ($0.35) [2@-2]
2 Lodestone Bauble ($0.46)
2 Terrain Generator ($0.94)
4 Forgotten Cave ($0.19) [2@-2]
4 Tranquil Thicket ($0.19) [2@-2]
6 Forest
8 Mountain
And if everyone could remember do reduce
-Number of cards in this category
-Number of cards total in the deck
-Cost of the total deck
Whenever a card is removed, that would be great.
Ghoulcaller's Bell seems like a much more promising option in the long run.
Rootwater Diver can recur both of those artifacts if need be.
Should you decide to run a lot of flashback cards, Runic Repetition might be viable as well.
I'd also prefer not to skip our draw step for more basics, as we will draw enough land with just the two cards from Aggressive mining + the one from our draw step. We currently run 40% lands, so on average around 40% out of the three cards we draw a turn should be lands - that's 1,2.
Now, should we decide to go into ramp-mode, it might indeed be viable - we'd want as many lands on our hand as possible to cheat onto the battlefield with the above mentioned cards. Should we however decide to go for a steamroller-approach, in which we win mostly never running out of cards to play thanks to the insane draw from mining, we'd rather draw more steam than more lands. Especially since it can only tutor basics. If it was able to fetch the cycling lands, that would be quite a lot better.
For the recursion we might go with Life from the Loam. thanks to the reprints in DD and MM it is quite cheap by now, $2.87 from DD.
I do believe it could be a good card in this deck, especially with the now added cycling-lands. Returning the cycling lands from our graveyard at a rate of 1:3, then discarding them again for more steam - and to draw our win condition.
For now I'll add 4 Tranquil Thicket to cycle once Aggressive Mining denies us our land drops.
