I went to a midnight prerelease on Dromoka colors, but I opened Silumgar, the Drifting Death as my legitimate bomb, and the Green was just awkward.
My prerelease card was Avatar of the Resolute, which kept me looking at Green for quite a while, because even with lame or absent bolster cards, megamorph almost guarantees a sizable Avatar. I'm aware that my playstyle may have colored my perception, but the abundant Green was too 'meh' for my tastes.
Ended up going White/Black ground stall with fliers and lots of pinpoint removal, splashing Blue for Silumgar, who brought along two decent Blue splash friends. Interestingly, I played only one card from my Fate Reforged pack.
I lost the first game to an unexpected Deathbringer Regent. You know how they talk about "unfun?" Well, that was pretty unfun. The second game I got stuck on my two opening lands for many turns. I kept up and still would have been in decent shape, but the opponent was Silumgar-themed, so now he had both the mana advantage and the card advantage. Yeah, not coming back from that one. Still, land screw was more fun than Boardwipe Dragon.
I changed a few cards and then proceeded to board-control the rest of my matches 2-0 each, for a 3-1 finish.
Aside from the obvious Bomb of Drifting Death (I had a morph dragon and a monument to support him), here's what overperformed in my deck:
MVP: The singleton Ukud Cobra was amazing ground stall. Nobody wanted to attack it unless they had a bruiser that would trade, and if they were bold enough to trade, I had the trick to save the Snake.
MVP#2: Misthoof Kirin. Flying, vigilance, usually 3/2, a little tricksy. Fantastic! It seems that if this is in my pool, I'm pulled strongly to White. I had two!
Honrable Mention: I didn't care for dash in Fate Reforged, but I had another flier in Black, so I played Reckless Imp. Wow! Whenever I didn't have anything else to do with my mana, I paid two mana to deal two combat damage. Shiny!
Honorable Mention: Center Soul was practically a kill spell every time I played it, but in my stall/skies deck, the rebound was less stellar.
Workhorse: I opened three Sandstorm Chargers that I was never sad to draw. Trade morphs, stall weenies, attack for four. Yep.
I played a Blood-Chin Fanatic as a Gnarled Mass. I had exactly one other Warrior in the deck, but hey, a 3/3 for 3 mana? Sure.
I also splashed Ojutai's Command, drew it a couple of times, but never actually had to play it. It's probably good, I suppose.
All in all, I had a good time, even when a cheesy dragon was flipping the switch to 'defeat.' And I definitely felt like my deck ran ran well on commons and uncommons regardless of the rares involved, although dropping young Silumgar was pretty clutch.
Any interest in Magic the Database any more? I don't want to put work into it, if nobody wants it. If there's interest, I've got some spare time to get card lists going again...
Hey guys, sorry I haven't had time to figure out a new way to generate lists. And I won't have time for a while, I've got other projects going on.
However, if I can get the lists, I'll try to post them. If I come across the installer, maybe I'll put that up too.
Hey fellas, sorry I was gone so long, but I wasn't able to log on to MTGS after it was "Cursed" until today.
If you're still interested in lists, I like the looks of the mtgjson lists that are generated directly from Gatherer. I could write a script (in pretty much any scripting language) that transforms those lists into MTG the DB form.
On the other hand, I see roger has been using MTG Workstation as a source. Any issues with that? Maybe I don't need to do anything but update my download page with roger's lists.
Hey 3kronor, I like the look of the mtgjson lists that Sembiance has referenced, because they are generated directly from Gatherer. It should be a simple task to convert those lists to use in MTG the Database. That is, if you're still interested.
EDIT: I see that rogerbacon is using MTG Workstation lists. They seem reliable? Maybe I'll just sit back and let him do the work (and take the credit)!
Did you have to make any manual adjustments to the SED output?
Not that I recall; I think it was all A-OK. I really ought to rewrite that script - I'm much better at sed than I used to be, so I suspect I could fix a few quirks. When I get the time...
Does anyone know how to write an SQL query to return cards that exist ONLY in a specific set? Magic the Database allows direct SLQ statements and I have found them quite useful so I am hoping someone can help me with this one.
A statement such as this one
Select Distinct CardTitle from Cards WHERE Edition Like 'Planechase 2012 Edition'
is good for getting all cards in an edition but I want to exclude cards that are also in other editions. I know it would be some sort of join statement but I don't know the exact format.
You choose all cards in the set you want, then exclude the cards that exist in other sets. This query is a bit inefficient (takes several seconds even on a fast system), but it does the job:
Select Distinct CardTitle from Cards WHERE Edition = 'Magic 2012' AND CardTitle NOT in (Select Distinct CardTitle from Cards WHERE NOT Edition = 'Magic 2012')
Oh hey, nice Roger! Well, I'm a little late, but it never hurts to have two sources for our lists. So, in addition to rogerbacon's link from the previous post (http://www.sendspace.com/file/5yymk7), you can also get an Avacyn Restored card list for MTDB from
Hey guys! Been a while. Here are all the updates for Magic:the Database since New Phyrexia. Note that I dealt with Transform cards by letting both cards exist in the database and adding notes in each card's text. As always, the main page is here.
The last sticking point I have is that the spoilers list ALL of the editions a card has been in and I would like to remove that part. I've had to do it manually since I can't figure out a way to do it in the script or with regular expressions.
The key to this is to make sure the exact set name is the first line of the file. The sed script keys off the first line as the set name and picks out the correct rarity from the list of editions for each card.

Advice: Always back up your magicdb3.mdb file before updates. Just in case... (Hey, I didn't write it, I just use it.)
