@molz7 - Yeah, Narset box is pretty sweet.
Force of Negation is the new free counterspell from Horizons. MAN does it do everything we need it to do. It only hits non-creature permanents, but those are what we struggle with, especially post board. Being able to tap out turn 2 for a foundry and being able to protect it is huge. Being able to protect a whir feom counter magic as we cast it on their end step is huge. Catching a turn 2 stony, or a Karn, or a Teferi, or scapeshift, or even just an abrade... it's all good. We don't care about card disadvantage as much as a lot of other fair decks because of how thopter sword plays out.
I'm definitely jamming 4 main deck, with probably a few extra cantrips to increase the blue card concentrarion.
Edit: I've been trying to think of some good removal in Ux to shore up creature matchups. Tyrant's Scorn, Detention Sphere, and Supreme Verdict is what comes to mind so far.

DisgruntledElk posted a message on UBx Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas ControlPosted in: ControlQuote from Noctem89 »for those of you wondering why travis' list looks "stock" its because hes my testing buddy and Disgruntled elk online. He ended x-4, losing his top 8 shot to storm where he technically misplayed but it wouldnt have mattered cuz his opp had everything.
Post notes results from him and from my jamming in side events:
Deck feels great in its current form
Jace is meh, we cut both copies out of the main for the 4th serum visions and a krark-clan ironworks. Ironworks is for grindy matchups or combo where we need some way to leverage thopter sword to go over the top. Case in point, Travis' last win was against amulet titan, where he had thopter sword in play for most of the game. His opponent still almost managed to kill him with multiple titans and ruric-thar. Had travis had kci in his deck, it would have been an easier win
spellskite from the board was an all-star, trying to find a way to the main deck.
scissors out of the board was HOT all day. Trav beat tron twice I believe, essentially by being lava axe.deck
Travis here,
And here I was looking to find the deck, and they moved it to the established zone! A lot of what Noctem said sums up my overall thoughts. I can do a tournament report if people are wanting it, but the long and short of it was I was x-1 going into day 2 (only loss was to Brennan DeCandio), then I lost to Jadine (mulls both games 2 and 3), and I definitely misplayed not making a 5/5. I had totally blanked on the IoK in her hand for some reason. What can I say, I was tired :P. Got a snack after that round and was x-2 going into round 13 with very high breakers. I then lost to storm back to back, which Scissors almost got me out of. Beat Daryl Ayers in round 15 in an insane series where both of us were exhausted. Deck is great, but the changes I discussed with Noctem definitely feel correct going forward. I also can't wait for Damping Sphere and Karn, Scion of Urza to really kick Tron and Storm where it hurts. -

...I have to disagree with. Lantern decks play from 2 to 3 Pithing Needles mainboard, and one more in the side. Counting the full playset of Whir and Ancient Stirrings to fetch them, I believe they'll have plenty of answers for good old Jace.Quote from Reedy26 »i think lantern gets a lot worse since jace can basically negate the lock so we probably want to move back to a normal tezz build.
I anything it's an über-powerful tool that they got for themselves. -

I'm not convinced there is a whole lot we can do, but I am experimenting with cutting my academy ruins and inventor's fair and one other land, bringing in 3 ghost quarters, then I made room for a maindeck crucible. Though so far I lost the only game I played against tron. Though I am kinda liking it, as I rarely ever activated fair or ruins. extra ways to deal with nexuses out of affinity are really nice
lots of aggro has just made me go up to 4 foundry/3 sword to maximize odds of just drawing into them, which is usually great vs anything attacking you to death
it's not really gameplay related, but I have always enjoying making my own custom Star Wars themed tokens for my decks. Ages ago I made A-Wing thopters and have been using them in paper for awhile. Though I recently had an idea to make new one that fit in the dice tray of my deckbox (Ultimate Guard Flip & Tray). So today I made these, which turned out pretty well I think. Similarly I recently made some 5/5 tokens for artifacts I animate with Tezz

racing089 posted a message on UBx Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas ControlPosted in: ControlQuote from Reedy26 »i think its been discussed before but how do people like tidehollow strix? yes it doesn't cantrip like baleful strix but other than that its effectively the same card, and we're most of us playing bauble at the moment anyway and some fatal push too, but playing a couple copies of strix means we can whir for removal, can hit removal of tezz +1 and block, kill a dude then sac to foundry to gain a life and a thopter. so yes it might not be the best card but neither are a lot of what we play, but the synergy those cards have in this deck makes it work, similar to affinity.
i know this opens us up to creature removal no longer being dead cards for our opponent and without the cantrip we wouldnt see any value from tidehollow. buuuut we can regenerate with welding jar to prevent said removal or even to keep it in play to kill 2 creatures, and in some cases where we can only whir for 2 instead of 3 we can use strix to remove a problematic dude which might buy us enough time to slam bridge or the combo?
I think you rationalized the reason we don't play it immediately. It needs to draw a card. Would you ever chord of calling for ambush viper? Probably not. Baleful Strix has very limited opportunity cost associated with it and is ALWAYS a 2-1 in creature matchups when uncountered. Tidehollow will always trade for your opponents worst card. It is almost like a punisher card in that respect. They can trade their worst creature or their worst answer for it. Most likely a card that otherwise wasn't doing anything for them in the matchup.
In addition to that it is completely dead in the non=creature matchups like Storm or Tron where Baleful Strix can at least cycle himself.
I would just play any kill spell before I played Tidehollow Strix. We want to avoid playing weak cards just for the sake of the artifact type line. That is going to be the fastest way to have a deck full of weak cards. In reality it reads "Sorcery - Target player sacrifices a creature." Versus "Sorcery - Target player sacrifices a creature. Draw a card." Clearly you wouldn't play the first but you would play the second. -

I have been using foil mirodin lands because flavor. Also gorgoues. However the Unstable lands are tempting. -

OFWGKTA posted a message on UBx Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas ControlI don't think there's anyone here who doesn't want to be tapping a land to make a thopter and gain a life. It feels great, a very good and honest rate.Posted in: Control
What I've observed is that there are two philosophical routes to go with Tez:
A) Using him as a means to assemble an artifact-based combo in a tempo deck (of which thopter/sword is indubitably the strongest)
or
B) Using him as a self contained engine/win con in a control shell
Both are viable ways to end a game in standard, but Occham's Razor is going to favor the self-contained win over a large enough sample size. I think this is the real reason you see self-contained Tez appear in more decks that do well.
I don't think anyone should abandon the combo version of the deck, but I think both philosophies of deck building should be supported and entertained on this thread without a tribalistic mindset taking over attempting to subvert one to the other. -

Since Meltin's list is getting so much attention I am going to chime in on that real quick as well. I don't think it is good. The deck is basically 4 Ensnaring Bridges plus 11 planeswalkers. That is fine but it loses to so many decks in the current metagame. It has pretty lopsided match ups and can run hot to spike a small event but for every time that happens you get obliterated by any deck that can beat an Ensnaring Bridge. This is Modern, when do you have time to play 4 Temple of Deceit in your deck?
You're looking at it wrong. It's not Ensnaring bridge + planeswalkers. It's lantern control with walkers instead of mill rocks. I haven't played it yet myself, but I can see from years of experience with tezz and control that the strategy is sound. I recommend giving it a shot before you dismiss it. It looks a house, and my guess is you're missing out on a ton of free credit while this deck still flies under the radar. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

As far as im concerned chalice can come in against phoenix, tron, GDS, and maybe storm but we have damping sphere for that.. other than those matchups its not super useful and thoptersword is pretty good against phoenix anyway, id rather the percentage points against dredge if im honest.
