i found a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95eRUVO8dso pentad prism putting in work, multiple tezz's also seemed pretty backbreaking here. cool match to watch for sure.

i was a pretty hardcore chalice fan for a long time, i still run 3 in the main but recently i've been concluding that they just don't impact the game enough. chalice on 2 is way more useful in modern but that locks most of our deck out. also there is no reliable way to power it out turn 1 either. still a solid choice if your meta is heavy on burn, though i think sun droplet could probably help more here and has uses outside of the burn matchup, i.e. non scapeshifted valakut triggers. still locks shadow decks out badly so again if your meeta has lots of DS then run it.

realistically those slots could probably be more useful dedicated to something else. if the meta slows down enough then lodestone golem could work, though we currently aren't running much/any removal plus bridge is a heavy part of our game so maybe not the best option. chalice on 1 does shut off like a 3rd of Gx tron's decks though so chalice into quicksilver fountain is pretty disgusting for them to deal with. though means not a lot unless you can present a quick clock as well.

i know this isnt directed at me but perhaps i can help with the first two: 1) if i wasnt playing green i'd likely still keep the fetches and just play a 3rd watery grave, it just makes the manabase smoother than having so many lands that come in tapped and river of tears potentially locking you out of whir mana if you're not careful. also its nice to be able to fetch in response to a blood moon, makes jacestorm more effective etc.

    2) big tezz is a solid choice as a 5th whir/extra win con. you've got to be careful about your curve and being able to get under bridge. the PW-based list from october played 3 instead of any whir of invention but was rocking the full playset of brutality for bridge reasons. honestly i think jace is kinda replacing him now though, comes down a turn earlier, has more useful/more abilities, is still a win con.

    Awesome report @racing

Corey burkhart recently wrote an article saying he was looking to drop visions in grixis control because its not a powerful card, hes moved to playing more disruption since it has more impact overall. He still plays a set of scour because of the decks synergy. Which is why we play bauble. i think if youre playing disruption theres no need for visions also. And as you mentioned you're struggling to empty your hand, i've found increasing the number of mainboard brutality to be a big help here. It also helps in removing annoying creatures that get under bridge. Brutality is a house in our deck, probably moreso than most other black-based decks in modern. Between bauble, relic/spellbomb, tezz, whir, and jace we dont need more card draw really. Just enough power to survive until the late game. Just food for thought.

so do you think getting behind a bridge and activating jace/tezz all the way to the finish line is a better way to go these days? playing so many 4 drops alongside whir feels rough trying to get below bridge, even with 3 brutality. im wondering if cranes could help that a little bit by giving us blockers while we're trying to get rid of our hand?

@radouf could go back to cranes and play 2 copies of whir? reduces the necessity for UUU a little bit and might make it easier to accommodate BB?

@Racing does 2 jace feel like the right number to you? Could you see playing more?

How is casting whir without the prisms? Do you prefer the permanent ramp of talismans to the one time acceleration of prism?

Do you think curving t3 lili/damnation into t4 jace/tezz is better than t3 jace/tezz? How did you find it without removal and discard, did you have trouble emptying your hand for bridge at all?

    So many questions!!

Im so tempted to just play the planeswalker list going forward.

i feel like there's going to be a lot more aggro going around with the jace unban so i could totally see replacing the thoughtseizes for more brutality and a couple copies fatal push, i'd probably drop an opal for a signet or the 4th talisman too. possibly even go 2/2 on thoptersword and 2 whirs to make room for 2 lilis. with jace being legal i have a feeling this deck is going to be more successful by just bridging up, playing a bunch of discard and removal and riding some planeswalkers to victory, and if we happen to stumble across thoptersword along the way then great. but with the help of a brainstorm every turn i dont think we need to be jamming the combo as much or forcing it down our opponents throat. we'll be seeing so much of our deck that we'll come across the parts we need anyway. slamming a T3 planeswalker followed by T4 planeswalker just seems great, regardless of which ones they are, and even if the first one gets removed it leaves a gap for the second walker to come in and do it's thing. lili, jace and tezz all win games if they resolve and can stick around for a turn or two.

so if i can get enough cash together i'll be testing a more PW oriented build with thoptersword.

i can see jace as both a 4 of and a 2 of, depending on the number of whirs. i think meltiin's planeswalker version of the deck gets a lot better, with a couple whirs added in for consistency. i want to play 4 tezz and 4 jace but at 4 mana its a bit steep but we can power them out turn 3 with a talisman or signet.

i think since jace lets us mold our hand we should play some higher costed high impact cards, lili, damnations etc. battle at the bridge seems like it would be useful for the life gain to keep us alive, with a high curve, lots of removal and obviously bridge.

i think lantern gets a lot worse since jace can basically negate the lock so we probably want to move back to a normal tezz build. maybe looking at the original shota list using updated cards (push, brutality, whir), or meltiin's list as i mentioned above.

    Quote from racing089 ยป

KCI has its benefits but I am still firnly against running the third piece. The games I lose because I can't instant win with thopter/sword are far fewer than the games where time seive or KCI are do nothing cards.

i agree, i think i'd much rather run a witchbane orb main to combat combo, and decks with a lot of reach. i can see keeping the sieve in the side for grindy matchups so you can just hit the oops, i win button.

so given the pro tour result, i feel we need to ask the question... what do we do if bridge gets banned? i dont think it'd be that devastating to us since we can play a more removal heavy list but it would definitely hurt. main damnations? glint nest cranes and hangarback walkers?

ok so lots of aggro and tron at the pro tour. good news about aggro since we dont usually have issues with many aggro decks, the high number of tron is annoying though, so we ideally need to start finding more/better ways of dealing with that deck, but otherwise i feel like we could be reasonably well positioned?!

only just noticed the link to the write up on the page of that list i posted yesterday: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/modern-stax-ub/deck-update/221996/

storm, tron, E-tron and burn all beat pretty handily. seems that without the SSG to power out stuff a turn earlier it just kinda folds a little bit
