So, I wanted to spice our EDH games up a bit and stumbled upon planechase - I like the concept of board-altering effects in general, so I wanted to create something similar and I need some advice on it.
The idea is to take magic cards that alter the way the game is played, like Teferi's Puzzlebox or Windfall or channel - now, for those three examples, they are bad ones, because they can easily be abused by one player to win the game (obvious for channel, and all you need for Teferi's / Windfall is a "you don't draw more than 1 card anymore) - so maybe effects should resolve a bit more around some enchantments like "all creatures have lifelink" (1. Point on the list: Searching for impactful cards that alter the way the game is played without breaking it / forming combos with regularly played cards.) There should be around 100 of them for variety I think
2) When is a new card revealed? Whenever a commander is cast? Whenever it's the first players turn? Other trigger conditions? Also: Will the old effect be replaced, or will all the cards stack and create a cluster**** of rules (wich could be fun, but also really annoying, therefore I currently tend to replace them whenever a new card is revealed)
So, have anyone ever tried something similar and can share his / her experiance here?
So, what are your predictions for the next magic set? Enemy / Story / Plane?
My biggest bet would be on:
Enemy: Phyrexia (Tezzeret escaped with a way to make them planeswalk again, karn enlistened the gatewatch to help, everything points to this)
Story: Either invade on new phyrexia (unlikely, since we should get a new world soon)
Or invasion on another world
Wich one?...
Theros (Pro: Believe in yawmagoth to revive him as a Legendary Enchantment Artifact Creature - God :D. Also: Elspeth and probably a meeting with gideon in the underworld Con: Again, no new world)
Vrynn: Descent level of technology to inflict, whished to visit by some fans, Jace survived WAR, Phyrexian invasion would set the world apart from the "Artifact set theme" that made it clash with kaladesh.
So to sum it up, my storyline prediction:
1) Phyrexia invade Vrynn
2) Then, we go to New Phyrexia and blow it up with the stylix
3) Phyrexians Escape to Theros and recreate yawmagoth to make Theros New New Phyrexia
4) We go searching for nukes somewhere else, since we can't use the stylix again (New World, introduce new baddie or bring eldrazi back)
5) We Nuke Phyrexia
While magic is not exactly "expensive" (tho you can surely make it expensive, I spend 5000€ on cards alone in the last year, not counting sleeves, playmats and so on - well, I also made 500 back due to selling some cards that have gone waaay up, so I guess I can relate to the 90% buying 10% selling;) ) but its also about "what do you get". Kitchentable player btw
60 paper cards for 500€ could net you a playstation + playstation vr + moove controllers or aim controller or a game if you get a good deal.
(180€ playstation 4 slim, 250 ps vr, 70 for the game or controllers)
Now compare this:
- A Console with lots of development time and high-tech materials
- A headset stuffed with tech that lets you dive into other worlds
- A game that was developed by a ****ton of people and consumed lots of time not only by programming, but also balancing and artwork. Compare the artwork going into a game alone with the artwork going into a magic set - it has to be A LOT more. Development Time: Sometimes years, while a single magic set comes down to 1/4 of a year (yes, I know, they are in development and playtesting much longer, but there are also multiple sets in construction at the same time, so cut this as you like)
- Some neat free 2 play games like warframe, wich will allow you to sink houndreds of hours into.
Oooooor you could have
60 paper cards, and if you are lucky 15 more to sideboard. Hope you don't get the bannhammer.
- "Permanent" costs (mainly: your electricity bill) are also usually much cheaper than the cost to regularly drive to your gamestore.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love magic, but I can also see why people see it as an expensive hobby - its not expensive in comparison to other hobbies, but its expensive for "just" beeing 60 pieces of cardboard with cool artwork and a good game balance. If you order something at amazon you get a decks worth of cardboard as packaging - cardboard is percieved as "trash-material" in many cases. Even printed cardboard envelops 50% of our products (the other 50% have plastic... some have both)
So, comparing on what a card costs, and how much it costs to produce that card, in comparison to other things can seem quite expensive.
Also, other hobbies have practical uses:
If you have a Car, you can drive wherever you want. A staple of 60 magic cards... can sit on your counter until you play with it.
Could someone sum up wich guilds are pro- and wich are con Nicol Bolas?
From what I understood (and by all means, correct me if I'm wrong):
Pro:
- Golgari: Vraska is Pro Bolas, but only until Jace triggers the "Return Memories"
- Izzet: Guild Master replaced by Pro-Bolas Ral Zhek (Has "How" been explained anywhere?
- Azurios: Dovin Baan got installed as a Guild Master after Vraska Solidified Ispheria, has some renegades under latviana.
- Orzhof: Released their ghost powers under Kaja, who, as far as I got, also got installed by bolas?
Con:
- Dimir: Con
- Boros: Con
- Simic: Con
- Selesnya: Con, but for whatever reason have internal struggle?
No Clue:
Gruul (Is Domi Rade the guild leader now, installed by bolas?)
Rakdos (Would assume "Yey, Chaos but **** Bolas?")
