Good stuff zeerbe, I remember having a hard time doing 5 color stuff when I was making proxies. . . Got to get back into the game. I still have 20+ sheets to use.
It'll be like playing High Tide without Candelabras. It's doable, it works, but it's overall much worse. You just lose out on your easiest win-con and your best tutor. You don't need it but there are few reasons for not using him.
That's what I was thinking.
I basically have the deck built, I'm just waiting to win a bid on a recruiter, or find one for cheap that's beat up.
reason for wanting a beat up one is I plan on altering every card so it's borderless, it's my current challenge as I foiled out my last deck.
If you can't play Recruiter, it's not the end of the world. You'd basically rely more on Trinket Mage and Fierce Empath. Notably, I've observed that newer Animar players place too large of an emphasis on Imperial Recruiter and squander hands that have full stack potential. They were basically viewing it as the only combo, and overlooked a lot.
Earlier versions of the deck focused on hitting a T2 Animar at all costs (Lotus Petal, Chrome Mox, Spirit Guides etc), and were more reliant on Recruiter to compensate for the lowered resources afterwords. Additionally, there used to be a huge issue of combo sustainability, at which point recruiter into metamorph->peregrine drake acted as a reset, but more importantly gave clamp that extra push. In newer builds, there's enough clamp fodder to almost always execute an infinite combo off of cradle/clamp. Wirewood Herald now acts as that card advantage bridge, chaining as needed into empath->artisan->herald->wood elves->arbor dryad.
Basically, Imperial Recruiter is, and always will be, a complete an absolute powerhouse, but he is no longer the linchpin. The deck has shifted towards being a true systematic combo deck. I named the deck after Imperial Recruiter because he represents the mentality of the deck, which was completely divergent of the other Animar Combo decks at the time.
I've been wanting to build a true combo 1v1 french list deck, figured I'd go here. My scene doesn't play french, but I'd like to have a nice deck anyways.
I'll proxy the rest that I haven't found in my collection and mess around with the deck. See what I can do without recruiter for now.
took second in a 1v1 tourney and took the deck to a multiplayer tourney.
1v1:
can't remember what generals i played against, but in the last round, i had a turn 3 linvala on me, and it was basically over from there. I had crucible out, and a fetch in the graveyard. just trying to thin my deck out to hit solid cards. failed.
but the other 2 were a cake walk. My meta varies from semi casual to semi cutthroat. so i usually have it pretty easy, even when i play against a competitive deck
multiplayer. oh dear.
so i played a 4 player ffa before the tourney. and everyone focused me, and focused me hard. but they've never played against the deck. and the other sisay deck that was played there was... well, trash.
either way, sisay went out a total of 5-6 times, but i only got to fetch once. and i had board control still throughout the whole game. long story short, i didn't do so swell in the ending.
tourney begins.
there are 6 players, including myself. so we broke up into 2 pods of 3.
pods were perfect for me.
pod 1 was the high end decks, 5 color good stuff, rafiq * none typical rafiq*, and a different deck that ran black white.
pod 2 was me, a sharuum deck from the practice game and another deck that's slipping my mind, but also from the practice game.
opening hand i keep and i end up turn 1 land sol ring crypt bloom tender turn 2 sisay, turn 3 cradle teeg, turn 4 hokori, turn 5 iona, then i started to combo out with kataki, crovax and kamahl.
so I advanced to the high pod round 2. i had an awesome start, but it went down hill quickly as they both focused me.
I love the deck, i love the toolbox feel of it. but i definitely need to update the deck.
I am only a few cards short of a competitive edric deck that I'll start playing with when a high prize is on the line, and only then because my meta doesn't take kindly to people that play clique style decks. even if they are my friends
till then, my casual - kinda competitive deck is voltron phelddagrif * this deck is solid and it's not even done, wins multiplayer games even lol*
kinda comp -comp/ have fun deck is sisay
comp - cutthroat is edric.
now cards to take out of the deck. i feel like mindslayer is a 1 turn deal and is really mana intensive, i've only searched for this once out of 30+ games or so.
I mind you that i haven't updated this to m12 or anything.
dosan all dependent upon your meta. I don't need it in mine.
kataki, obviously meta as well.
i took out the guy that players gain control of their own permanents and i replaced it with blazing archon and it has done wonders for me
i feel like there needs to be some other removal, to where at some points in time. the battlefield is overwhelming and we can't take it back under control. I'm keeping mangara in just because it's spot removal, even if you have to wait a turn. I'd rather wait a turn than wiff and not get removal and cost me the game.
more thoughts to come later. just a late night post before i hit the sack...
I have some custom deck boxes, I'll have to upload pictures of them. I've had compliments from everyone that see's the beast. I'll be soon doing art on the box, or putting foils from peeled cards on the box. make it legit
played against kalia, Rafiq, and some mono red deck. He didn't stand a chance. he conceded after I destroyed 2 of his lands. so turn 5 i won. haha.
the kalia was intense. I normally shoot for Arashi, The Sky Asunder when i play against kalia. starting hand i had it, and the turn before i was going to play it, he made me discard it. and i was at 8 life when he had a bunch of flyers out. I top decked a primal command. shuffled arashi back in and got her. discarded her. wiping his board. then i set up teeg and iona which made me win.
you guys are playing Nim Deathmantle? I was unsure about it. will have to test it. I need to find an elesh norn, I busted my butt tourney day to get one, but no one will trade it to me. haha. are you guys keeping crovax in, or no? i like being able to pay life to return him if needed.
I haven't been able to play this against a clique deck or edric. I have an edric deck and i personally thing that it'd fold to it hard haha.
haven't played zur with sisay, but my friends deck always lands a turn 3 zur, and 4th turn he'll tutor for Armageddon, which is basically gg from there. the only thing i can think of is a quick lignify, a random blazing archon * which i popped in over the guy that takes your permanents back each turn * no stealing in my meta right now*
I'll try to get some pictures of my sisay deck and post them. It's kind of in the process of getting pimped.
went 3-0 my last tourney, and played multiple games outside of the tournament. i won 2 games in the tourney due to LD. I absolutely love this deck haah.
Why not throw a rough list together, post it, then work on improvements based on the suggestions you get? Going this route, you're going to have more of a connection with the deck - which is a pretty good idea for this format - and contribute something to the community.
I apologize if you're a longtime EDH player, but people trying to find lists for a format with some inherently personal touches to the decks is a bit of a pet peeve that's been coming up more recently with the COMM release.
I will attempt to post a list, or copy and paste a list that i have been fond of, if i find one that is.
I am a longtime player. but i like having a list, and tweak as i see what decks give me trouble. also, my meta is semi cutthroat. and different decks are constantly being brought in. the biggest trouble i have is a 5 color good stuff deck. I did want to make a hermit druid deck. but i didn't want to combo too hard and make the casual players quit.
so i would find a taxing deck to be competitive enough for the 5 color deck, as well as being nice enough to allow the casual players to be able to play.
That's what I was thinking.

Is there any Way to run the deck without imperial recruiter? Or should I just go to a different list until I get a recruiter?
What's the current template everyone is using?

If there is one out there, and i missed. please just link me and this thread can be closed.
if not, Lets get this started and make a insane, top of the line Grand Arbiter Augustin IV taxing deck.
t1 land
t2 primal.
t3 no land drop, but you can tap land for mana, bounce to level primal. play land, tap again. then tap primal.
it's like you didn't miss a land drop.
