thoughts on spellskite in the board? is it just bad? i also feel like im the only one testing with baral. he has been a complete powerhouse in the games that i have played. I play Mono U
Spellskite is good it has been played a lot
I played with baral as well but it doesnt have evasion so it died a bit too often to be played main. I m not sold about sideboarding it
if jace is unbanned and people start to play it no matter what just because it is blue, then probably the state of blue in modern could even become worse
the locust god could have been such a cool card for turns since the amount of draw power we have... 3-4 tokens a turn for free O: but it costs 6 mana so meh
swarm intelligence could be very cool but again, too much mana
I've been lurking this thread for a long time and want to thank everyone for their contributions. I posted a tournament report and discussion thread on Reddit. Be forewarned that some of my opinions clash with the majority opinions here, but they're just opinions so do what you want with them.
I'll answer any questions there. Keep taking turns!
welcome! congrats on your results and damn, loved the way you wrote that reddit report of gp vegas gonna add your list at the primer but i see a lot of cards didn't impress you. would you like to post a more "stock" corrected list here so i can add this instead for the ub splash?
and we want a picture of the full foiled out deck asap
5) lockout control cards such as ensuring bridge and blood moon are not in blue. (In legacy, there is stasis and opposition etc
While I agree with you in general, I should point out that Stasis and Opposition are practically unplayable in Legacy. Outside of CounterTop (which is banned now), the best lockout cards aren't in Blue. Death & Taxes is a deck of prison cards and it's mono-White, and Lands (with Life from the Loam+Ghost Quarter/Wasteland) doesn't have a trace of Blue in it.
In fact, it's odd people seem to regard Stasis as such a powerful card. As I understand, the thing was a basically a junk rare until Necropotence became the deck to beat and then Stasis became good because it was really good against Necropotence because a mono-Black deck had very few ways to deal with enchantments.
Wizards needs to print something good in blue. (Yes the best card in modern is blue snapcaster Mage, but that's about it)
I'd honestly disagree with this. The best card in Modern is definitely not Snapcaster Mage. I'd put Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, and Thoughtseize above it.
stasis forces the opponent to play a different game of magic, that's why it is a strong card. then we can talk about what is the best shell and how it is positioned in the meta and how certains decks (manaless dredge for example) simply don't give a damn about statis while other just auto lose when it hits the field
Burn is forever going to be a bad match-up. In Modern, you just have to accept that every deck have some.
The only version that I tried that could consistently beat burn was my UR version that played 4 Simian spirit Guide and 4 Chalice of the void main deck.
It was quite some time ago but I must say I really liked that version and with Death Shadow being huge right now I could see it being a good reason to try it again since Chalice is excellent against them.
Chalice on turn 1 gives you free wins. Howling Mine on turn 1 too. And Blood Moon too.
I play that too every now and then since the Eldrazi winter ahah ohhh the giggles
23 lands
7 mines
10/12 warps
rest could be any kin of desruption. probably a bit of self milling in ug with tarmos could be good as well. we could probably go bug to add some discard to fuel tarmo instead of self milling
If it was truly a BUG Time Warp list, I think I'd try to just fill up on targeted discard, remand, gigadrowse, and tarmogoyf. Maybe one or two weird tribal cards to add to the "not-Delerium" count. Does it make sense to run LotV alongside Mines in TimeWarp?
mmmm i don't think we have space for her.
turn 1 fetch+discard into turn 2 tarmo 3/4, turn 3 serum vision + brutality or mana open for remands seems better. we also have to stick a mine in the field so probably i'd prefer eot dictate than a turn 3 lotv. we should not forget we are taking turns so we should still aim at that kind of gameplay..

The whole discussion is pointless, the people that critize Grixis DS want a tier 1 deck that plays counterspells as its primary form of interaction not black discard, that's all there is to it.
I don't mind that Grixis Shadow is a T1 deck. I actually have grown to enjoy playing the deck and enjoy playing a powerful deck for the first time in a long time. But as someone who enjoys playing the Snap/Bolt game, and as someone who has been waiting for a good Snap/Bolt deck since the banning of Twin, it's been a long and pretty miserable wait. Even current builds of Shadow are running between 0-1 Bolts because other cards (like black removal) are just better. If I can't play a meaningful control deck with Snaps and Bolts, I'd at least like to play a tempo/burn strategy. Instead, all "we" have available is this black, discard/creature attrition deck.
Most of it stems back to the Twin ban because, regardless of the REAL reasons for banning, the words they put in the announcement were that it was banned to open up all these suppressed similar decks like "Jeskai and Temur." All the while, URx-based reactive decks have gotten worse and worse with every new set while powerful broken strategies got better and better. So it's a combination of these kinds of decks being objectively weak AND other proactive strategies becoming so much better, faster, powerful, and resilient.
UR turns with 4 bolts and 4 snapcasters and some blood moons is cool i promise. try it out! it also opens you for mudcap experiment combos after side
That is amazing with mana up. Pay two to copy, say, Invisible Stalker, go to combat and attack, then after blockers are declared, pay another 2 two become, say, Blightsteel Colossus to kill someone via infect. Tons of shenanigans here!
Congrats to Daniel if he ever reads this on the awesome finish (it would be great if he paid us a visit to break down his card choices and matchups).
Also, big hello to Feline, so cool that you are joining us here. High Tide was one of my favorite decks back in 1999/2000 and Turns has always felt like a great Modern analog.
My initial thoughts on Daniel's deck, having watched the matches but not actually tested the black splash yet:
-The turns package 4,3,3 is perfect IMO
-The colorless land choices are perfect IMO
-Snapback I can see being great with Snapcaster Mage
-I've tested Censor and it just seems almost strictly worse than Remand in this deck.
-I think he could have won the whole thing if he cut some of the janky cards
4-4-2 is actually better, you will always have a ptw able to animate a land anyway, but you will more likely miracle a mastery
I think taking turns fills this "blue deck" role pretty well.
it mostly is a mono U deck that plays 0 creatures if not one or two snapcaster. i actually play turns for this specific reason, i just hate creatures and i like to cast spells. i also like islands
I just noticed he is playing 10 turn cards. What do you think about that? I'm now in 12 and I think it could be too much...
12 if no snapcaster, 11 if you feel risky
10 is fine if you have 2 snapcaster maindeck
I'm down to 9 warp effects which has been fine for me, no snapcaster mage. Tried going to 8, but it felt too dicey, even though I managed decently well still.
how many mine effects and remands are you playin? lists heavy on mines and draw power are okay if they run less warps
Spellskite is good it has been played a lot

variance for needle probably
