any resources for an update sideboard guide against major archetypes, and potential tech to be on the look out for? Looking to study before upcoming GP.
1. Jund
2. Abzan/Junk
3. Burn/Zoo
4. Titan/RG Scapeshift
5. Temur Scapeshift
6. Living End
7. Tron
8. Merfolk
9. Jeskai/Grixis Control
10. Affinity
11. Abzan Company (and other chord variants)
Thank you so much for this primer. This is likely to be my first EDH deck!
I have a good bit of money to work with, but I am unlikely to purchase the following cards until Eternal Master is released:
1. Mox Diamond
2. Imperial Recruiter
3. Mana Crypt
Outside of Qasali Pridemage what are the best ways to deal with graveyard hate?
In the post-eldrazi world in April, how do you all predict Abzan Company will fair?
Point 1 - depends on the gy hate - there's also Reclamation sage for artifacts and enchantments, and there's abrupt decay. Pridemage is probably the best option for the deck. For creatures, like Scooze, you have Fiend hunter, Decay and Path (and maybe redcap or big game hunter, depending on how big Scooze is). Path is my favorite of these as it's so versatile.
As noted, angel/feeder or playing "fair" are also good options.
Point 2: Probably quite well. Bloom, one of the worst matchups, got banned. Twin, a slightly-unfavorable-to-even matchup got nerfed as well. Tron is the only really terrible matchup the deck has. If it's not the boogieman of the post-april modern, Abzan Coco should be very well positioned. Elves is also a poor matchup, though it's not common, and scapeshift can also be a pain, though it's also not common. As long as modern is an aggro playground, Abzan Coco will probably be tier 1 due to it's very good matchups against aggro and even-to-good matchups against midrange and control.
However, keep in mind that the Eldrazi aren't going to going to be annihilated when Eye or Temple (probably Temple) gets banned; Thought-Knot Seer and Reality Smasher are still great at normal cost and fantastic as turn 3 and 4 plays (respectively). Eldrazi will probably turn into a midrange deck and play discard, board wipes and/or more removal instead. We'll just have to see how this archetype evolves post-ban.
Interesting comment about Eldrazi post-ban. From my testing, I have not won games keeping fair hands (w/o eye or temple), unless I luckily draw into them within the first 2-3 draws.
Currently building this deck. Please bare with me regarding these questions:
1. How important is Voice of Resurgence in this deck? Are there budget options? What is the maximum # you would need?
2. Fulminator Mage - Played as 4 of to deal with eldrazi? And tron after bans? Or 2-3 is enough?
3. Reasons for Archangel of Thune?
4. Reasons for Linvala?
I honestly have no idea what Modern deck to settle on. My biggest problem? My financial situation makes it that I can technically build any tiered Modern deck at any time. However, at the same time, I just can't rationalize spending so much money on cards. Plus, even if I owned every tiered deck, I can't play them all. The management of the cards would be a headache already.
I have built some decks in whole: Tron and Burn. I also have a bunch of essential pieces to other decks: Snapcaster, Goyfs, etc. My biggest missing pieces are probably Zen Fetches and Lillis. My problem is that after building Tron and Burn, I am just not sure how much I enjoy playing them. It doesn't help that playing Tron in this meta is abysmal. My friends also have little desire to play rounds against Burn. I believe part of me wants to play combo or midrange most.
So how did you all finalize the decks you would invest in and settle on?
This isnt so much an aggro deck as a tempo deck, as evidenced by the discard and removal. The amount of colorless mana available is quite sufficient to cast the Seers and Smashers. My mana base has yet to be an issue with this deck. The Glares and Advocates keep enough pressure off of me long enough to start dropping Rhino and friends turn after turn with Anafenza and Abzan Charm putting my creatures out of Languish range, which most of the time doesnt get played unless I'm facing off against Atarka Red. Glare is amazing in that match up as I can safely execute the biggest baddest threat coming for my life total.
12G, 14W, 14B, 8C does not let you cast your spells, regardless of anecdotal evidence.
Went 3-1 tonight, losing to Affinity in the finals.
This is a very powerful deck. First time I have been able to play with TKS. Good lord it is good.
Beat BG Eldrazi 2-0, Suicide Zoo 2-1, Selesnya Tokens 1-0-1, and lost to Affinity 0-2. I drew poorly against Affinity and had to mulligan in game 2. He dropped an early blood moon with plating and a ravager. GG.
Only change I would make is more Affinity hate in the side. Overall this deck felt amazing.
This is what I am thinking right now. Haven't tested it, but seems good. The board is very much in flux, but I think 3-4 stony will be correct after the twin ban. There will be a lot of affinity and RG tron.
Also, is it worth mainbording Crumble to Dust main if my meta has 40% tron and scapeshift players per week?

Any good replacements for the time being?

Also, is horizon canopy just a premium card for late game top decking?

Thanks for all your help!

This mana-base will not allow you to cast IOK or POE consistently on turns 1 through 3.
