Rendroc posted a message on U/B Rogues TribalOk, reigniting this thread. This deck got a great new addition in Brazen Borrower. The deck lacked disruption, which is what these tribal decks need to succeed. All it had before was Blackguard and maybe some sideboard Noggin Whack.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Even Rankle, Master of Pranks, is a possibility, though a bit expensive, it's a very powerful card.

FunkyDragon posted a message on Fists of Flame, or "why developing specifically for EDH is making the format worse"Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Yep. Couldn't possibly have been designed for Feather, the Redeemed, which came out much closer to the release of Fists of Flame. It was for Zada and Zada alone, despite Zada having been printed four years earlier.Quote from Carthage »to me, this card is so glaringly obviously designed exactly for zada and nothing else it annoys the crap out of me. -

Drain Life posted a message on Sheldon's Thoughts on infinite combosI agree with what people are saying is the intention of the format, but the progressive slide is inevitable in my experiences.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
When I began in late 2007, it was the bulk rare and common/uncommon box fodder format. Nobody was using their good cards. Nobody was breaking apart their legacy or vintage decks to use original dual lands and fetch lands. However, it did not take long for that to change.
Even in the most casual of EDH games, it still feels bad to hold a 6cmc spell you are dying to cast and you top deck a land which has an EtB tapped clause and are set back a whole round at the table. As a result, it become a priority to invest in a stable and consistent mana base. Before you know it, your deck(s) are not budget anymore and the feeling you get from "The sunk cost fallacy" creeps in. It doesn't even have to be an arms race, but simply justifying the cost of what you have invested in. -

The Coffin is no longer nearly as relevant with Iona gone. Hero's Downfall slots out easily with the gain of The Elderspell and Force of Despair. Mausoleum Secrets is a better choice than Succumb to Temptation usually. And the Grindstone + Painter's Servant combo works out better for the deck, though Painter's Servant has its own ups and downs. Works very well with several cards, but nombos with a few of the destroy spells. I had mixed feelings on Shrouded Lore. Reassembling Skeleton and Hero's Downfall may find a place again some other time.

DementedKirby posted a message on Sidisi, Brood Tyrant: Zombie horde and shenanigans! (3 versions!)Hey all, I officially made the move to MTGNexus. First thing I'm going to try and do is transfer my Primers over there and the threads I currently have that I follow the most. I don't know how many else made the move but I still have to get used to the new formatting of the site. I will not pay as much attention to MTGSalvation once I transfer my most followed threads. However, I will still be around here for those who didn't make the move. That being said, I will only do so to maintain my primers since they have helped many people and continue doing so. It's the least I can do since this community has helped me in these endeavors since I first joined Xmas day almost 7 years ago. For those interested, here's the link to the thread for Sidisi, Brood Tyrant in MTGNexus. It's still a work in progress and hopefully I can get around to completing Polukranos and Mazirek. Afterwards I'll make more threads on the decks I like to play most or those I'm brewing.Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists
On a sidenote, I'm also planning on starting a Youtube channel dedicated to Commander. I'm going to make videos that are typical of a Commander channel but I'm also writing up content to fill some niches and stand out among my peers who have spent years doing this. MtG has always been one of my favorite hobbies even though I've always been on/off on it. Maybe if I delve deeper into the various facets of it it'll be harder to get off than to stay on. Hopefully I can remain connected to the community that has helped me remain in this hobby for as long as I have for the longest time. -

Carthage posted a message on Control decks: How do you stay alive against the whole table attacking you early? You don't.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
If the whole table is trying to make one person lose, that person should lose. If they don't, the deck power gap is so great that you are no longer playing a real game.

Unfortunately it looks like the forum is going to be split so I'll look into maintaining a thread on Nexus as well when I'm not working all the time.

I haven't even been able to get War of the Spark of Modern Horizons cards yet, sigh.
Stuff like Ground Seal and Grafdigger's Cage is why I currently run Oblivion Stone and Unstable Obelisk. Gonti usually gets aimed at the green player in that kind of game, too, and I've had good luck grabbing artifact/enchantment removal with him. Praetor's Grasp can be handy for that, too, if I can produce any color mana (currently can't, though). And then if I don't have any of those to solve the problem, I just try to make it painful for them.

I think about my mana a bit differently because of the use of combos like token-producers with Phyrexian Altar. Last game I played with Chainer (it's a little while between games these days), I sat on a swamp and a C land for a few turns and got lucky with Abhorrent Overlord, Deathgreeter, and Phyrexian Altar. Even though I struggled a bit at first and missed a few drops, I ended the game with 6 lands that could have only produced 3BBB, and that seemed like a normal game to me. It does make it more vulnerable to somebody exiling the Altar and/or Pitiless Plunderer and cutting me off from that ability, but I'm okay with that.

I'll be going along to the new home the mods are building since so many others are. I may even be able to put more work into the OP before read-only mode hits. If I'm able to begin the new thread over there before time is up here, I'll edit the OP to add a link and a statement.
Alright, here's my take on Modern Horizons:
Azra Smokeshaper — ETB to make a creature indestructible is functional in Chainer, but not nearly as useful as removal or other ETB stuff.
Cordial Vampire — A vampire theme is a definite possible direction for Chainer, and this one could be good in that.
Defile — Even with a bunch of snow swamps, this is not better in this deck than Tragic Slip would be. Edit: DOH! RTFC, lyon.
Feaster of Fools — We don't sac en-masse like that, really. Seems more of a Marchesa kind of card.
Force of Despair — This one is interesting, but still more situational than other wipes available to us. Could be nice versus the kind of deck that would make infinite tokens with haste and swing the same turn.
Plague Engineer — This one is cool. Goblin/Elf/etc. Potentially good against tribal token decks... but only against tribal tokens decks assuming they're not buffing the tokens. Massacre Wurm is still better.
Warteye Witch — I took out Viscera Seer (not a bad sac outlet for Chainer in general) because I was rarely actually sacking creatures to it. If there was a better outlet (like Phyrexian Altar) I'd be using that one instead. But I do love my trigger engines that do stuff when I sack my critters. This would be right at home with my card draw triggers like Grim Haruspex and Smothering Abomination.
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician — Cool card, but I just don't think it's for this. At least not for this take on Chainer. Not only do you have to have your own creature to sac (which is where Vampiric Rites falls down sometimes), but you have to have another to target (though Yawgmoth is legal) for the -1/-1 counter or you won't be able to draw that card. This could be fine, but it makes me wary of it.
Mox Tantalite — I'd rather have the sooner benefit of Fellwar Stone or Charcoal Diamond, but if this doesn't come too late in the game three turns usually isn't terrible. For any color to hypothetically help with Praetor's Grasp, I'd still prefer Fellwar or even
Darksteel Ingot. But I will get one.
Prismatic Vista — This is actually a really good substitute for the fetches I run, and I may even replace one to free it up for another deck.
In Short
I might test Yawgmoth. Force of Despair would be worth testing if I had more sudden-swarm decks to contend with in my meta. I have a suspicion that Warteye Witch is a winner, though.

Definitely not crazy. I don't run Ashnod's in mine, there are several sac outlets I'd add ahead of it if I need more.
Animate Dead is usually a good one. Cheap cost and works on any graveyard. Necromancy is also an option with it's possibility of temporary instant-speed tradeoff. I don't think I would use Exhume unless I built around it a bit.
Do you use Reanimate often?

But also, as far as in-game handling, a Wydwen, the Biting Gale permission deck, or even this Phelddagrif deck would be an excellent foil to keep them in check.
