I'm trying to create a deck around protection and pariah type effects. The plan is to stall with Beloved Champion/Dawn Elemental/Voice of All/Pristine Angel + Pariah/Entangler, and then win with the big guys/Luminarch Ascension.
Ya it is. I was playing back in 6th and 7th grade and then for some reason lost interest. A couple years ago I moved to a small town where at the Hobby shop they have Friday Night MTG. I went once out of curiosity to see what the game turned out like, and ended up meeting a lot of cool people. In turn I eventually got sucked back in to the game.
Pre-release tournaments are basically just huge scale drafts, with a number of rounds depending on the participants. They usually happen a couple weeks prior to the sets being released. If you haven't played one before, in a draft you open a pack, take 1 card and pass on the rest. Then you accept cards from another person, take 1 and pass on the rest, etc. During this process you collect what you think would make a good deck, and then play it against others who made decks on the fly just like you. This way no one has any serious advantage, other than knowledge of the set before arriving. If you get into the last few rounds of the Tourney you usually walk away with extra booster packs.
Worst case senario you get to keep your deck, extra cards, and a cool foil promo. You get to read and play-test with the expansions before the public can buy them. Not to mention you get to trade with /meet people all over your area that play.
Does anyone know of any Mac software that can help me keep track of my MTG inventory. I started using MTG Studio (for windows) through parallels, but it lags, and it's annoying to have to boot up windows every time I want to make a trade with a friend, or have access to my lists.
Anything that I can use to easily keep track of my cards, trades, and sales would be great.
Thanks,
Bame
Ps. & please don't say something stupid like "get a PC like everyone else".
Intro decks are never a bad idea in my opinion, they're actually pretty cheap considering some of the cards they give you for the price, and they give you a theme to develop upon. I find I learn the most about the game when trying to streamline deck ideas. Find something you want to accomplish in a deck, and then go to Starcitygames.com, and use the advanced search tool to find cards that would work with your theme. Then after doing your own research, you can come here and post your deck list in the appropriate forum to get advice from more experienced players.
I'm kinda like you in the way that I came back to MTG recently after a 15 year break.
As for what's happened in MTG while you've been out? It seems the game has developed many new cool abilities, like Ripple, Landfall, Retrace, Clash etc. Also in my opinion the cards are less broken (in the big picture), but still really powerful in played in their element. For example, you won't find new cards like Ancestral Recall, but you will find stuff like Deathbringers Leige.
If you're not looking to spend a ton of cash beefing up your collection, my advice would be to do a pre-release tourney or maybe buy a box of one of the better sets like M10 to get some of the newer cards. Then expand and develop your collection by doing smart trades. I think trading is part of what makes this game fun anyway.
I'll have all the cards for the most recent decklist by Wednesday or Thursday. I'm willing to add more mana since everyone seems to think I'm short. I did trade for another Noble Hierarch tonight, so now I have 2!
I'm wondering though, what the heck do I take out to make room?
Thanks for the tip with the Pillars, I'll keep an eye out and try to find a play-set.
I'm not sure I really need more lands. Almost everything in the deck is 1-3 mana, with Stoic and Seedborn being my highest at 4 & 5 mana. I do agree it'd be nice to get either Birds or Hierarch in here for acceleration, but what would I be able to take out? I've already ditched 4 of my original card draw.
Edit: I just traded for a Noble Hierarch tonight, hurray!
I saw Noble Hierarch when constructing this and thought he'd be great - the only problem is my budget. I don't need to be super cheap with this deck, but this guy is over $40 for a play-set. I could find Birds of Paradise for cheaper, though I guess I would be missing out on some exalted. :\
I like your recommendation of Qasali Pridemage, that is really smart.
I also just discovered the card Ancient Ziggurat, and because almost all non-land cards in this deck are creatures, they should work well. I've already traded for 3 of them.
4x Beloved Chaplain
4x Dawn Elemental
4x Voice of All
2x Pristine Angel
4x Baneslayer Angel
1x Reya Dawnbringer
1x Iona, Shield of Emeria
4x Pearl Medallion
Enchantments
2x Entangler
4x Pariah
4x Luminarch Ascension
4x Swords to Plowshares
Land
2x Emeria, the Sky Ruin
20x Plains
I would like to stick with this theme, but also somehow be competitive in Legacy. Please help me refine my deck!
Suggestion:
*"Decks" need a section for comments and ratings

Next -> Pre-release.
