107.4b Numeral symbols (such as {1}) and variable symbols (such as {X}) represent generic mana in costs. Generic mana in costs can be paid with any type of mana. For more information about {X}, see rule 107.3.
No drawbacks are need tbh, they can be fetched just by one color of the fetch and offer just the ability to tap for colorless, nothing particularly op.
They changed the colors mana at one point, transitioning form "add x colorless mana to your mana pool" to the current worfing "add X to your mana pool" and now they are changing it again to "add {<>} to your mana pool" it doesn't seam absurd or outlandish and clears up the problem of new players getting confused between generic and colorless. Withe the new symbol new design space opened and they could put a colorless requirement on a spell, all in all not a bad choice at all, and much more reasonable to use something like the snow which was just bad, and not practical.
You are forgetting Kozilek's casting cost.
What does it say?
It says 8<><>
This clearly separates Eldrazi/Void mana from Colourless mana.
These people in the "magic set editor community" are wrong. The fact that the generic mana symbol pulls double-duty to represent colorless mana is confusing to new players. If we change to clearly show that colorless mana is not generic mana, that reduces complexity, it does not increase it except for old enfranchised players, but NWO is mostly intended for new players.
I'm not sure what you are getting at with "Generic" mana. Do you mean Colourless mana, Coloured mana, or Eldrazi/Void mana?
When I mention Colourless Mana Symbols I mean the very thing I described that Eldrazi/Void Mana to be. Something that can pay for and be paid by colourless mana, and cannot pay for nor be paid by coloured mana. I'm not referring to regular colourless mana having a symbol representing it but rather I'm referring to a derivative of it like Eldrazi/Void mana currently is.
I would think that Eldrazi/Void Mana would be pretty self explanatory in how it is applied. It can pay for and be paid by colourless mana, but cannot pay nor be paid for coloured mana. Remember that the entities which use this mana are the Eldrazi, and they are inherently colourless. However this mana is definitely different from colourless in that it requires its own symbol. Thusly, one can deduce the above.
It's also interesting to note that many in the Magic Set Editor community have long since discarded the idea of Colourless Mana Symbols (Eldrazi/Void Mana) along with the Multicoloured Mana Symbol because they complicate more things than they give benefits to, defying the principles laid out by New World Order. If a player can't get a mana type the moment they see it, than there is a problem with it, and it must be accurately described in the rules text of that card.
I have made a lengthy article doing a critical analysis on Eldrazi/Void Mana, along with some additional information that others may enjoy reading about the history of Wastes, "Barry's Land" and the never released set "Spectral Chaos".
Templates are made from high quality scans. There two ways to achieve what I think you want.
1). Use a pre-made template and just uncheck the layers and effects that you don't want until desired results.
2). As stated by willows... Use a real magic and paint over the stuff that you don't want until desired results.
As for the high quality non-scan images, I'm not sure if you are referring to templates or art used in templates. If its the art, a simple google search will get you what you want. If you were referring to templates, then the options are stated above. Unfortunately, wizards of the coast does not print or run blank cards, unless you find one as a rare misprint. Hope this answers your question.
Okay, I say non scan because scans cannot be used. Scans are so the templates will not match what I need and removing the shading is difficult.
It is about 3 days worth of fiddling around with a MSE template, trying to make it high quality. However, you can clearly see where the MSE template fails, such is why I need a place that holds high-quality non-scan images. I'll need about ... 50 or so images to be able to effectively work on the few projects I have planned. Google images, no matter how much I look, only gave me about 7.
I do not want to use existing templates because they do not serve the purpose I'm looking for. I need to be able to make my own templates as there are many formats and styles along with specific shading, beveling and embossing that need to be altered. But in order to do this I need to figure out a way to remove the text, keep the background, without having to paint the background as that will result in a loss of quality, and is noticeable.
How does one make a template from scratch? I need to be able to get the text off of a card image while still keeping the background intact. Similar thing with removing the shading, beveling and embossing on the outlines of the template while still keeping the original template colours. Where would one get the high-quality nonscan images?
How are you guys making your own templates? I have no idea how to extract the frames from a card image, or even where to get high quality images. The biggest issue is removing the bevel, emboss and text from existing card images to have a flat image, I really want to be able to do more stuff with higher quality pictures without being stuck with someone else's frames.
Guys, do oyu know what is the font the WTC using for the MAGIC on the card's back?
i need it for reasons
The font for "Deckmaster" I can almost guarantee to be Kelt. I'll look for the others momentarily.
Edit: Some quick searches revealed to me that the main font for the word "magic" is WotC using a heavily modified commercial use font called "Satan's Minions".
Edit 2: So it wasn't Kelt for "DECKMASTER" ... however that was pretty darn close and you can probably find something if you do derivative font searches of Kelt.
Edit 3: For old outdated fonts not used anymore, look for Goudy Medieval ... I'm still looking for the font for "the gathering".
Ironkovacs explained how the Wizards create a text on cards like this:
I'm not sure what you mean by "to get a clear card with no text"?
We use a multi-layer .psd (or .xcf for gimp)templates, and manipulate with them by changing layers in various ways, turning off/on, etc.
As a final step, we export render from .psd file by saving work as a .jpg or .png file, leaving multi-layer .psd file for next projects.
No flattening / merging layers. All changes in the final image is achieved by manipulating source multi-layer .psd file.
I want to know how to remove the text, but keep the background intact on any image. I don't want to use an existing template as that doesn't help me when I'll need to do things by hand or do alterations that the template didn't grant me.
Further, notice the indents and raised portions of the card frame? I want those all gone, ie: Make the card flat. But in order to do that effectively and properly I need to first remove the text.
The cinesee style siege is awesome, and a hint: use 1-2p white stroke on black and black stroke on white texts bor better visibility if there are some atr behind the text.
For fonts: you can find them at Kentu's mediafire folder. Rules text are MPlatin and flavors are MPlatin itallic.
Keep up your work!
Looks like I got the rules text right, but if the flavour is MPlatin itallic, that makes things so much easier.
As for the text to make them more legible, it is much easier to apply an outline/glow to the text.
Any tips on how to get a clear card with no text? I have no idea how I'm supposed to get a blank card.
Hello all, decided to join just to have access to this thread. I started making digital renders a few days ago from scratch and was hoping to get feedback on the first renders I've ever done.
Besides the "not for sale" section which I'll add to the images in due haste, the biggest thing I was wondering was the font for everything, as that took me a while to figure out which fonts were the ones used. I still have to find the flavour text font, which is my going to be needed in my rendering an entire deck based off of Nausicaa within a week or so from now.
Another thing I was wondering is, for those of you who work on the templates, how do you clean up the text from an image to get a clear template? I'm going to be flattening out all the sections of the card images so that way I don't have irritating pre-placed shadows, bevel and emboss to deal with, but in order to do this I need to figure out a reliable method to clean up text.
And finally, where would one find really good quality card images that aren't discoloured scans to use for templates?

It is hosted over at "The Meadery" and/or "Tappedout.net". The Meadery one is far easier to read.
