Oh, one thing I forgot to mention about why I picked up Merfolk:
We tend to have shorter matches, so at a GP, you don't suffer from as much mental fatigue as the strategies/decks that can go to time. Plus, having time to eat between matches is a plus as well.
Us? Not very likely, since the next block is Innistrad. I can only hope that we will get another Summer set (a la Conspiracy or Modern Masters) with a Lord of Atlantis reprint with correct oracle text and creature type (one does not exist), hopefully with new art in the same vein as Master of the Pearl Trident, Harbinger of the Tides, or Master of Waves.
Same as the rest: I like aggro, tempo, and control all rolled together. Plus, at the time, it was a budget deck (biggest regret was selling the deck when I got bored of it. I realized what a mistake that was and had to re-buy everything after their prices had gone up )
I was wondering if a Nykthos would be a consideration to add to our mana pool? Just wondering
I tried it as a way to jam Cryptic Command's into the deck (favorite card in modern and had a playset of textless ones with the merfolk hand) and utilized Coralhelm Commander to use up all that mana. It was sub-optimal at best (though the deck did take me to the semifinals of a GPT, where we all drew because none of us were actually going to go to the GP).
Instead of a new card, is there something from Legacy or Vintage (besides the obvious True-Name Nemesis) that could a) actually have a chance of being printed into a current set and b) help us?
I had been toying with the idea of a Sword in the SB in the past. Which would we play? SoFaI for more damage and CA? SoLaS against burn and for more resiliency? SoWaP for general speed?
I like 7th ed because it just looks BA, but I agree he does not stand out against the background as much as he should. The Timeshifted one is easier to use/for opponents to read and understand.
I like the inclusion of different options, though they can maybe be organized into a "rogue" category or something. Making sure they know that mono-U is the strongest version is important, but don't cut them off completely from experimentation. When I first started with the deck, I was trying different possibilities (Cryptic Merfolk, dat textless though!), and that is what engrossed me with the deck. This could just be me though.
Also, finally some love for the Greg Staples LoA!
Also, looks like I won't be playing in the GP this weekend player cap was hit before I could register. But I plan on doing some side events, so I will try and report back with some results!
I think Chalice of the Void is underrated in the current meta. I used to run it in my sideboard, and I've considered running it mainboard a few times. Anything that keeps the Lightning Bolts away while hosing the likes of Affinity and Elves is welcome in my book. That said, it's a bit of an awkward play in games where you don't get an opening hand Æther Vial.
How many would you suggest is the correct number to main then? And any more in the side?
Give those guys with Chalice maina bit more credit please.
They don't play it because they come from legacy. They play it because it works good for them. They are actually winning with it, so there has to be some merit doing so.
Not saying that isn't the case. Just that is a common practice in Legacy that is find it's way over into Modern. If I had the Chalices, there is a good chance I would be running them this coming weekend at the GP.

LEGACY is another story though.

1-3 CMC
Creature - Merfolk Wizard
Flash
When Lulltide Mage enters the battlefield X.
2/2 or 2/3
X being another spell effect, such as a counter/mana leak, or a removal effect, or maybe even "target land is an island."
My PERSONAL pick would be some sort of Misdirection effect, but that's because that is my favorite type of spell.
- Triple color protection on MoW
- Aggro/burn protection
- CONTROLLED card advantage
That last one is the tipping point for me. Drawing a card is fantastic, drawing a lord or MoW after they have been removed is even better
A new art though would be fantastic.

Though, if I did main Chalice's, I think I might include a Nykthos or two, just to have more control over what X is set to.
