I think Chalice of the Void is underrated in the current meta. I used to run it in my sideboard, and I've considered running it mainboard a few times. Anything that keeps the Lightning Bolts away while hosing the likes of Affinity and Elves is welcome in my book. That said, it's a bit of an awkward play in games where you don't get an opening hand Æther Vial.

How many would you suggest is the correct number to main then? And any more in the side?

Give those guys with Chalice maina bit more credit please.

They don't play it because they come from legacy. They play it because it works good for them. They are actually winning with it, so there has to be some merit doing so.

Not saying that isn't the case. Just that is a common practice in Legacy that is find it's way over into Modern. If I had the Chalices, there is a good chance I would be running them this coming weekend at the GP.

    Probably another Legacy/Vintage hold over...

Though, if I did main Chalice's, I think I might include a Nykthos or two, just to have more control over what X is set to.

Wouldn't you want Dismember instead of Vapor Snag if your are main decking Chalice? They will most likely be on 0 and/or 1.

Agreed. I wasn't saying it's good as a general SB card, but if you for some reason know you are going to say a large number of mirrors, it may be worth it.

Without another lord though, that single lord isn't swinging, so the Assassin is free to kill other aggressors.

I actually tried the Cryptic Command builds when I first picked up the deck since the card was the reason I wanted to play modern at all and the textless ones have a merfolk hand XD. It works if you include Nykthos, but just makes everything else seem so clunky.

I won so many tournaments with 20 land that 19 was never in contention. No reason to change what works.
I could see myself side out a land against Path decks, for obv reasons.
The best Merfolk results in Modern were with 20 lands, someone corrects me if I am wrong (all GP top8, all RPtq (except Greece) and Wmcq wins...).

It is funny that my Legacy Merfolk has 21 lands without 4-drops and with free spells, so that makes me even less inclined to play 19 in Modern.

Heyyyyy, maybe that means Path should be our secret tech for the mirror match :p

I'm liking Nikachu's thinking that the 20th land is actually more of a spell, so a Tec-Edge or Ghost Quarter main deck is not a bad idea, especially if you are on 8Seas/mana denial. Obvious Tec-Edge is better in that case.

Refreshing myself on the SB/land discussion we were having a page or two back, and another thought dawned on me: How do we feel about the U/X filter lands? Specifically U/W and U/B?

They get around the problems of ETB tapped lands like Seachrome Coast, doesn't reveal any information to our OP (as someone mentioned as a small concern), and the U/B one can help with Dismembers as some people would like without using Darkslick Shores or Watery Graves.

Is the fact that you need to have another U source too big of a detriment to their usefulness?

Yeah. That's why I'm more disappointed in my own ineptitude as opposed to being legitimately pissed off at myself about it. It could have been MUCH worse.

Nope. Last one was shipped today. I went to check the tracking on all of them and that's when I noticed Frown Thankfully the person at the campus mailroom remembers me, so I think I'll be able to either have them forward to me from there (something they don't usually do), or if worse comes to worse, I can make the two hour trek up there to get them the day before.

    *sigh* ordered
    1x Cursecatcher
    3x Silvergill Adept
    4x Merrow Reejerey
    1x Lord of Atlantis

on eBay to finish my deck off for GP Pittsburgh in two weeks... forgetting that my default shipping address was still listed as my university address that I graduated from back in May -_-

After watching Nikachu's video, I'm wondering: If, for whatever reason, someone wanted to cut 4x Cursecatchers from the list, what other cards could slot in to fill those holes? Not necessarily replacement EFFECTS, mind you. Phantasmal Images? More disruption?

Thanks for the input, both. I will definitely try out some of those suggestions.

Though I will point out that Remand does not work on Jace's pseudo-flashback like it does on actual flashback.
