So I’m turning to towards Nimble Obstructionist lately because it is the extra reach, shoal on 3, and a speed bump for the bigger decks in the format; namely Tron and control variants. Currently wrestling around with numbers and what it replaces and stuff. Anybody have any experience with it here? Any advice is appreciated Smile

Has anyone tried utilizing Lazotep Plating yet?

I don't think so! Wouldn't be half bad, but we have to think what we're playing it over and why. So like, Simic Charm is probably the closest comparable card to this. There's positives and negatives here and there. Probably worth some testing Smile

Thanks dude! I really appreciate the message Smile it'll be a great starting point to work into RUG from UG.

Well Smile just wrapped up a weekend of magic playing delver and had positive results. Nothing stunning, but definitely nothing bad either. Played in three 3-round tournaments a day, Fri-Sun, and landed about 10-6 not counting any draws for prizes. Took home a couple booster boxes in prizes. I’d call UG a real deck.

I've noticed, through viewing some games on youtube, that delver seems far more effective when running Mishra's Bauble, since we can check out our next card, stack the triggers at our upkeep if necessary, and crack a fetch to remove any unwanted card from the top.

This is a fact. You can even do the math Smile sure, you're including artifacts that don't flip delver (bauble), but you're checking two cards instead of one. So you gain lots percentages with the bauble, and lose probably single percentages by playing it. When bauble and delver are on the field together, the flip percentages goes up to about 60% depending on your configuration.

Not exactly brainstorm territory, but it's a step.

EDIT: Which is why I think it's wise to max out on Goyfs and Mandrills with this plan. Get's Goyf huge, Feeds delve, and increases delver flips; ALL WHILE giving you card filtering in your gameplay. It's x4 in my list for a big reason.

I gotta say, I really like the idea of there only being 6 lands that actually tap for mana in your deck.

Yeah it's awesome. Not playing 3cmc cards and snap casters can really bring down the curve in your list. Makes me VERY aggressive. Been thinking about going to 5 here recently tbh.

maybe it's better to make them lose their turn 1 play and start playing the beaters like Tarmogoyf turn 2 and playing some Nimble Obstructionist.. I think this is better than playing a 1/1 and praying that it flips next turn..

I mean this is the LITERAL point of adopting disrupting shoal now. It's so you can do these things and still counter their stuff that matters.

It's pretty straight-forward. The deck is still in its infancy, but I'm crushing lots of decks with it. The idea with staying UG was to max out on the Shoal's usage, because I believe it's the reason to play the deck.

I feel like it's close enough to what people are playing on here to be apart of the thread Smile

@Grindor11 Shoals and Baubles? Can I see your list?

Yeah man! Here you go! It's not RUG, but rather just UG. Still Monkey Grow Smile been having lots of success with it, but it's by no means perfect. This is my list that I tweak and update. So if you save the link or whatever you'll always have my latest and greatest 75.

I've always found this deck very intriguing and I'm surprised it seems very popular on here, but I have literally never played against it in hundreds of matches. Disrupting Shoal seems like it would be great right now too, I tried it a bit in UW and it was surprisingly good and opponents never expect it.

Oh yeah. Shoal is where you wanna be right now. It's very very very good with keeping up and disrupting the linear format we live in right now.

I was playing against BG rock yesterday... T1: Fetch, Delver, Bauble, pass. He casts Fatal Push, I shoal, then crack Bauble to ensure a flying Scientist next turn. T2: Flip delver on another Shoal, Fetch and shock, Tarmogoyf, swing for 3, pass. He fetches and casts Bob which is Shoaled by pitching Simic Charm. T3: I draw Sleight of Hand and cast it looking for a Stubborn Denial, found it, bash for 7, pass. He tries to land LoTV, and it's met with the Denial and he just packs it up.

Needless to say, the Shoal allows us to wreck havoc on our opponents WHILE letting us keep our proactive gameplan. It's where you wanna be right now.

But yeah, As for Neoform, we're well positioned against it because we also have turn 0 interaction and counter magic on 1cmc, which is where it counts. But that deck does a LOT of cheating. I would not surprised to see it banned.

The way this deck plays is just all I want from Magic. Playing efficent creatures, interacting with the stack + the burn damage for the reach. RUG has it all!
I'll look into playing a second simic charm mainboard. The versatility is great.
As a starter with this deck I really liked Peek to gain information at op's end step. It gives me more chances to plan ahead.

    I can't agree enough! It's a great deck.

As for Simic Charm, I'm only on UG (not RUG), but that's a card I'm back and fourth on. It's everything our deck wants to do in a single card, but somehow it always is the most lack-luster of the available tools we have. With more you'll have that consistently. I think 2 or 3 would probably be as much as I go in RUG Smile

What are you guys's thoughts on a card like Deprive over Simic Charm's in a list? I kinda like the idea of having Force of Will in the form of Shoal and Counterspell in the form of Deprive. I just don't wanna lean too hard on counter magic...

I played with pteramander. The problem is that it's terribly slow. It doesn't grow until turn 4 on average. So all in all mandrills are faster. And it's graveyard dependant as our other threats (except for pyromancer for people who play it).
I wasn't satisfied and got back to mandrills quickly.

    You mean pterribly slow? :p :p :p

I think how good Pteramander is all depends on how quickly you're able to Adapt him. If you can Adapt him quickly, I think he could be a decent choice over Hooty. If not, I'd rather stick with Hooty because he doesn't require much babysitting. I haven't tested Pteramander at all yet, but I definitely would like to give him a whirl to see what his potential is. The maindeck would probably need more ways to burn through instants and sorceries.

I think there's also some consideration to the spell suite too. Even though my build is just UG, the fact that I'm on a set of Stubborn Denial is huge. Sure Stubborn Denial can be replaced with Spell Pierce, but the Pierce is just worse. That card puts in a hell of amount of work.

Again, I'm in favor of optimizing things, but it seems like there's a lot of give and take between the Pterry and Monkeys debate. Not just 100% benefit.

What we can change, though, is the velocity of the deck. Which matters, to say the least, in the current Modern.

This brings a tear to my eye. You're so right. Decks right now need to play catch up, and anything for us to gain velocity is probably a positive right now. It's worth at least a bit of exploration Smile
