A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

I've been thinking about it and I feel like an Egyptian theme could easily be swung without god cards. Having ainok, viashino, leonin, and aven as races present on the plane would allow wizards to aesthetically capture the feel of many of the Egyptian gods without actually creating god cards. This is not to say that gods and religion were not an important part of ancient Egyptian culture, because they were,I am rather saying that Wizards could create an interesting plane that is based off of, and feels, Egyptian while leaving out things that might make the plane seem overly similar to Theros. I do feel an Egypt plane would be a good place to brink back the curse subtype of enchantments though.

If these are real that's a pretty huge design jump. A whole sixth type of mana? That seems kind of like the fabled sixth color Maro said they didn't want to do. That said if these turn out to be real it will certainly be interesting to see whether all eldrazi require the new mana, and how that will affect deck-building.

From a storyline perspective though, Kozilek? Awesome.

The more people talk about it the more excited I'm becoming for an Egyptian plane, there's so many cool angles to develop on. I think I'd be happy with a water-plane, and Egyptian plane, Muraganda, or Valla. I'm definitely interested in planes like Khaladesh, just not as much as the other options I've outlined. And regardless of what plane we go to I'm down for squirrels, even on the water-plane Grin

Oh cool! Kind of sad to see that an underwater world isn't in the top ten but an Egyptian-themed plane would definitely be awesome, and would potentially make storyline sense since the next new plane will likely be about Liliana pursuing a demon, and Razaketh appears vaguely Egyptian. Thanks for the link.

Today in his article "Making Magic" Maro said that the next new plane we visit will be something players have been asking about for a long time, what do you thin this could be? My personal guess (hope) is that this means we're finally getting an under-water plane, but I could also see Muraganda (dinosaur world) and Kaldheim (Nordic world) as strong candidates. I don't use twitter or instagram so I have to say I don't really know what had been frequently requested. What do you think is the most likely setting for a plane that "players have been asking about for a long time"?

I got Kalemne, I'm going to build her as my first voltron deck. I'm going to keep some light giant tribal but the majority of the deck is getting replaced.

Well in that case it sounds pretty good and yeah Teysa's actions and motivations are fairly noble/positive.

Haha yeah that's true, but I think if we included the organizations they are leading too it would just become "Which Ravnican Guilds are more powerful than others" and I don't think that is necessarily the same as the power ranking of the respective leaders. For example, while Rakdos is more powerful than Aurelia, I think the Boros guild as a whole is more powerful and influential than the Rakdos guild.

I'm glad people generally like the ranking. I agree that Lazav and the Obzedat are kind of difficult to gage. The way I'm looking at it is in terms of personal ability and powers they have access too. For example, Trostani summoning elementals or the Obzedat activating whatever of their enchantments create the merciless eviction are ok because those are abilities that those characters have access to on their own. Aurelia getting legionaries to help her or Zeganna releasing some giant mutant would not count because they are enlisting the help of other guild members. If either of them could spontaneously summon/create soldiers/mutants that would be different. That said, we really haven't seen what Zeganna is capable of, and she may very well belong at least above Borborygmos.

Kalemne. Going voltron w/ some light giant tribal left in it. I only have 1 other commander deck and it's Sultai control under Tasigur. This way I'll have 2 commander decks encompassing all 5 colors, one control and one kind of voltron midrange.

After the Obzedat embarrassed Teysa in this most recent UR I got to wondering just how powerful the various guildleaders are,in general and in relation to each other. This is not taking into account the paruns of guilds where the parun is no longer an active leader. Factoring in physical power, intelligence, and magical ability I would say they rank out somewhat like this:

    1. Obzedat: Clearly very powerful, unkillable since they are already dead, and apparently exempt from the binding laws of the guild-pact.
    1. Niv-Mizzet: A hyper-intelligent dragon, likely the smartest being on Ravnica
    1. Rakdos: Regardless of whether his followers are correct in believing he can destroy Ravnica if he so chooses, he killed both a nephilim and Kraj and only needed a nap to get better. He is clearly extremely powerful.

    2. Trostani: The real power here is Mat'Selesnya, but Trostani is sort of a conduit of that so I feel she has a lot of weight to throw around if need be.

    3. Isperia: Gigantic sphinx, so physically she has that. I don't feel like we know much about Isperia tbh but I'm assuming she's a powerful lawmage in addition to her physical abilities.

    4. Lazav: Although physically unimpressive compared to the guild-leaders preceding him, his shapeshifting, cunning, and knowledge of other guilds puts him higher than he might otherwise fall.

    5. Aurelia: Other than zeal and the support of the legion, I don't think there's really anything separating Aurelia from any other firemane angel in the Boros, this still makes her a force to be reckoned with, but not I feel on par with those listed above.

    6. Jarad: Hard to kill as a lich, he's also a powerful necromancer who was a skilled warrior/bounty hunter in life. Maybe not enough to take on any of those above but stronger than the two remaining.

    7. Borborygmos: Giant cyclops, big, strong, not much else. Certainly a powerful and skilled warrior but that's not always enough.

    8. Zeganna: Very intelligent, and probably a gifted biomancer, but on her own I feel she's far and away the weakest of the bunch.

What do you guys think? Does this seem like a fair assessment of the guildleaders? This isn't so much a "who would win in a fight" as a "on their own merits and infrastructure who is objectively most powerful"

Guys everyone is allowed their opinion. Regardless of how poorly she is written I still like the new Nissa character, and i know others at least tolerate her too. That said if someone thonks her getting killed by Garuck is funny that is also totally ok. We're all just killing time till Tamiyo and Tybalt become the primary characters XD

Yeah I can definitely see her as not red, and the green makes sense with everyone else's interpretations.
As for next week I'm kind of hoping for Kalemne. Iroas is one of the gods who generally seems to favor humanity, and especially Akros, so I'm curious to know if Kalemne is friendly to Akros or if Iroas just made an exception for her because she was so skilled in battle.

This one was good, I was kind of hoping we'd get more information on all of the commanders but this way we got one in-depth story for one of them. On a side note, while I liked the story I didn't really like Meren very much. I feel like in every character who is a two-color combination of black and something else the black is always dominant and they're evil. What about Meren's character or mechanics are green?

Recently built and played around w/ a Zada, Hedron Grinder deck that plays mana dorks and wisps for massive CA and mana production. It can win on turn 4 w/ Increasing Savagery. It usually doesn't but it can. I feel like Zada can spawn some pretty cool brews though.
