Maybe there are only 10-15 regular thread contributors, but they contribute a lot of great content. They don't need to be constantly swatting away mentor lists or lists with 23 land and tasigurs main.
The people who DO post here post a lot, so it's pretty clear that most of this thread's participants are HAPPY being with 56/60 cards of each other. It's because we are focused, and changing the title of the thread will help KEEP it focused without trailing off into mentor-land or whatever else. If people weren't happy talking about the same 56 cards, then you'd see significantly less posting going on here.
I know that myself, I personally avoid the thread whenever there is a flare up of midrange people or anti think twice stuff going on, because we've all read it before and it's tiring. Lately we've all been talking about neat tech and sideboard options and I feel like morale is generally high.

CODY X: Calling you out as I've finished going over the results of the thread title-change poll, and you're the only one of the three no-votes who's actually a participant in this thread. Please, give us your thoughts on the thread change. I want to have a productive discussion about it before moving forward, because I don't want to in any way, shape, or form alienate players who are productive members of the discussion.
Alright, I understand I'm the minority, and this is likely to go forwards without my agreement. I don't have too large of a stake here, its not incredibly important to me, but I'll pitch my side here.
Let me paint a picture. Some unknown player, who plays modern in this store comes up with some sweet brew. Hes got some kind of lingering souls + forbidden alchemy + esper charm + tasgur + planeswalkers kind of thing going. He's solidly in control though, with logic knots, murderous cuts, a verdict, and cryptics around, just more of a tapout version. Its a pretty neat deck he just came up with, and in testing, hes been wrecking his friends. He's in luck here, because he's just in time for grand prix a few hours away! He decides to attend with his friends, bringing his new creation. He gets 3rd. He's beyond pumped, he's come up with this new awesome deck and gone to the top of a major tourney! He comes back home, during the card ride home his friends have been listening to him talk their ears off. Its midnight now, and his friends are all tired out, and are done with magic for the night. But our friend here got 3rd, and hes still wide awake. He decides to see if anyone online has started talking about, or is interested in, his deck. He heads on over to old mtgs, and sets up an account. He looks through the modern forums, and finds esper midrange, but thats not quite right, and the lists aren't similar to his. He finds esper draw-go, but hes playing tap-out, and all the board wipes, white suns, think twices turn him off. He debates making a new thread, but his excitement has worn off, and he goes to bed.
Now this may never happen, but the scenario is quite reasonable. I think we would all like to talk about such a list, and may even do so without him. His input and thoughts would be great to have though, as 3rd in a GP would be quite the result for this type of deck. While too many people here post the same ol "I have geists and mentors and thoughtseizes, I'm playing control!" and we turn them away, I think what actually constitutes control is rather lose. Thoughtseize, lingering souls, and tasigur are all reasonable cards to play together. They could all end up in the same deck and still be in a control deck. I could go build one right now if I really wanted to. Its no less valid (and in modern, perhaps more valid) than 56/60 identical lists we've got going around here. While this new guy might not change all of our minds, there are really less than 10-12 of us who post here very often. This is a primer/archetype thread, and I think all kinds of actual control should be posted here. Again, mentor-based midrange has its own thread no one can seem to find, and those lists don't belong here, but just because someone is playing mentor doesn't mean they can't be playing control (though most of them aren't, it is possible) and just because someone isn't playing a wafo-clone, doesn't mean they aren't playing esper control.
I, for one, love to build decks. I use these forums as all sorts of inspiration for all sorts of decks. If this thread becomes only draw-go, I think its unlikely anything more than the occasion tech-card will be added here for variation, and I think thats a real killer for keeping people interested/coming to this forum (assuming thats what we want, which I do think it is).
And suddenly this is an essay, and it probably reads like ashiok's stream-of-consciousness, but there it is. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

PS. I seen 3 other Esper Control decks already!

Round 1 vs. Kiki-Cord (2-0 win)
This was a matchup against a close friend of mine and so I've played it quite a few times. Esper is highly favored because it comes down to a grid-fest usually and we can draw cards for days. In fact, in game 1 I won with White Sun's with 7 cards left in my library. I was able to Snap-Cryptic to counter/ bounce Snap 3 times. In game two I won with a swing with Colonnade with 0 cards left in my library. The best card in this match up was Sphinx's Revelation. It stabled my life total well assuring my enough card-advantage to close out the game.
Round 2 vs. Abzan (2-1 win)
A classic Abzan shell with Lilianas, Rhinos and Lingering Souls. An interesting inclusion was Anafenza, the Foremost.
Game 1 I lost because I was not able to get the colors I needed to cast all my spells.
Game 2 was a bit iffy. It started out well when he Thoughtseized me showing only lands and a Think Twice/ Lingering Souls. He brought the beats with Treetop Village and Anafenza until I was at 3. I Sphinxed for 6 finding the Path for Anafenza and the the Ghost Quarter for the Village. From there I was able to stabilize, Cryptic Commanding anything he tried to play.
Game 3 I was able to wipe the board twice after blocking his Tarmogoyf for 4 turns with Lingering Souls tokens. I killed his Liliana with a Colonnade after he minused it to make me sack another Souls token then Sphinx to secure the game.
Lingering Souls as a 3-of proved really good in this match-up and Sphinx was great yet again.
Round 3 vs. Tron (0-2 loss)
My worst nightmare: Tron. My sideboard is not ready for this match-up yet and I got steam rolled game 1. Game two I had him down to 8 with 2 Spirits and Snap on board. He found the O-Stone to stop me from killing him and then proceeded to cast 2 Ulamogs and I lost.
Lingering Souls was pretty good here in providing a quick clock, but was not enough.
Overall I was happy with my play and look forward to the next tournament. Lingering Souls preformed better than expected (but doesn't mean that it is better than other options).
