    Huh, haven't considered that...

If cards like this keep coming along, we may need to create an "honorary reserved list".

So, if you haven't seen it yet, we have more information on that walking dead secret lair that was teased in the Zendikar video a while back https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/walking-dead-shambles-secret-lair-2020-09-28

According to that source, we are going to be seeing mechanically unique (AKA not godzilla-style "re-skins") cards that are legal in eternal formats (AKA black-bordered), though the secret drop will be open for a full week so getting a copy if you want one shouldn't be the biggest problem (if it's worth the cost of $50).

Not sure how to feel about a tiny handful of mechanically unique cards being sold directly to us from Wizards for a bigger price than a commander deck. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Edit: Here is an article with one of the cards inside. Can't find the Entertainment Weekly article yet.

I'd definitely recommend against group hug, it is generally seen as a fairly obnoxious playstyle and when you add that to the fact that the average player becomes irrationally livid when you take their stuff you're going to get hated out of games extremely quickly. Taking someone else's cards is probably EDH cardinal sin no.1, above MLD even. Like, no joke, the only reason Expropriate is playable is the fact that people would rather give you an extra turn than one of their permanents so 90% of the time it reads 'Take 4 extra turns' for 1 less mana than Time Stretch.

If you're going to make an annoying deck you're either going to want to make it control-heavy to counteract all the hate, or build something innocuously durdley in order to shake off some heat.

Like... 'Oops, all Clones' Sakashima with a few Control Magic effects is probably fine, since copying isn't frowned upon and the deck generally won't be able to do anything better than catch up to the player in the lead.

...I think that this might be meta-dependent.

I've played against several "gain-control" type decks (including Memnarch, Sen Triplets, Empress Galina, and a deck that packs Keiga and a bunch of clones) without an ounce of salt from the table and the few times I've seen expropriate resolve, I have only seen a non-caster choose time once.

    It’s happening tomorrow

and man by the tweet and the fact it’s to be immediately removed from current leagues first time in years we might see a ban as fast as memory jar potentially

    In standard, you mean.

Banning Lutri in Commander the day it is spoiled will forever be the fastest ban that any card has or will ever receive.

Looks at chainer, dementia master, one of the better MBC commanders from over 10 years ago who reanimates to the field without CMC restrictions and creates infinite loops... costs $4-5.

Looks at Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim, another solid Orzhov commander who slots nicely into aristocrats and lifegain and who has been out for 5 years... costs $1.50

Soo... how much do you want to invest and how much do you think you can move? I don’t see making more than $2-3 profit per card in the future (at peak pricing) as particularly likely. Maybe if a new card is printed (like a cmc 1 cleric that can self-sac at sorcery speed to create an unearth effect) that allows for infinite combos, you might see a spike of sorts... but it’s still a matter of how many you could realistically sell.

Good removal incentivizes ETB/Death effects and creates a situation where any creature that dies to removal without benefiting you has no place... which is already kind of true most of the time.

What I would love to see, though, if only for the relative novelty, is a standard format where the removal is good but EVERYTHING “dies to removal”. No usable indestructible or hexproof on a stick, no good ETB/Death triggers, no good self-reanimating, no resilient control finishers. Everyone is forced to win by playing more threats than the opponent plays answers.

That last part is pretty much limited, where you play more creatures than the opp has removal.

...I guess? I want to see a standard where the answers are good enough that the metagame would normally be warped toward control... except that control lacks the quality of finishers needed to actually pull off their typical low-creature builds. I want to see where the equilibrium ends up going.

    1. How does this card cover color identity. The land is colorless and your deck needs to be commander legal even before “before the game begins” effects are present.

    2. If you want to kill combo and allow commander-centric decks that wouldn’t normally see play in cEDH, I would recommend letting each opponent search through your library for 4 cards and exile them. That would kill most combo strategies dead... unless you have a combo between the two commanders like Malira and Mikaeus.

The term 'mutated' refers to the keyword mechanic.

I don't think the typical person is going to question what that means, so long as they are familiar with the mechanic.

It's uhh...very coherent to read the term, 'mutated with'.

Whereas, using the descriptive term from the comprehensive rulings has no open relativity to the keyword mechanic, and thus isn't very coherent.

"Mutated with" would have been a decent term of phrase that WotC could have used... but they didn't... so you are wrong.

    End of story.

Letting itself come back permanently was the entire point of the card.

As I said, this is very much a Modern Horizons type of card in that it puts together mechanics in a way that just so happen to work.

    1.Blue happens to have unearth.
    2. Blue happens to have one of the few abilities that can get around the unearth “leave the battlefield” limit.
    3. Let’s put them together with the flavor of an Innistrad skaab.

Again, that was designed to be a functionally immortal 4/4 for 5 that can be cast from your graveyard, which seems pretty fair for a a sub-par rare.

Wanted to make a Modern Horizon-style card to look at a unique design that technically works.

Skittering Captor 3 mana blue mana blue mana
    Creature- Zombie Horror (R)
Whenever Skittering Captor attacks, you may exile target creature you control. Return it to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step.
Unearth 3 mana blue mana blue mana
    4/4

It's a 4/4 for 5 you can cast from your graveyard that has upside in a blink deck.

Honestly, it probably doesn't need to enter the battlefield tapped. Even without that text, this card doesn't generate mana for 2 turns and only starts accelerating 3 turns (and three creatures) later.

    Okay, to fully respond.

@WizardMN: Glad that one of our resident rules gurus can appreciate the role that Force Majeure has in utterly defining all future MTG cards. The final line of text on the card prevents the infinite loop from resolving in a tie as normal (requiring appropriate rulings to do so, of course), instead causing the game to end when one side surrenders. After hearing that this card should cost less, will make the mana phyrexian.

@Dodyshiratori: I am glad to see that you understand the proper place for criticism in the realm of force majeure. Hopefully, this thread can offer some healing for those in the community who do not fully comprehend this principle.

@Kryptnyt: Another excellent example of force majeure. Posting a brand new card without direct relation to the first without any actual commentary on the OP is an excellent emulation of the force majeure that we have been shown. Bonus points for you (and extra points for bacon).

@DJK3654: An excellent inspired reprise, though I might personally recommend starting a brand new thread that fails to provide a link to the original... or at least, I would recommend things if criticism was part of our creed.

@Rowanalpha: While those are excellent critiques with easily understood terminology that definitely has specific meaning in the discussion of MTG, I am unfortunately required by my creative process to argue that "a bunch" should be "a multitude" and discount the rest of the statement out of hand. You are of course welcome to argue this point for a few (dozen) posts if desired.

I personally feel that getting a full 10-land cycle of lands is kind of odd. On the one hand, having 15% of the rares in your set being desirable lands that are likely worth the price of the pack seems really, really good, to the point where some people would genuinely crack draft boosters... But wizards seems to believe that it's the splashy bombs that make limited environments excited, so...

Honestly, I wish that wizards would use their new set booster to fit in rares that wouldn't be exciting in a draft but that would be desirable. From niche anti-meta rares to dual lands and innocuous plants for old formats, there are quite a few cards that wizards could pointedly leave out of draft boosters to give a more refined and targeted limited environment while packing potentially good cards that don't draft well in set boosters (giving players a real reason to buy set boosters other than playing the lottery)... Unless that would just kill all interest in limited.
