The End of an Era

heyyas, about the same time frame for me. I think there's many that are returning to MTG from a long time away. I left the game right about the time of Mirrodin, I think I was getting bummed out at changes when MM came out. Had the most fun when green got a maga blast in Urza's block. then mono green was actually viable and fast Grin Back then mono black, G and B/G were my favs. Couldn't stay away for ever haha!
now, you just about have to play multicolor, so I'm building B/W/U, B/W/G and G/W decks, and missing having Dark Rit, Counterspell, ***, BoP, etc cards :_(

but wouldn't limiting this to mythics and rares will hinder it's widespread playing? there'll be some small effects from lesser cards, and no doubt there's gonna be a garbage rare with the ability that we wish was just an uncommon haha.

It's interesting to think what cards will come out with boons or negs based on types of cards in exile.

creatures that can return certain card types from exile. almost guaranteed
creatures that gain/lose from having x of a certain type in exile. very likely
cards that canNOT be removed from exile once put in. Maybe?? but unlikely
sorceries that enable exiling certain cards/types. guaranteed
instants that create a X/X creature from having X cards of type in exile. Woot! would luv this
enchantments that prevent certain conditions while in play and another totally different effect while its exiled. Unlikely
cards that have one type while in the battlefield and count as another once exiled.cool. maybe? but unlikely

I think the direction in the upcoming block is to explore what resources can add to gameplay from manipulating cards into, outof, and checks for what's there, but in ways that it doesn't just become another graveyard

is the game any less fun to play well-thought out decks than it was years ago? no! We have to be flexible with our design with the tools available in any format/block as it changes. Yes, i loved the fast paced turns especially around the Tempest and Urza block days; then we whined when things changed and every couple blocks later it was the same - more changes. But we still had some really cool rares and enjoyed seeing how we could combo or best beatdown opponents whatever the current card pool had. We're now having to think differently again, but still going to have a blast and even knowing things are changing, we're not dinosaurs, we're flexible, creative and competitive with whatever cards are available.

Some of you remember when t1 and t2 kills were the norm? Still playing to this day? You bet! haha We still cant wait to see whats new even if our deck design will not be possible in the next rotation. We'll just build new ones!

I just think there should be some new lands that really only have a temporary boon and a drawback that would keep you from building a consistently powerful ramp mechanic. a new sort of painland. I play exclusively STD and casual Urza's block games. I think I was also thinking about Rattleclaw Mystic at the time and thought 3 colored mana is too much, but 1 colorless + 1 colored from a land source would be nice. landwalk was also cool back in the day but seems it has fallen away. haha so maybe some form of exiled landwalk?!

here's new lands I'd like to see. not that great as to be off the hook, but adds something to the mix

[land] doesn't untap during it's controller's untap phase.

T: 1B use this ability only once per turn.
sac a black creature: untap Haunted Bogs.

T: 1R use this ability only once per turn.
Sheer Cliffs deals 2 damage to you: untap Sheer Cliffs

T: 1G use this ability only once per turn.
Target opponent puts a 2/2 green Treefolk token into the battlefield: untap Overgrown Brambles

T: 1U use this ability only once per turn.
Discard 2 cards, then draw 1: untap Desolate Archipeligo

T: 1W use this ability only once per turn.
