The amount of hate people give to others this thread is disgusting.

My shop runs full proxy Modern tournaments (already unsanctioned, mind you). They're there so people without enough money to buy a modern deck and attend the modern FNMs, but still want to play a different kind/flavor of Magic than draft or Pauper.

Yes, we could spend a ****ton of money onto Modern. But guess what, we don't want to because we got other hobbies too. So someone telling us we don't deserve to play modern in this case is just disgusting.

They don't deserve to play any more than I deserve to play Warhammer - another potential hobby that looks cool, but, because I already have a hobby in Magic, I can't afford. They don't deserve anything. Magic is a hobby, a luxury, and not an entitlement. It's a shame they're interested in something they can't afford. That's just life. If they can find a way to play high stakes poker without paying for it, they might be able to leverage this cheapskate spirit to fund their collecting.

This is the level of elitism I'm talking about.

I buy a lot of singles for my EDH at my LGS, I buy sealed products like Duel Decks to play with friends from them, occasional fat packs, I attend a prerelease for every single set that comes out, encourage people to come there.

And yet I shouldn't play proxy Modern. Because apparently I'm not already spending enough money on Magic and I'n a cheapskate.

I spend hundreds of dollars, probably thousands over time, on gas for my truck. I get oil changes. I take it to the dealership for maintenance whenever the check engine light comes on. Apparently I'm not spending enough for them to give me a sports car.

I spend hundreds of dollars on my cable bill, and yet I apparently don't deserve free HBO.

This argument is ludicrous if you swap out Magic terminology for any other. It's ludicrous here, too.

Not having a sports car doesn't prevent you from driving on the road.
Not having race car will prevent you from driving in a race track though.

The race track in my analogy would be top tier tournaments not smaller ones.

If WOTC really gave damn they would get rid of the reserved list. It's gotten to the point where this game isn't what it was then. The cards that are useful cannot be printed anymore and the remaining cards are just slowly dwindling over time. By making a print run of these cards, the originals would be lightly affected by the value as usually first prints retain value. It's just not worth spending that much money on cards that can be destroyed if something were to happen to them. It would grow the audience since playing with 2000+ decks wouldn't be an issue.

Magic is successful, at least in part, because there's no pretense that everyone deserves to play every format -- that everyone is entitled to be able to afford every card.

That's a pretentious attitude if I ever saw one. No one is calling for them to make legacy pre constructed decks with the best vintage staples. People are asking for better availability than there currently is. I think every format should be accessible to everyone. You might not be able to build the best deck, but definitely something serviceable.

Essentially you're putting classism into magic cards. Which for a tcg is just so utterly stupid. It's supposed to be a hobby. It should be up to the player based off preference not money on whether or not they can play in a format.

Oh look, WOTC is making another stupid decision that alienates more of their fans and customers, why am I not surprised?

Can you answer why WotC would allow proxies? Like in what way that would benefit them as a business or anything?

Well considering that they don't print many legacy/vintage staples anymore and many are on the reserved list they aren't hurt or benefited in any way. If they printed the cards still it may be an issue. All sales are on a secondary market and WOTC doesn't make any money from the format.

So they need to address the issue that these formats are very difficult to get into because cards have low supply and the only current way is to make proxies.

Interesting stuff. I come away feeling like I was right - they're punishing these players through DCI because they have no legal leg to stand on. It sounds like they spotted the leak on twitter and tried to backtrack to the source. This facebook group was as far back as they got. They tried to threaten these guys and roll up into the leaker, but it sounds like these guys have no idea where the leaks came from. When they couldn't help, bans all around. It's like when the high school principal sentences you to detention because you were in the area for a prank but can't/won't say who actually did the prank. I weep for everyone who could not read between the lines on this one. I weep for everyone who assumes that a corporation's investigation/appeals process is robust and fair.

I wonder if things would have been different if the leaker had just posted anonymously on reddit instead of sending it to a private group to check out.

    Judges = Human / Players / Community.
I feel WotC is being a jackass for their actions.

Maybe.. Just maybe.. This is the problem : "03:19 - There is a person inside Wizards who was the primary leak. He released the cards to a judge with whom he is a close friend."
It would have been more practical to penalize a WotC employee instead of a community judge (no matter how high of a moral standard others placed a judge on)?

"An employee of WotC is walking around naked"
What WotC says to 'players': Dont look!
What WotC says to 'judges': Clothed him!
What 'players' and 'judges' should say to WotC: Maybe you should stop your employee from walking around naked?
Now, what WotC says to 'judges': Its your fault not preventing my employee from walking around naked.

Wizards should go after whoever leaked the information internally but your analogy is just terrible. You're basically putting no blame on the judges. They leaked the information knowing full well that it's completely illegal.

    Employee steals merchandise
    Judge sells stolen merchandise

I think that analogy is better

Having (<>) in a casting cost would mean you would have to now play more lands to play cards that are colorless, defeating the purpose of colorless.
Also, you could argue that these are even worse than Snow-lands. At least those tapped for a color or a snow mana, while these only tap for colorless (if that is how they work). I really don't want cards that are worse than cards that were too bad to reprint ever again.

You wouldn't need new lands. Any mana rock that produces 1(colorless) currently would suffice. Or any land that currently also produces 1(colorless). They would actually produce <>. All this means is that colorless mana has a new symbol that is distinct from the generic mana cost symbol.

That is enough to be parasitic unless they print back Wastes in every set (which is unlikely as it is flavorfully very connected to eldrazis). Many sets have no colorless mana rocks at all, like Khans of Tarkir, Theros, RtR or Innistrad, and hardly any colorless lands. Colorless mana rocks have been a thing mainly in core sets and are not that common. It will not be functionally less parasitic to make that change or add a 6th color, it would require almost the same changes from now on.

How would wastes not be flavorful on a plane? It literally just land that doesn't have color identity. It's introduction to magic with Eldrazi was perfect but doesn't mean it's exclusive to them?

since he was rude first by not reading the discussion, why not?

I feel like maybe you've never read through over a thousand posts on MTGS before after missing the first few hundred. It's grueling.

Until they post the rules for <> people will strafe the thread, post their ideas, and leave.
its first mentioned on page 3. less then 100 posts. sorry, but what you say is no excuse

Not everyone wants to read every page of a forum discussion. You're literally being rude because of the fact that you think everyone should read everything. Even on page three you lose many readers and I wouldn't grind on someone for not reading that. Not everyone has the time to read everything and it's just stupid to get rude about it.

False. The words "strictly better" literally mean "better regardless of context." That includes random synergies. The word you're looking for is "better" (sans "strictly").

On topic: This looks powerful. While I'm not a fan of land destruction, I have to admit I sorta like this card.
    You are wrong.
"Strictly better is a term used to compare cards that are identical in most regards, and in each way they are different the same one is more favorable."
"The convention is well understood among experienced Magic players. However, those new to the terminology may complain that a strictly better card is not better in all situations than a strictly worse card."
"Strictly better” means in most obvious cases, one card is better than the other. A 2/2 flier for 2U is better than a 2/2 without flying for 2U. The fact that cards can kill fliers doesn’t mean this isn’t strictly better because the vast majority of the time a 2/2 flier is just better than a vanilla 2/2."
Striclty on MTG doesn't care about context, it just comparing the cards in a vaccum. The fact that there is another card that can make the other situationally better doesn't matter.

What makes me mad about the interpretation of MaRo is that people assume that cards are in a vacuum. That's not what he means at all. What he means and by given his example that even if there is a downside to a card such as a 2/2 flyer over the same cc 2/2 vanilla beater the advantage of having flyer far outweighs the disadvantages of flying destruction that it has an advantage over a vanilla. You'll never not run the flyer over the vanilla because it's just in your benefit to do so.

With this card, it is not strictly better to where it would make sense to not run it over sowing salts. It may have one less red in its cc but loses the ability to copy with goggles. Not to mention the colorless ability doesn't benefit the card design instead of saying a devoid shock. Now it's it a better card. Yes absolutely because it's more splashable. But not strictly better in the sense of bolt to shock, or alpha duals to shock lands. If it had a 3cmc or was red it would strictly be better.

Point in it all is that magic is not played in a vacuum. Maro never implied the term to mean that. There are contexts to cards where you can say they're strictly better or not, but this is not the case. It'd be like telling me that a 2u 3/3 elf is better than a 1gg 3/3 elf. (I know this is a stupid analogy but I'm trying to prove a point that comparing cards in a vacuum is stupid)

It is quite suspicious that the video name is in russian, yet nothing within the video itself is russian (decor, printed media, spoken words, etc).

Also, i checked via photoshop, the red card, the gold card and the artifact card all do have text. If you raise the contrast really high, you see that there's darker regions that correspond well with lines of text. The gold card and the artifact card have full text boxes, meaning 5 lines of text at least.

No dark central sections showed up, so i don't think there's watermarks on these cards (we just came from SOM block, and there's a rumored Rav 2.0 next year, so taking a break from watermarks would be a good idea for visual distinction.)

The original duels will be reprinted!!!!!??!?!?! [/joke] That's gotta be the message behind showing all those duels...

Maybe they'll have duals that involve the day and night mechanic? Like a land that taps for one color in day and one color at night? And they could have basic land type corresponding to what time setting it is in. Just speculation at this point.
But regardless, I just found that the cards seemed to all have a similar theme to them.

Did anyone find it odd that the guy had a lot of Homelands cards as well? I mean he had a lot of stuff, but the things that stuck out most in my mind were the duals and the homelands cards. And I know that Innistrad doesn't take place there, but maybe it's a hint that there will be themes or something from that set?

Well yeah....but 8 mana is a lot to not really make a big impact each time. I mean think about it, really. You're paying 8 to kill ONE creature when you could be:

    1:Playing a field sweeper
2:Playing a game ending fatty before hitting 8
3: Dropping multiple, much more effiecent artifacts
4:Playing cheap removal....there's a lot of it these days.

It's just bad. Student of Warfare is excellent. 3 is nothing for a 3/3 First Striker. 8 mana to kill a creature is terrible. Just flat out bad. It isn't a hard to understand why.

I agree that it's terrible in constructed formats. In a casual burn deck or such, where if you run out of gas late game and need something to handle board control. It's pretty good. I'm not even saying it's great for standard, but it's a fun thing to have in casual.

Oh come on now, you don't have to be a Standard only player to dislike the card. Slant It's twelve mana for damage to a single creature. It is pretty much objectively terrible. I'm a mainly casual TIMMY player and I think it sucks.

4 then 8. Not like you have to pay it all at once. Not really a great argument.
And Student of Warfare is 3 mana for a 3/3 First Strike. So it's a little above average.
