I would not put too much value on Painful Truths. I think it's already near its top value at 3$ for its run in standard. Once KTK rotates out with its fetchlands, decks that run 3+ colors should no longer be the norm, especially since colorless is a "color" of its own with OGW. Read The Bones is better in 90% of cases in 1-2 color decks, only moderately weaker in a 3 color deck, is a common and is still with us in Innistrad.
There may be some value in the long run, due to Modern, but cheap alternatives are plentiful.

Jan 16, 2016SpinifexV posted a message on The Magic Market Index: Set Review of Oath of the GatewatchI agree with the list on all but one count: Vile Redeemer. In a GB self sacrifice deck or a rally/aristocrat deck, it can mean getting a lot more tokens to sacrifice at instant speed. It's not an all star, but I could see it going to 1-2$ if he shows up in such a deck.Posted in: Articles

You should have seen the look of horror on his face!
So, until we get a card that says (<> must be paid with <>) or (<> must be paid with <> or colorless mana) or (<> must be paid with <> or 2) all of this is just nearly blind guesswork.
This has been fun nonetheless (except for people getting way too emotional over it), and I am looking forward to whoever gets to say "I told you so!".
Off to remake my deck now.
I would be inclined to believe <> means that only Colorless mana can be used to pay for a spell or an ability if it appeared only as part of a cost and not as part of mana generation. In the scenario that <> means colorless, there is no difference between a land that taps for <> or 1 and, thus, a change would not be needed there.
Which is also the case with #3 and without all the problems with limited and sealed formats or with past cards that suddenly get better (like Battlefield Forge) or worse (like Mana Confluence or Beastcaller Savant).
#3 I said it would probably be a hybrid mana: <> can be paid by <> or 2 (any colored or colorless). It is a way to reward players who make their land-base worse by including Wastes by making spells cost less, while still keeping the spell colorless. For example, in this scenario, a 2/2 that costs <> would be a great deal if you have a Wastes, and only a bear if you do not.
The thing I don't understand in #2 is "Why do we need to differentiate between generic and colorless mana?". If it is to make <> unplayable unless you have access to colorless mana, it is de facto a sixth color. Suddenly, painlands tap for 3 colors while basic lands tap for only one. In draft and sealed, it's the same thing: if you play 2 colors and add <> you are technically playing three colors. Yes, Hedron Archive and cards like these give you colorless mana, but mechanically, it would be no different than an Abzan Banner to splash a third color.
My guess is B, since it would reward players making a commitment to play Eldrazi and colorless cards (only those in Oath, unfortunately), without causing problems balancing problem with previous Eldrazi cards. They were looking for a way to make a colorless basic land for use in EDH and this is probably what they came up with.
Here's the decklist I'm thinking about:
4x Battlefield Forge
4x Bloodstained Mire
2x Caves of Koilos
2x Mountain
4x Nomad Outpost
2x Plains
2x Shambling Vent
1x Smoldering Marsh
1x Swamp
3x Wind-Scarred Crag
Instant (13)
4x Crackling Doom
4x Draconic Roar
1x Murderous Cut
1x Utter End
3x Wild Slash
1x Dragonmaster Outcast
3x Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury
4x Seeker of the Way
4x Soulfire Grand Master
4x Thunderbreak Regent
Enchantment (3)
3x Silkwrap
Planeswalker (3)
3x Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
3x Duress
2x Outpost Siege
2x Painful Truths
3x Radiant Flames
2x Surge of Righteousness
2x Transgress the Mind
1x Utter End
It is also a way to make cheap colorless land available for EDH players and would allow WotC to make a colorless Commander 2016 deck.
The art seems very legit however...
The matches
Lessons: I will lower my curve again. Sarkhan the Dragonspeaker and Kolaghan's Command are too often dead cards in my hand. I've drawn Haven of the Spirit Dragon far too often in my starting hand and, since I need a heavy White and Red mana base, I'm cutting it. Anyway, my Dragons get exiled more often than killed. This is the new deck I'm building:
4x Battlefield Forge
4x Bloodstained Mire
2x Caves of Koilos
2x Mountain
4x Nomad Outpost
2x Plains
2x Shambling Vent
1x Smoldering Marsh
1x Swamp
3x Wind-Scarred Crag
Instant (15)
4x Crackling Doom
4x Draconic Roar
1x Kolaghan's Command
1x Murderous Cut
1x Utter End
3x Wild Slash
1x Dragonmaster Outcast
3x Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury
4x Seeker of the Way
4x Soulfire Grand Master
4x Thunderbreak Regent
Sorcery (2)
2x Painful Truths
Planeswalker (3)
3x Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
3x Duress
2x Outpost Siege
3x Radiant Flames
2x Surge of Righteousness
2x Transgress the Mind
1x Utter End
2x Valorous Stance
