I like Bob much more than flayers. If I were to play junk, I would play nobles and bobs and no flayers.
Its bad that this excludes Tasigur, but nobles do also exclude Tasigur basically, so Tasigur will have to wait for his time to come.

No way! Tasigurs time is now! Lol

I'd love to talk about unbans here and the implications about SFM, but it's against the rules

I will say I have 3x World Wake foil SFM's along with a foil Batterskull in my binder Wink

Lets say i created a solution

Guys is treetop village viable in our deck?

Just depends on how greedy you want to be with your manabase. I like having Gavony Township and Ghost Quarter in my 24 lands and cant afford to have my Stirring Wildwood not produce white mana. That being said, of the 24 lands, I dont see a problem with 4 manlands (2 vents, 1 wildwood, and 1 treetop)

Has anyone tried flaying tendrils out of the board? Seems great against dredge, and stuff like elves/merfolk. Even grabs etched champion.

Im a huge fan of the 3 mana wraths black offers. I was running 1 before I started running Voice of Resurgence. Now I am running Drown in Sorrow since I havent seen much abzan company or dredge also. Run it, and dont be shy.

I think Shriekmaw is worse overall now than BGH simply because BGH can hit both Death Shadow and any relevant Eldrazi creature, Shriekmaw can't. Specifically against Eldrazi, both are good, and for death shadow BGH is better. So that makes me lean towards BGH here (If I would run any of the two).

You bring up a good point. I forget because against the old deaths shadow deck, shriekmaw can kill swiftspear, steppe lynx, and goyf. Now it only kills 50% of the decks threats.

With the continued Eldrazi presence, has no one give any thought to Big Game Hunter in the side-board? With three 0r four Liliana of the Veil and a Collective Brutality or two, it shouldn't be too difficult to live the dream there, should it? With Liliana, the Last Hope in the mix, one could conceivable live the dream more than once per game.

Another interesting piece of technology I might try out is Suffer the Past. Anyone tested it already?

If you want a Big Game Hunter effect, you should go for Shriekmaw. I used to run it when Bant Eldrazi was "the best deck" and it was great. It fueled delirium and can be brought in other matchups like jund, burn, merfolk, elves, etc. This was before Fatal Push was printed so having an efficient removal spell was great that also fueled Grim Flayer. Point being, you can get the doom blade effect without the madness headache.

In terms of Suffee the Past, why not just run Nihil Spellbomb? It cantrips and can be done instant speed also.

Now there is list I would absolutely play, a list going 5-0 at yesterdays league:

I personally would probably change the landbase a bit, not a fan of the Ghost Quarter in this tight list, but thats me. Also like a 3/1 split of Lilianas, like I said. I think finally Bob can return in Junk in a quite effective way. What do you think?

It is weird seeing hierarchs in that list without flayers. That being said, at this point you can probably missmash parts of the deck and be fine. There are too many "good stuff" cards in abzan colors to fit in one deck and you cant go wrong just playing the certain cards you like out of those good stuff cards.

I never tried Lilly in the main deck, but whenever I bring out Abzan again I'll give her a try. I think at this point I'd cut voice unless something big like Jace or preordain come back into modern.

I agree that Voice is on the downswing but as of now, there isnt another 2 drop that I would want and Voice is still pretty relevant. He forces the opponent to either play sorcery speed or burn 2 removal spells. As of now, Ill keep him cause he hasnt been bad. Hes been at least above average which I cant complain about.

So I went 3-0 last night with my Non Flayer/Hierarch w/ Tasigur list. Beat Jund, Burn, and Mardu walkers. Some things to note:

Gavony Toenship is the real deal. Against mardu walkers, it allowed my 2 spirit tokens to provide a lot of pressure without overcommitting to the board. Also broke the lingering souls stalls. Ghost Quarter also took out a Shambling Vent and a Raging Ravine. Having access to Township and Gavony is way better than hierarchs.

Next, I was really conscious about when I had my Tasigurs and voice in hand whether I wish it was flayer instead. Nope. Tasigur was great like always. (Survives 4 ability chandra's minus ability) and drew me cards. Like actual cards, no filtering needed. Against Jund, voice just powered through 2 removal spells and let my other creatures stick.

Lastly, I tried out the 1 of Lilly Last Hope and yep, shes really good. I plused her to shrink goyf, bring back rhino, bring back rhino kill you. Unreal. Im starting to see why shes played in the main and so far, ill stick with her and my 1 of voice.

;tldr I like my Gq+Gavomy > Hierarch, Tasigurs and voice > Flayer, new lilly is amazing!

As of right now, this is what I will be testing.

The only slot up in the air is my 1 of Voice of Resurgence in the main. Still not sure what it should be yet. I am low on the 2 drops in my curve and 12 creatures seems right with the new lily. Another option could be a 3rd scooze but for now, Ill leave in the 1 of voice unless someone has some suggestions on a replacement.

About your first point about results: I think this is where it is very ambiguous. Of the Abzan decks that have been played at the GP, how many of them have Flayers and how many of them have Tasigurs? I would venture a guess that more than 75% of them are flayer builds just based on the fact that its the version the pros are running. That being said, it is not fair to say the Tasigur version isnt putting up numbers if it isnt given a chance to shine.

The same situation happened to Abzan as a whole deck prior to worlds. People always just played Jund and Abzan was always under represented because the pros played jund > abzan.

About your hierarch + tasigur point, you cant run both IMO. With Tasigur, you want every card to be a hit when you mill. When you have Hierarchs in your deck, you leave yourself vulnerable to bringing back a mana dork with tasigurs ability, which is not where you want to be.

I can see your point. Results of decks could certainly be different from what they actually are if people would play more the stuff they like rather than just plain copying. But for me, still, running Nobles does not only make sense in the "good result" matter. Nobles allows us to be simply faster and go under Eldrazi/Big Mana decks.

The way I see it: Right now, in a non Noble list you would ideally play your discard turn 1 and then drop a threat turn 2 (like a goyf or Flayer, if run). With Nobles, you get more chance to consistantly play a spell turn 1. Now, if you have discard turn 1 with a noble in hand, surely you want to still play discard first. But with printing of Fatal Push, we can still go with Noble on turn 2 and hold up push if we want to. This allows us to develop the board and hold up removal alonside. On turn 2, with noble on the field, you can go discard + CMC 2 threat, Lingering, Liliana, CMC 2 threat and hold up Push/Path or simply play discard/removal and hold up decay. Nobles allow us to sooner cast multiple spells a turn, from what point a GBx deck truly shines. This is after all a great tempo advantage, what seems to be a better strategy against Eldrazi than having to wait 1-2 turns more to deploy our threats against a deck that will throw a potential TKS at us as early as turn 2.

Now I don't want to talk about details here, my point is, that just by thinking about it, Nobles makes just sense in that meta. Its not only the good results.

I agree 100%. I was a huge proponent of the Hierarch Flayer build before Push was printed, you dont have to convince me about the effectiveness of hierarchs :P. However, the format as a whole slowed down a lot and trying to race with hierarchs isnt exactly what I want to be doing right now. On top of that, Tasigur provides a pretty damn good clock also vs those big mana decks.

The thing about it is, magic is very much a copycat league like the NFL is. The Wildcat offense was a fad and everyone ran it. Same thing here where LSV runs Hiearch + Flayer. The pros do it so thats the "correct" build.

This is often true, but not exclusively. Junk has not been run by any major pro lately and still, mostly Hierarch lists do well. Results do speak for themselves after all. For me, not the pro counts, but the result. If we are talking about winning, not about personal preference, than I think Nobles is the answer. Personally, you can run what you want. But this is just simple data analysis of the recent results we have got. And I think there is nothing wrong with it.

And to say, personal preference is definitely a thing what has an impact on the success of a deck. The way I talked about it though, was not implementing the statement "run Nobles and Flayers" or "run Nobles and no Flayers". The fundamental and most important thing for me is to simply run Nobles and its basic configuration (non creature spells and lands). Whether to run Flayers or not, is up to personal preference.

Why not run Nobles and Tasigur alongside? I think, if you want to run Tasigur, then you can't run both Flayers or Bobs effectively anyway. Doesn't matter if there is Nobles or not. But Tasigur can go alongisde Nobles I think.

@Spsiegel: I agree. I am cutting my 2 Voices main deck. I am going to go with 1 Liliana of the Last Hope main for one slot and am still devating over my last slot in the 60.

The thing about it is, magic is very much a copycat league like the NFL is. The Wildcat offense was a fad and everyone ran it. Same thing here where LSV runs Hiearch + Flayer. The pros do it so thats the "correct" build. This is where I disagree. Not to say Flayers and Hierarchs are bad. Like I said earlier, it will come down to personal preference and to say you should ONLY be running hierarchs and flayers is wrong. I still like Tasigur A LOT and I feel like if I had to choose between Tasigur + Gavony township + Gq or Flayers + Hierarchs, I would pick the former. Tasigur is still super good in the meta.

And the above situation isnt like the "dilemma" of do I run rhinos or flayers -> my solution run both. You cant run Tasigur and flayers together. Ive playtested a bunch of games and Tasigur and Grim flayer just feels so bad. Example would be you activate tasigur and your opponent brings back a card to turn off delirium. Or, when you delve tasigur, you want to rid the graveyard of bad cards (like discard). Yet, you need to leave a sorcery in the yard for delirium. Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

Overall I am glad that the flayer version is doing great. We havent had a finish like this from our deck in a while. However, just shutting the door on Tasigur and running Grim + Hierarch just because the pros do it might not be the best route, because IMO I like Tasigur more than Flayer. But again, it all goes down to personal preference.

What are peoples thoughts on Bitterblossom in the current meta? Seems like a possible main deckable card with Abrupt Decay numbers going down and Fatal Push going up.

So I went 3-0 last night. Didnt drop a single gamee vs Burn, Jund, and Elves. Overall, the VoR, Rhino, Tasigur creature suite feels good like really good.

Rhinos: I cant cut any. Currently running 3 and they provide that helix + trampling body that allows us to just plow theough for the win. So good.

Tasigurs: goyfs 5 & 6 and are so solid. Against jund, I IoK and see bolt, bolt, dreadbore, scooze. I take dreadbore (i have push, decay, and path in hand to deal with threats). I land a VoR, opponent wastes 2 bolts on him, then slam Tasigur aa my opponent draws another bolt and proceeds to lose. Which leads to...

VoR: hes the real deal. He does A LOT more in practice than in paper. Against jund, hes obviously amazing. Forces 2 for 1s. Against burn, they normally have free will to fling burn spells at the end of our turn. Now they have to mainphase their spells, which allows us to play finks and rhinos and mot worry about getting skullcracked. And if they do crack us, we can easily race and or hold the ground down with huge elementals.

Against elves, they have to chord/company main phase. That certainly takes away any surprise factor when going into combat and allows cards like Pulse and Brutality to be live. Its very suttle, but VoR forces your opponent to play awkwardly, or waste a bunch of removal on him.

Well see how the meta shapes up aftee the gp but for now, VoR is sitting nicely sleeved in my main.

As much as I'm hating Flayers I won't recommend other players who want to play Junk to sell them

I have a playset foil I'd like to get rid of, but I feel like it'll be just 1 card away from being a break-away card

I would at least wait until the GP coming up this weekend

You also may want to consider if VOR is REALLY what you want to trade it for, it could honestly be a card of the month and then disappear (which is very likely).

I agree with this, and your previous post about VoR Spsiegel. He has been performing very well for me too in this grixis filled meta. He just forces your opponent to play sorcery speed, or take a removal spell and get a huge elemental. So good. That being said, the meta could shift to an aggro heavy meta again and flayers could be good again. So I wouldnt let Flayers go until the dust fully settles. And even then, I can see both fkayer and nonflayer lists thriving and you just pick whether you like them or not.
