why is it sometimes "whenever a creature you control attacks" (or zombie in this case) and now "when you attack with one or more zombies draw that many cards..." ???
what is the difference and why do they print them in different wordings when the mechanic is the same ?

or can some1 tell me the functional difference between Sanctum Seeker & Varina ?

    The reason is digital Magic.
The first one triggers once per creature attacking
The second one triggers only once per combat

At the end of the day the number of card draws will be the same, but the number of clicks can be very different.

Of course, they are not EXACTLY the same thing. A single trigger is more easily countered. But this is kind of a corner case scenario.

I like Bestow on her because it's a way to circumvent the command tax, but not in a broken way like Derevi

You still pay commander tax when bestowing.
Are you sure? I hope someone can explain this further.

The commander tax is an additional cost, as stated in Rule 903.8

903.8. A player may cast a commander he or she owns from the command zone. A commander cast from the command zone costs an additional {2} for each previous time the player casting it has cast it from the command zone that game.

Bestow is an alternative cost, as stated in Rule 702.102a
702.102a Bestow represents two static abilities, one that functions while the card with bestow is on the stack and another that functions both while it’s on the stack and while it’s on the battlefield. “Bestow [cost]” means “You may cast this card by paying [cost] rather than its mana cost.” and “If you chose to pay this spell’s bestow cost, it becomes an Aura enchantment and gains enchant creature. These effects last until one of two things happens: this spell has an illegal target as it resolves or the permanent this spell becomes, becomes unattached.” Paying a card’s bestow cost follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f–h. #

And when you pay an alternative cost you still have to pay all the additional costs, as stated in Rule 117.9d
117.9d If an alternative cost is being paid to cast a spell, any additional costs, cost increases, and cost reductions that affect that spell are applied to that alternative cost. (See rule 601.2f.)

If I have a horn of greed in play and I cast arixmethes normally (no solemnity in play or anything like that, he's going to enter as a land), do I draw a card? I clearly didn't play a land in the normal way but I also still played a card which did turn out to be a land. So I'm not entirely sure what happens here lol.

Nope, you are not playing a land. You are casting a creature spell that happens to enter the battlefield as a land.

Tiro's reaction was really touching. That's why I love these sets with callback characters!

Just so we're clear, the fact that it's not a creature while it has slumber counters on it means that you can tap it for mana the turn you cast it, right? (Assuming there's not some sort of Torpor Orb effect in play).

Torpor Orb doesn't stop it from entering the battlefield tapped and with 5 counters, as it's not a triggered ability.

But yes, as said, it does not have summon sickness, if you can untap it, you can add mana the turn it enters de battlefield!

If my understanding of the card and it's translation is right, you can also cast this during your own combat phase for a discount if you are attacking, especially with a bunch of creatures, and given it can create it's own token when it dies, it might go good in some kinds of token decks.

The translation is pretty accurate, so you got it right!

Interestingly, one of the artifact decks subtheme seems to be tokens. So the strategy you pointed should be quite viable in the deck

I guess animatou's deck will have plenty of "Play with the top of your card revealed".
Once you switch control of permanents you get to know what other players are drawing.

Even with the spoilers, I'm just burnt out on Artifacts. We just had Breya not too long ago, then Kaladesh and Aether Revolt, then Jhoira and others in Dominaria. Could we do ANYTHING ELSE with a UR commander? Perhaps another spells-matter deck? Maybe in (god forbid) Jeskai? Frown

I guess Kaladesh, Aether Revolt and Jhoira and others in Dominaria are exactly the reason we have a UR Artifacts Commander this year.
They want something players can grab some of the cards they've acquired during the last couple of years and put into the deck.
The same happened with Cats and Vampires in the last Commander product (not to mention Wizards got some love in Dominaria and Dragons are kinda of a theme in M19)

This kind of counter is just a tool to help you remember this creature was reanimated by Isareth and thus, if it would leave the battlefield, it is exiled instead of going to the original zone.

You can copy thopter assembly trigger with this right?

Well, you can copy it, but by the time the second instance tries to resolve it checks the condition again. At this time you'll control Thopters other than Thotper Assembly and thus, won't create 5 extra thotpters

So is rest in peace a good card to sb in vs uw control?

Sorry, I guess I wrote poorly.
I meant I used Rest in Peace against Jund/Abzan while playing as UW Control, implying that it might be a good idea to do the same against Jund/Abzan playing as Bogles.

That being said, it weakens Snapcaster Mage and Logic Knot. It stops Search for Azcanta if you play it before it flips. Doesn't seem like it's necessary though. Against control we should be as fast as possible and play around Wrath and Edict effects.

I actually like the idea of Rest in Peace against Jund. In fact, I used to side them in while playing with UW Control.
With Bogles I'm not very sure what to side out. Spirit Mantle felt useful, to hold their threats and get some free hits. Umbras feel quite important too, as they have tons of removal and it's the only way to keep our Spiritdancers.

As you pointed, it hits Tarmogoyf and Scavengin Ooze. It also weakens Kholagan's Command and the eventual Kitchen Finks (though I don't think it's a super common card in the deck nowadays)

But yeah, maybe cutting both Spirit Mantles for the RiP would've helped!

Is this something you do against any Goyf deck? Or more a Jund/Abzan thing?

I'd like to thank all the comments on my list! I ended up playing it as-is (with Leylines in the main deck) as I expected many red decks, turn 1 discards and edict effects in the meta. It helped me on game 1, some times, but I did sided it out most of the times (which did felt good, cause I had more slots on sideboard and even when it worked on game 1 I could switch it for more focused hate on game 2).

I finished 3-3 on GP São Paulo. I made some mistakes, but after 2 years away from Modern I got happy with the result. The deck felt quite viable.

    Round 1: 5c Humans

I started with a Leyline, which prevented his Kitesail Freebooter from taking one of my auras away. Evasion auras ware key to this match as he had so much going on the ground. The deck is pretty agressive but with a reasonable suited Bogle I was able to win the race.

Side out: 4 Leyline of Sanctity
Side in: 1 Dromoka's Command, 1 Spirit Link and 2 Seal of Primordium

The Leyline helped game 1, but I felt a few cards devoted to help me in the race and a couple of artifact destruction for his Aether Vial (and any eventual sideboard card he could come up with) would help. In the end he was manascrewed and I easily won.

    2-0

    Round 2: Monowhite Hatebears

Different deck, but a similar match. Early Aether vial with some creatures being dropped like Leonin Arbiter, Blade Splicer and Thalia, which is a bit annoying as our auras cost 1 more to play. At some point I was at 10 life and he had 7 power on the table with a Vial with 3 charge counters. I had a Bogle with 5 power and Spirit Mantle, he was at 12 life. I decided to risk it and swang for 5. He didn't drop more cruatures and left me at 3. I drew the last aura I needed and hit for lethal.

Side out: 4 Leyline of Sanctity
Side in: 1 Dromoka's Command, 1 Spirit Link and 2 Seal of Primordium

Leyline didn't felt useful at all in this match, so I brought the same cards from the other match.
Kept a hand with two Daybreak Coronet and a Griffin's Boon. He used a Flickerwisp to blink my Boon and dropped my Coronet, but I had another one, so no big deal.

    2-0

    Round 3: Titan Shift

I started with Leyline in play. So I felt quite safe to play my game. He did not much other than ramp. He played a Reclamation Sage to get rid of my Leyline, but it was too late for him at this point.

Side out: 1 Kor Spiritdancer, 2 Path to Exile
Side in: 1 Spirit Link and 2 Gaddock Teeg

This time I kept the Leyline, as they completely shuts down Valakut. Gaddock prevents Scapeshift and Spirit Link could help me get out of reach.
I got a pretty good hand, so Bogle on turn 1, Rancor + Ethereal Armor turn 2, Coronet turn 3. The game was over on turn 4.

    2-0

    Round 4: KCI

I started with Leyline, so I felt quite confortable against his Pyrite Spellbomb shenanigans. When his combo fired of he casted a Engineered Explosives with 4 counters and got rid of my Leyline.

Side out: 4 Leyline of Sanctity, 2 Path to Exile, 2 Kor Spiritdancer
Side in: 2 Stony Silence, 2 Rest in Peace, 2 Damping Sphere and 2 Gaddock Teeg

Since the Leyline wouldn't help when the combo fired off, I cut them all. I really didn't had much idea what to do (first time playing against the deck), so I sided in every card that seemed useful. Looking in retrospect, I don't think Damping Sphere is super useful. It slows his combo a turn or so. But once he can combo the Explosives simply get rid of it. Gaddock Teeg and Stony Silence ar way more resilient answers (even though he brings Nature's Claim and Lighning's Bolt for game 2). Rest in Peace stops his combo, but is easely removed by the Explosives. A well timed one, though, can get rid of some of his pieces.

It didn't went well though. He had a fast hand and the combo was set on turn 4.

    0-2

    Round 5: 4c Saheeli

Game 1 I keep a riskier hand, with Kor Spirit Dancer and Leyline, but with no Bogle. He goes with Noble Hierarch, Oath of Nissa and picks a Magus of the Moon. He enters turn 3 and I just watch moveless as he hits me to death.

Side out: 4 Leyline of Sanctity
Side in: 1 Dromoka's Command, 1 Spirit Link and 2 Path to Exile

I mistakenly read the deck as a Naya Zoo Aggro. So i brought Dromoka's Command and Spirit Link to help win the race and more Paths to avoid the Magus.
This time he brings a turn 3 Blood Moon. I Path my own Kor Spirit Dancer to get a basic land, but I soon discover the deck is actually a Saheeli Combo. So no donuts for me.

    0-2

    Round 6: Jund

Game 1 I start without a Leyline this time. He uses Inquisition of Kozilek to get rid of one of my auras. Liliana shows up on turn 4, I get a Dryad Arbor from my fetchland but he kills it with a Bolt, so I lose all my creatures and later, the game.

    Side out: 1 Kor Spiritdancer
Side in: 1 Path to Exile

Not sure what to get out. Leylines felt important and I didn't have much on the side to bring in. I decided to get an extra Path e cut a Kor, as his deck is heavy on removal. I start with a Leyline and a well suited Bogle. I close the game pretty quickly.

Game 3 I start with a leyline, once again, but the plays an Engineered Explosives with 1 charge counter. I get an Umbra on my Bogle, but my only other aura in hand is Daybreak Coronet. He even gets a Bloodbraid Elf cascading into an Abrupt Decay. I wasn't able to do much and he quickly dropped my life to 0.

    1-2

The GP was won by a Mardu Pyromancer deck. This kind of worries me as they can play Crackling Doom. It really hurts us as no card really stops them. The only workaround is to no focus on a single creature, but instead spread the auras among two of them. But it's not everyday we get 2 bogles and plenty of auras to make them both viable attackers!

    ---------------------------

Thanks again for the help! If you have any sugestions on my sideboard decisions, I'd gladly take them!
Not sure when I'll be able to play a Modern event again, but I guess I'll stick with the Bogles plan!

I would like to point out Freyalise was defo not monogreen in the stories and they printed her monogreen. I have a feeling they will just make them mono colour again....

Commander 2014 was a set of 5 monocolored decks. So the Planeswalker cards had this restriction.
With the new paradigm of 4 decks per set, they can be of any color combination. Last year we had a 5-color (Dragons), two 3-color (Vampires and Wizards) and a 2-color deck (Cats)

    Hi All,

New to Modern and have been watching highlights and doing heaps of reading on this type of deck.

Going to be playing a version of this in m FNM group when we play Modern.

I was wondering about Helm of the Host in this deck. Would it work or does its combined cost mean that it wouldn't be effective.

    Thanks

Helm of the Host is unplayable. The token wouldn't copy the aura boosts, so you would get a 1/1 Hexproof per turn. And the cost is prohibitive. You wouldn't get to 5 mana in most of your games.

If you meant Helm of the Gods, well, this card was made for this kind of deck. I've never seen a sucessful list use it though. I guess the main problem is that, alone, it doesn't boost your creature, as it doesn't count itself. So it' not exactly an extra copy of Ethereal Armor.
In a game where you have plenty of auras, it will help you close the game quicker.
In a game where you are struggling, this is not a card you'll want to top deck.
I don't think it is bad, but there are better options for the slot. You'll usually prefer a less impressive aura, but that will help the deck be more consistent!
