    Hi all,

I'm new to Modern, and can't quite decide on which deck I should work towards building. I've always liked the idea of playing a control deck because it seems like a lot of fun. I've looked around a bit to see which control decks might be good, but wanted to get some input from other players who know the format.

First, I'm wondering if it would be worth it to try going for control, or is Modern a format where control generally doesn't do very well compared to other decks, like combo or aggro? And if control is a good option, which version of control would you recommend? So far, I've seen UWR and Grixis, but was wondering if there are any other good options?

Thanks so much for any input!
Another interesting option is Titan Control, or Mono-Value Control. The title says it all really. The deck is cheap and very fun to play with. R/W Lockdown is another sweet deck

I really want to give this deck a shot, but I'm afraid that I'll screw up the manabase because it seems kind of intricate. Is there any advice for somebody who is new to combo decks and wants to give this a try?

Whoever told you white doesn't have much to offer in Modern is dead wrong. White offers a lot to Modern, just like every other color. For UB, your options might be limited. Grixis Delver and Grixis Control are both very competitive. You might be able to try UB Control, but I see no reason why to run it over Grixis Control. Esper Control might work as well, but I might be VERY wrong. If you want straight UB, mill decks show up every now and than, but I don't know how viable they are. This all I cam really give you. I would look at Grixis Control and Delver strategies. Welcome to the format!

I've heard Living End is complicated based on the matchup. Bloom Titan would've been a better example. Like I said, Living End was a poor choice to serve as an example. After some digging, I found Aristocrats. I think I might enjoy that a lot, even if it does mean building the deck up slowly.

So after helping people find decks of their own, I realized I have no idea what I'm going to do next in the format! Better give this a try

Cards I Own: Nothing really. I managed to win the Serum Visions and PoE promos in drafting, and I own 4 Bolts. Other than that, I usually just buy what I need

Colors That I Like: My favorite combination is Mardu, but I'm willing to pilot just about anything.

Playstyle: I love playing aggro (preferably swarm startegies.) but I want to try something new. I remember that I loved playing Mardu midrange in Standard with Butcher of the Horde when Khans first came out. I'd love to play midrange in Modern. I generally want to be the proactive player, but I wouldn't mind giving control a shot. Prison strategies seem really fun. (To explain why I used "Prison strategies" and "fun" in thr same sentence, fun is in the eye of thr beholder, and I would be holding the deck!)

What I Look For In A Deck: I want a deck that is conplicated. I like decks that require the pilot to learn when to acticate their combo/start trying to do its thing. A good example of such a deck is Living End, which requires you to know when to cascade into it. I'm not a combo player at all, that was just an example. It was probably a poor one at that. I just love super complicated strategies, but I'm okay with more linear strategies.

Budget: My immediate budget is $100, but I'm totally doen for slowly building a deck.

Slightly off-the-left-field question, outside the main combo decks (Twin, Scapeshift, Amulet, Griselbrand, Ad Nauseam, Storm, Licing End), what are some good rogu'ish combo decks that can do well at FNM type events?

    Thanks!
Yes there are! One of my favorites is the Forbidden Orchard - Massacre Wurm combo. The deck plays Intruder Alarm and cards like Voyaging Satyr to generate infinite mana with Forbidden Orchard. Next, you cast Wargate and go looking for Massacre Wurm to kill your opponent.

Somebody has to try the audacious lists that are trying something new. Kudos to this guy, who dared to try something new in a format that can punish brewing. I might just build this now IN PAPER. Proxy town, here I come! I could also slowly buy more cards for it. It would be a fun casual deck.

The fact with hating cards is that any cards anyone hates most likely counter or hate out their favorite decks. This is fair, of course. I don't hate any card. Each card has potential, and plus it's kind of rude sometimes. I don't want to be that guy at FNM who calls people bad because they like cards such as Myr Propagator . Everybody has pet cards that they think are sweet and I think that's awesome. There are cards that are annoying to play against for certain strategies such as Relic of Progenitus, Leyline of Sanctity, or even Collected Company, but all of these cards are totally fair.

Does anybody know what I should be packing in the sideboard for an unknown meta?

Ok Im looking to get into modern for about 250-300 euros.

My favorite colors are Blue then red then white then green then black and I prefer playing a control/combo/tempo game rather than straight up face aggro. I like to take my time and think my turns out. That being said, I'm always up for CoCo/Tribal decks.

Decks I've been looking at specifically are Time Walk, Enchantment Control, Stompy, Goblins, Norin, Tooth and Nail Combo and Storm but I don't know too much about the format so maybe someone can suggest something better or make a case for one of those decks.

My friends say that my local meta is made up mostly of grixis control if that makes a difference.

As for competitiveness something inbetween fnm and ptq would be nice, maybe a deck that if I got to know it better I could do reasonably well at PTQ if I choose to go there. The main point is I want to at least have game vs. Tier 1 decks. There shouldn't be a reason I instant concede because my oponnent is playing a tier 1 deck.

    Can anyone help me out?
I've never played against Grixis Control, but the general theory is that aggro can out pace control. Whether or not this is true for Grixis Control is beyond me. That being said, Goblins is cheap, but since you love playing blue Merfolk is a superb deck. It packs enough disruption to carry you through. I could be wrong though.

The deck is cheap in general and your list can be posted. You're going to want to move this to the Deadguy Ale thread.

There is actually already a primer for this! (Great minds think alike.) It's in the developing decks thread, and you will get a lot of help with your list, matchup info, and sideboard tech.

I'm looking to build this deck but I have no idea what colors I should play. I can't afford to go Bant, but what does each combination have to offer and what are their strengths and weaknesses. Also, I noticed a lot of decks don't run Storage Matrix anymore. Is there a specific reason for this? Should I still consider playung it?

I've heard Mind Twist called FoxNews.Card because it's a card that is "fair and balanced" or "fun and balanced." I call Languish "Purple haze in my mind" from the Jimi Hendrix song "Purple Haze." Lastly, Phyrexian Revoker will always be known as "Dental Hardware" to me.

Is it possible that WoTC knew about this plane? It can't possibly be a coincidence that Torwynn and Lorwyn are two letters off, one of which is just cutting a letter that appears twice at the end of a word.
