First... yes, this should be in rulings not here.

    Second - it depends:
Penance has the following oracle wording:
"Put a card from your hand on top of your library: The next time a black or red source of your choice would deal damage this turn, prevent that damage."
Penance has no target requirement, and so you can use it as a free outlet to put cards on top.

    Hidden Retreat is worded differently:
"Put a card from your hand on top of your library: Prevent all damage that would be dealt by target instant or sorcery spell this turn."
This needs a target, so you can't use it to put cards on top freely.

    -
"113.9a Just because an object or player is being affected by a spell or ability doesn’t make that object or player a target of that spell or ability. Unless that object or player is identified by the word “target” in the text of that spell or ability, or the rule for that keyword ability, it is not a target."

"Penance's ability doesn't target anything, and you don't choose a source for that ability until that ability resolves. You need only have a card in your hand to activate the ability.

Oh my... What a mess this story ist.

They created planeswalkers, only to despark them and build portals for everybody... how stupid. Some characters had nearly no screentime at all, bevor beeing depowered again - like Narset, Samut, Calix, ...

Some other characters are used over and over - like Nahiri. I really like her personally, but let the poor soul rest. She should have died during the Invasion of New Phyrexia in a final blast... but she got resurected as phyrexian, buried as such, survived again, ripped her metal parts out of her body - which is complete nonsense! She was compleated, so first of all she should be unconscious like Nissa and Ajani when Elesh Norn fell. Secondly you can't just tear phayrexia out of your body - because you body IS phyrexian. Third, she would bleed to death, given how the spikes on her shoulders and the blades on her arms were.
And even in this new story, she should have died from the fall... but no - we need her, because we don't have any other characters? And how can she know, what Ajani did to the gods? She wasn't there as Elesh gave him the task to do so, and noone told her on Zendikar, because it didn't matter during her invasion of Zendikar...

Ajani ist so out of character. He would talk to Elspeth - not search Nahiri. How could he find her anyway? And after her fall - he disappears? Why? He didn't even look if she survived?

And why the desparking? Normally, most planeswalkers die during this process. And it doesn't serve any purpose. I get, that the new omenpaths help wizard connect places and therefore make new exiting stories and sets. But planar portal aren't new and could have coexisted next to the walkers. And the walkers would be more statik in the future anyway, as the rebuilding process will take a lot of time, and most of them would - as nahiri and sorin, would serve more or less as guardians of their homeworlds in the future (like Serra did in distant past). Koth now has neither home nor the possibility to wander in search for a new one... how dumb. Just that someone can build a Sarkhan commander deck? Really? They do know that Oathbreaker exists and more so that this characters are liked because they aren't just another legendary creture?

That's lousy and depressing. Just stupid "write around" and no actual deep fantasy story.

Oh well... the first spoilers roll in. Nice cards (really!) but awfull lot of Variants and borders... But story wise we know now:

    http://mythicspoiler.com/newspoilers.html

Narset, Samut, Sarkhan, Kiora and Nissa really loose their sparks in aftermath. I think, they'll become guardians of their worlds - Tarkir, Amonkhet, Tarkir (again?), Theros(?) and maybe Lorwyn/Dominaria (?) - as Nissa formed a bond with the world, and Nahiri has survived and maybe takes her natural spot as defender of zendikar?
Other than that - interesting choices... Sarkhans Story is told (Searching wanderer, maddened by bolas/ugin,thrown throught time, "healing Tarkir" and now become the dragonspeaker-"supreme"), as is Kiora's (battling with Thassa over the sea, stealing her bident and maybe even outlive her (if Thassa was compleated) and even Nissa seems at a natural end (her being able to bond with planar souls and finding love in Chandra and having a fractured spark beeing compleated and healed). Nahiri had her time as well, fighting for and against Zendikar and finally burned out her rage and anger... And Karn? He created worlds and destroyed them, was mentro for planeswalker and saw power rise and fall... he is a relict of history - just on the wrong plane. But maybe "open the way" shows how he can be brought back to Tolaria?
I'm sad for Narset and Samut - as they both hadn't a time and place to shine. But than again Samut Is Amonkhets walker of the samut - telling the story of the crops and worthy - and may be useless as Xenagos was for the future.

And for the following walkers this could mean their ending too (as their stories is complete):
Teferi (more than finished, as even Zhalfir is back), Elspeth (she is an angel now), Jace and Vraska (maybe back on ixalan?), Ajani? (but he was healed successfully, maybe this "resets" him as Karn 2.0), Huatli (set planeswalker as Samut), the Wanderer (protector of Kamigawa and more or less useless on other worlds), Liliana (now chancelor of strixhaven?), Ral Zarek (Set Planeswalker Ravnica), Saheeli (Set Planeswalker Kaladesh but that qould be sad for her love Huatli), Sorin (Eternal protector of Innistrad), Ugin/Bolas (as they are sealed away and their brthren story complete).

Leaves us with homeless walkers in need of a place to fight for (Koth, Vivien, Tezzeret, Ob Nixilis, Kaya, Grist, Ashiok, Davriel)
and the "young" like Teyo (even if his world is dumb and he would be an awesome protector for it), Will&Rowan, Tyvar (as link to Lorwyn), Oko, Kasmina, Yanling and Jiang, , Niko Aris, Kaito, Basri, Calix, Chandra (as young age searching for adventure), and some non-canon and weird characters.

I'm asking myself "What did you expect?"
We have one Set for an invasion of 36+ (just counting the battles but there are way more) known worlds with hundreds of possible involved characters.
    In comparison:
The first Invasion just had three to four planes involved - Dominaria, Phyrexia, Rath and Mercadia - where the last one didn't really matter in the final battle, Rath "dissolved" during stage two and Phyrexia itself was just a "sideevent" not really mattering much, as Yawgmoth more or less had abandoned his homebase. Even then, this "small" Invasion took place over at least 3 Sets (INV, PLS, APO) - even more if you count the preparations on both sides - and had 3 Novels (+one Prequel) just around the climax-battle. All three sets together took place during Oct 2000 till Oct 2001 (when Odyseey launched), exactly one year.

Now, Wizards chose to do the same thing again just bigger and faster. We have 10x more planes - even if some of them don't really matter, we have at least 5+ places where planeswalkers where involved (as the main characters). We had one to two sets time for it, makes about 4 months. And no novels, just 17 story chapters (about 3/4 of one book, maybe less) including the side stories.

I mean... even if they wanted to tell all the stories, places, characters - it wouldn't be possible. At least not now.

I think they managed to set up the next stage for years to come - a lot of open question, a lot of aftermath and rebuild sets, a lot of revisiting without repeating the same stuff other and other again. I mean - who wants to see the same battle over the guilds in Ravnica for the fourth time?

Maybe it's just me... but what if this packaging means someone - maybe Kasmina or Tezzeret or Karn/Teferi etc. - are searching their freinds/relatives/survivors of their planeswalker-kind to form some kind of avengers/gatewatch+ or just populace report? It seems quite obvious that X is dead
    clearly Tamiyo
    , pw-stamp could be "desparked"
Karn, Nissa (Head is in the background), Kiora
and nothing at all is "alive and kicking"
    Huatli (?)

I really, really dislike the direction wizard is going... we're losing more and more non-human planeswalker... which made the whole concept interesting: to find an elf/merfolk/leonin on a plane where no such folk existed... I disliked the fast-dismiss of Xenagos years in the past as well... i mean, that's what fantasy is about? I see humans all day! XD

...losing Dovin (WotS), Karn (MoM), Kiora (MoM-AM), Nahiri (MoM), Bolas (WotS), Nissa (MoM-AM), Tamiyo (MoM), Thibalt (ONE), Ugin (WotS), Vraska (MoM), Wren (MoM)... in the past two archs!
This leaves us with Ajani (if he's back again), Angarath, Elspeth (if Angel counts), Ashiok, Grist, Ob Nixilis, Oko and Tyvar and maybe Quintorius - in canon (not counting Comet, probably dead Geyadrone Dihada, and D&D's Ellywick, Lolth, Zariel

Well... it's odd - i kinda liked the story and conclusion. At least they didn't do the dirty "time-trick" to solve the phyrexians. I like how nearly each plane on it's own evolved something to battle new phyrexia... ikorias monsters evolved, capennas angels returned... I like Wren's arc (even if unexpected) and how Elspeth turned out as Serra 2.0.
Ultimately Elesh's "All will be one"-concept was her downfall - as urabrask said. First of all - New Phyrexia was never "one" under the five suns... Its not old Phyrexia under one Yawgmoth because lil Elesh isn't a God like he was. This flaw in strategy and unity was really bad during the invasion - as no general wants to have a rebellion in your homeland during an full scale invasion or a double agent in you prepation phase. Next you attack a multitude of diffent planes with different enviroments at once and split you forces... that's just dumb and ignorant, and opened up the counter attacks. Old Yawgi evoved different weopons and strategies for different settings - on one plane alone...
Some small flaws remain - as ever in modern stories but nothing major (as I think).

    - Kaya killing Heliod... Well he was compleated, which was weird in the first place. So maybe he became corporal/spiritual to be killed by kaya... why not.
    - Some adventures and an angel killing Nahiri? First of all Nahiri ("the" Nahiri) should be dead - burned out. Why she has memory of her older self is beyond my understanding and I don't like how they defeated her... IF she doesn't return. (Maybe she is a "future" plant as well? The story describes her as stubborn beyond comprehension, she is milenia years old and powerful and tough, we haven't seen her body, could be in slumber, there can be an "uncompleation" and we have Nissa back.)
    - Tibalt. His whole story after Kaldheim is missing - from compleation to death.
    - Zhalfir becoming a plane. Thats weird, as it was "only" a continent on dominaria... but okay maybe it can "grow" and become more than that.
    - Karn losing "his" spark. Not that he gives up his spark to cleanse his friends, just that he did it on Zhalfir instead of Dominaria. But he is made of silver, so maybe he can be transported by his friend to his resting place?
    But what remains for aftermath?
The planes not mentioned? Ulgrotha, Lorwyn, ... ?

Well let's face it - they are gunna crush into each an every world/character/storyline they've got to set a final stamp. Like one said - it's Invasion 2.0 and there wasn't much left after it:
We lost our main characters (Urza, Gerrard, Hanna, most of the other Nine Titans, Yagmoth, Crovax, Eldamari, Takara, the Academy around Barrin, Teferi, Multani...) with only a few ones standing - Sisay, Orim, Tahngarth, Squee Lord Windgrace, Freyalise to name the most natable ones. Some of them never returned after the "time jump" into the future but others made a reapperance even if we thought they were dead - like Jodah, the Weatherlight herself, Ertai, ...
So yes - it will become horrible messy and most people will die to make room for new characters to shine or to make room for legends how one has survived, has returned becomes redeemed or something else like a god or spirit. And with Kaervek and Tezzeret they are "releasing" more "evil" for the future.
In Invasion we lost two whole worlds - Phyrexia and Rath due the soulbombs and the overlay - and most notable locations were compleatly altered - Yavimaya was planted to Urborg, Shiv and Zhalfir phased out, Tolaria demolished, Keld molten down in a volcano, llanowar bombarded with biological bombs... And nevertheless all of them recovered really well in a way or another.

It's clear that phyrexia needs to loose - otherwise the whole world building would be useless. More than that it would be quite stupid that old phyrexia threw the armies of two worlds (three if you count the fleet in mercadia), planar portals, skyships, dragon engines and mechanical spires, chemical and biological weapons, a whole plane, microbots in flowstone and a f*ing god on dominaria alone and lost (but killing some god-like planeswalkers like flees) and Miss mortal Skullhead here mananges to conquer all known worlds (including dominaria) in mere weeks with just one - not even under one banner united - army? That's hillarious just in the numbers...

With Elspeths return, the Coalition has now two "Outs" to play - Teferi (do we KNOW if he's a playeswalker anymore? His last story had a strange passage there...) and her. I like the idea of infusion the world tree with halo - as the whole "will be one"-story seems to be new phyrexias greatest strength and therefore could be they hardest downfall. This would cleanse the whole white faction from existence and would place phyrexia where it (in my oppionion) belongs - black for careless ambition and blue for reckless innovation. Red could die in an explosive finish of resistence and green finds it's greater master like Garruk or even nature itself like Multani&Yargle/Worldsoul...

So just finish it off - kill each and everything - i hope that so old story is preserved in legends and a new - better - one can emerge.

Ah yes - of ocurse we need Karn AND Jeska to close the Rifts - so the mending can't happen without Karn.

Deleting the planar bridge is the least invasive way to the story... Bolas would find any other way to transport his army, because as he started his plan with his lazotep warriors and stuff he couldn't foresee the invention of an artificial device helping his goal. Well maybe he could, be more or less he could alternatively just find some kind of "elder spell" either - that wouldn't be that hard to do. Would make Tezzeret less interesting, but as an agent he would work as well.

But than again it's just a timeplay - War of the spark was 4560 AR, now we are just 2 years later (sucks to be a hero xD...) and phyrexia "acquired" tezzeret, took the sap of the tree, seeded the worldbreaker and build up the invasion army... in just TWO years!

Killing Yawgmoth would totally collapse a lot of the whole storyline. Without Yawgmoth, Pjyrexia wouldn't exist which kills the thran's downfall (they could collapse anyway, but who knows), it would totally alter the brothers war - Mishra wouldn't have any chance to Urza, Urza's story himself wouldn't unfold, the shard wouldn't exist, the academy wouldn't be build, teferi wouldn't ascend (whoops - temporal paradox), neither the invasion, the mending, ... You had a completely new "what if" alternate univers with totally different characters - congrats you killed the whole backstory and start anew.

The alteration should be something like killing Rashmi (preventing the planar bridge from being invented, therefore locking the Phyrexians on Mirrodin) or destroying Mirrodin after Karn left or after Memnarchs Defeat. But it was stated by Karn, that he may have infected other worlds too, so maybe than they may come from another ancle. Maybe killing/cleaning Karn after the Invasion is the safest spot...

For my understanding - is Elpeth dead and gone again (as stated on the card)? Lost Teferi his spark again (as stated in the story)?

  • posted a message on ONE- Phyrexia: All Will Be One stories, lore and world-building
Well... this story was upsetting at best. First of all it was a horrbile repetition of the original attack of the nine titans on original Phyrexia. You had nine (here ten) planeswalkers (first godlike beeings, here some better wizards) attacking an artifical plane to blow it up. Urza brought Soul-Bombs powered by the pure lifeforce of Tevesh Szat and except for beeing "a pernicious deed" that blew up most of the planet, the multiverse wasn't affected in any way. Why didn't Urza search and use the original sylex by himself? Why didn't he create one resembling the original like saheeli did - i mean it was Urza? Maybe because it was a stupid idea in the first place, as the sylex itself formed the shard of worlds as a "small" sideefect - which on it's own wouldn't be a bad prison for yawgmoth, but even Urza didn't like the idea. Teferi - originally meant to be one of the nine titans! - now has the beautiful idea to do, what even Urza didn't want to do - an instead of asking Planeswalker Urza back in time why he went the other way - Teferi decides to ask broken grandpa Urza... well done (not!).

It seems plausible, that detonating the sylex EVER again wasn't a good idea but than again the whole plan is just dumb. Even more stupid is Elspeths last-recus-safe, as she planeswalks away with a loaded and triggered sylex in the f**** multiverse!? That thing blows up, and taking it in the blind eternities seems even worse than the possibiliy that the tree brings the detonation to other wordls.

Taking Lukka (a creature-bynder) and Nissa (a worldsoul-connector) and an unstable/unreliable Walker (Wanderer) to attack a world which works very much like an hive mind seems horrible stupid. During this type of mission you need stealth (like Kaito, Kaya and Jace), protection (Elspeth, Koth,...) and brute force. But where is Garruk? Teyo? Sorin? Vivien or Samut? Don't they have an interest in protecting their worlds? And Garruk seemed like an obvious choice as he is one of Jace's closer friends and now free again.

And one thing i just don't get - to become compleated you can be either alive and retain most of you abilities (which is stupid on it's own for planeswalkers, as the phyrexians are more or less soulless beeings and the spark is connected to the soul... but well) or you can be resurrected and become a horrible zombie-parody of yourself. But how on earth can a DEAD planeswalker like Nahiri (as the story said "she clearly didn't survive her fall" after her "burnout") and Jace (was killed by Elspeth and described as "corpse" in the story - become a compleated planeswalker?! Either they didn't die, as death give's you soul free and they can be compleated as walkers or the can be resurrected as zombie like beeings - potentially strong but no planeswalkers... This inconsistency seems unlogical.

EDIT: And as someone already posted - Phyrexia is that hard overpowered by today's standards, that only some kind of "oh i dreamed this" or "time-magic tricks by teferi) seems like the only possible outcome to have any future sets. And yes - seems a lot like Avengers Endgame, they even froze their own "Antmann" in time for the rescue after all is lost (Teferi) - which is just lazy story building. But maybe a bad copy is better than an even worse own invention...

Is it me, or does the card feel like it's missing "if able" behind "each opponent chooses a different nonland card from among them"? It keeps giving me the impression the game will just stall infinitely if there are more opponents than nonland cards because the opponent has to choose a different nonland card, but is unable to, but since the text doesn't state it, we'll all be stuck waiting for the player to choose among no options (technically can't pick nothing, since the choosing of a card is mandatory).

Interesting point. What if - even unlikely - there are more lands in the top 10 than players at the table? Needs errata, doesn't it?
