    JACKPOT!

Ladies and gentlemen I think we’re looking at Caves of Koilos!

    Thanks for sharing. Smile

In the story it says Karn gets buried in the rocks and sand until rescued by Ajani so I am 99.9% positive these are going to be in the set.

Yes allied need to come in first so they may finally be playable in Pioneer. Then the enemy ones to finish the cycle and open all of them up to Standard.

This just about has to confirm them...

    https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/episode-1-echoes-dark-2022-08-10

Even from three caverns away, the shriek of breaking metal echoed against the stone. Yet another broken excavator. If Karn had been an organic being, he would have sighed. Instead, he only paused and listened to the excavator's lingering rattles. He pitied his machines: no single setting could accommodate the eccentric geology of the Caves of Koilos, where olivine rock was as likely to back into sandstone as cinnabar, but he had no alternative. Here, he'd find the secret to operating the Sylex.

I mean c'mon they have to be in there.

ok, i think i know what this means. the rest of the ana battlemage cycle.

i'm also thinking we'll see a return (or variation of) other nostaligic cards like serra angel( i hope it doens't feel too much like baneslayer angel). i assume one per color. red got a new version of shivan dragon

If they do, I'd love to see if they can make a balanced current power level Serra Angel. What's the mana cost you can put on a 4/4 with flying and vigilance that it will be good, but not too good? My guess is WWW.

    I would say

    1WWW

    Flying, vigilance

    4/3

    OR

    WWW

    Flying, vigilance

    3/4

I am a little curious on what mechanics or potential mechanics would add flavor or be a good fit for the set. Ideas?

I would love a mechanic to be called Quickdraw. But that seems to be covered by Haste. Although bringing Spilt Second back would be cool I am not sure how high that ranks on the Storm Scale. Hideaway could see another appearance potentially. Exalted could fit a Lone Ranger type thematically. I had already mentioned Horsemanship. But I am wondering what new mechanic could fit potentially.

Posse would be a cool named mechanic if it worked similar but fixed Banding I suppose. Just a thought.

What about clash? Its almost like poker with the revealing the top cards of the deck.
    Maybe something like High Ground?

Interesting. Thanks for the reminder. Clash (or something like it) would be pretty flavorful.

It might need some tweaking, but I think that there should be a shuffle before clashing for lack of a better mechanic, otherwise you can manipulate the deck with cards like Play with Fire otherwise you diminish the flavor a bit.

The deck manipulation aspect is part of the game and should be kept in my opinion. Stacking the deck in your favor is a VERY Wild West card mechanic. No shuffling beforehand either as it eats up too much time. But again I think the mechanic or a tweaked similar mechanic would be VERY playable, flavorful and fitting.

Lastly: Could we see this set as early as next year in Q3 as "Lacrosse" or Q4 as "Offroading"?

I don't think so for Lacrosse. Lacrose is a part of the Phyrexia 4 set story narrative. I could be wrong but I think it's more likely that the two sets following Brother's War are going to be on New Phyrexia. The part that kinda confuses me is that Marathon is getting an epilogue set. I have a theory that the epilogue will be called Mirrodin Pure. I don't know if they are going to introduce a new plane amongst this storyline I think it'd make it worse for people who want the wild west set to be in the middle of a big storyline. Imagine them introducing Eldraine in between Ravnica Alliance and War of the Spark it would have taken steam out of both the hype of Eldraine and War of the Spark. So TLDR I don't think they'd introduce this plane until after the Phyrexia war.

Offroading would be a more apt naming convention for a Wild West set. I think it would be the earliest it would show up. If not maybe Q1 or Q2 of 2024 then. I think we find out next years sets on August 18th.

Well he sure gave a vague and/or obscure answer to that one. The author of the question got what they asked for. Personally I would have asked for ANY mildly SPECIFIC hint he could give. The answer he gave is a nothing-burger. But thanks for sharing anyway. Smile

What if my proposal was for a tri-land? 3 basic land types and 3 depletion counters with all else being the same as described above?

    Thoughts?

Edit: Let me change that a bit. 3 basic land types with ONE depletion counter and all the other stipulations described above. Would this be a Rare or a Mythic then?
