Been awhile since I posted here, but I wanted to share a list I plan on bringing to my LGS for their Tuesday Modern event. War of the Spark added some fun goodies that I'm excited to try.
Maybe your experiences have differed, but trying to get set up against the Red Prison player at my LGS is nigh impossible. Prison chews up our kind of deck and spits it back out, toothpick included. :'(
My store has an abnormal number of Blood Moon decks and sometimes it's not possible to afford basic blue/green and white. Plus the exile mode hits flashback cards and Phoenix.
On a semi-related note, IF the London Mulligan somehow becomes reality, what do you think it'll mean for Rock and other midrange decks? I've had people tell me that midrange decks will become significantly worse if people have the ability to more readily manipulate their opening hands.
Played Prison for the first time in awhile tonight and got smashed by Tron and UR Phoenix, but went 2-0 against Burn. Never saw a Moon even after mulling to 5 both games of Tron, and he got T3 Tron both games to boot. Phoenix I went 1-2; lost the third game because of two Phoenix that he got back (ON TURN TWO) after letting his cantrips be countered by Chalice. The one game I did win against Phoenix tho felt REALLY nice. I resolved a Chandra and Chalice on 1, and managed to protect it through multiple creatures and threats. Eidolon also made him waste a turn removing it every time I got one out, which REALLY helped. Overall I lost more games to Prison being temperamental and having terrible draws than I did from being outplayed (when I had what I needed, I was able to totally shut down the games I won). As much as I love the deck, the inconsistency of the draws and flooding/screwing reminds me why I took a break to go to Ponza and other decks (my store is infested with Tron and Amulet right now, along with Phoenix and Burn).
Ditto on Skred, generally cheaper than Prison and what I played for awhile before coming here. It's a fun deck and FNM viable, plus a little more forgiving than Prison.
At the very least, Explosion Zone is a nice mana sink if circumstances permit. Also random question, are people replacing Sea Gate Wreckage with Zhalfirin Void now?
I went 3-0 for the first time in ages running GB Elves at my LGS last weekend, managing to take down the best Rock player at the store too, so I'd agree that Elves is still a decent pick. That being said, I dodged both Mono-Red Phoenix and Tron so results may vary haha.
So I went 0-3 last night with a Gifts list and that's convinced me enough to shelve that plan for now. The biggest issue was having to modify/remove a lot of interaction in order to make room for the Gifts/Unburial combo. Going forward, I'll be testing the Mindslaver/Academy lock, but I think I'll stick to a more stock list for now. Control especially was brutal for me last night.
