    Based off a brew that someone in a discord I frequent shared. Original designer created a monoblack version, this is my take on a Rakdos (BR) version. Curious to see if people think it might be FNM-worthy.

    If I wanted to run a full set of Obsession, what would I cut in UW? And what would I run instead of Vial in a Vial-less Bant build? Curious.

    Decided to finish building this deck since my LGS is shifting more to aggro (Humans, Elves). The only combo deck is KCI and in 2 months of playing there, the only Tron that's made an appearance is Eldrazi Tron. I'm working off of thnkr's list from a few posts ago, slightly modified, just waiting for the cards to come in. The manabases at my LGS besides elves also happen to be greedy (there's a Ponza player who generally does very well).

    Counters and queller can really put a damper on the biggest plays. I would avoid unified will and look to cards like unsubstantiate to give you an mode to use vs vial/cavern heavy tribal decks. I've greatly enjoyed spell pierce as a 2 of in the main - but I board d out of counters in these matches.

    Humans has an incredibly hard time killing you through a worship. Elves isn't impacted by it. GB can just drain kill you. GW can ballista down your board and then dome you for whatever they need unless you have the hexproof lock - at which point they just dig for a rec sage. Rec save may already be coming in because of vials anyway - esp finally if they are worried about grafdiggers cage.

    Just some notes from my games at the LGS with UW vial.


    Is it worth using Echoing Truth instead of unsubstantiate? I'd rather not go hunting after and spend more money. :/

    Obviously there are games where creatures can be picked off one by one or you flood/screw, but it should be a small amount of the times. If you want to better grind through your opponents i strongly suggest the bant vialless version with collected company, rattlechains and kira, great glass spinner: you will lose some amount of speed but you'll be better equipped to grind through interaction (your deck will be pre-boarded for grindy matchups).
    Running 20 lands in UW is fine imho, one land will not change the chances drastically. I would advise against it if you plan to splash black for lingering souls.


    Thanks for the tips! The only control decks that show up regularly at my LGS these days are either Jeskai or some form of UR, so I deal mainly with counters and red removal. Many more aggro decks have started showing up recently so I'm trying to figure out what to play and board against things like Humans and Elves.

    Hmm okay. Also for Curious Obsession or Chart a Course, which should I run, should I, and how many copies? One thing that kicked my butt last time I ran spirits was running out of threats because control decks grinded me out with removal and counters. Also, is it bad cutting lands to 20 with Vial? I got flooded a ridiculous amount and had to mull down to 4 twice in a row one match.

    My meta right now has some control (Jeskai & UR Thing in the Ice/Blue Moon), but it's shifting towards aggro. Any advice for going up against Humans/Elves? I can run either Bant or UW Spirits now.

    Also curious about Vials in Bant Spirits. Plus, how do people make room for Curious Obsession or Chart a Course? And which one of the two do people prefer? I got my butt kicked two weeks ago running UW Spirits because my ghost bros kept getting picked off by removal, bounces, and counters.

    Pretty stock list is yours, it's pure gas with a bit of interaction due to Merfolk Trickster and Harbinger of the tides. How is your sideboard? I think in this metagame we're almost never the beatdown deck, so maybe you can find a room for spell pierce or peek which are both great. mistcaller or cursecatcher is a meta call, if you know which decks are at your LGS.


    I played with 4x Spell Pierce in main and in some matches was very good. But in late game was really bad draw, and it's also not very nice when you have on board caverns and mutavaults.

    My usually cards for sideboard is something like that: 1x Kira, 1x Kopala, 2x Tidebinder Mage, 3x Relics, 2x Echoing Truth, 1x Tectonic Edge, 4x Deprive, 2x Dismember, 2x Ceremonious Rejection, 2x Sea's claim.

    Against which decks we are removing Aether Vial(Mardu, GDS is 100% correct choice?)? And why don't we play 4x serum visions, is peek really better?
    Think that i will buy 2x Phantasmal Image for now.



    Btw modern classic Dallas tournament, some guy with Merfolks came in top 10. He also played with 4x Peek in main.

    For the Peek question, it's instant speed which helps with flexibility, and helps with tempo because it gives us hand information.

    Historically, the difference was that GW Hatebears was more aggressive (e.g., Scavenging Ooze, Loxodon Smiter, etc.) while WG D&T still used ETB effects (e.g., Flickerwisp, Restoration Angel) to get ahead of the opponent.

    Ultimately, the difference between the two decks is not in their card composition, but in their lines of play. In Legacy, Sneak and Show shares a lot of the same cards with High Tide (because they're all blue cantrips), but the decks have very different lines of play. It's the same thing for WG D&T and GW Hatebears; the decks are made up of similar cards, but D&T should give you access to control sequences in ways that Hatebears simply can't. But in turn, Hatebears gives you access to aggressive lines of play that D&T typically doesn't have access to.

    Yes. Metagaming is very important for D&T strategies; you should tune the deck to wherever you will be playing regularly. If you want a proactive (as opposed to a reactive) E&T strategy, you should check out the Death & Staxes primer.

    You'll want to check on the current metagame, but it used to be 3-4 TKS. The number of Reality Smashers would typically depend on the pilot, but most people either selected 0 or 2-3. Checking the metagame will be important though, because Modern is incredibly fast right now. I'm not sure if you can reliably cast Reality Smashers at the moment.


    Aaaah okay, gotcha. I deal with a pretty control and removal heavy meta right now, so I'm leaning more towards aggro/Bears because Taxes straight up isn't doing enough damage to kill before I get wiped or slowly picked off by removal because the creatures are so weak P/T wise.

    The line between my D&T and Bears prolly gets even more blurred considering I'm using a full set of vial too.

    As for Monowhite Eldrazi Taxes, I haven't seen anyone play main deck Reality Smashers, but most people seem to play full sets of TKS and Displacers, along with a set of Eldrazi Temples.

    I got destroyed last night, 1-2. My win was against RB Hollow One, almost lost the first game of that match except I topdeck a Supreme Phantom to get the 2 extra power I needed for the kill. Second game, completely shut him down with Rest in Peace.

    My two losses were against 2 UR Thing in the Ice decks, but the second match played almost like my old Elemental Combo deck, he was swinging with a flipped Thing in the Ice that was pumped by Mutagenic Growth and Assault Strobe.

    Considering yesterday, I'm conflicted on whether or not to give Spirits another shot or to rebuild my old GW Hatebears deck with the cards I just found again.
