Guess I'm in the minority of being into a cat deck? I dunno, kitties are cute, this seems like a fun idea! Really hoping they end up doing angels, as well
I really, really, really hope that they don't focus on the Gatewatch as much for this one! I highly doubt they will, but, it's still a worry. I'm so excited to see if there's any familiar faces we'll be seeing! It'd be so cool if we heard even just references to Urza, or Serra, or the Brothers War, or just whatever! I hope this set lives up to what we're hoping
It's not "Reserved List abolished" because that has nothing to do with the 25th anniversary. It's true that that would be a "big thing", but years of behind-the-scenes dealing by lawyers supposedly haven't helped with the RL.
To my knowedlge, WotC has actually never had lawyers involved in the RL... Anyone who knows whether they have, post a link, I'd love to know!
Remind me again what was wrong Lorwyn? I come and go out of this game and Lorwyn was a time when I wasn't paying attention.
To my knowledge, it had a lot to do with the fact that the block was 4 sets long instead of 3, so it dragged on for a long time. It also really forced tribal, and you basically pick a tribe and that's what you get out of the set. If you don't like any of the tribes, you were kinda' outta' luck and would have to deal with it for 4 sets. Apparently it sold pretty bad. I think it's the reason Wizards doesn't wanna do a set with no humans, since Lorwyn had no humans. I feel like the do weird stuff due to silly reasons, like no return to Kamigawa because "players didn't like it".. Players love the actual plane, it's just that there were too many mechanics that were niche and wouldn't work, not just outside of the set, but together (to my knowledge..)
I could be wrong since I wasn't playing for either of these blocks, but that's what I've gathered
I will sooooo love it if it turns out Gideon is 'evil'! Magic needs more white aligned villains, and everyone's expecting Liliana to be the one to wreak havoc, it'd be (for once as of late imo) some good neat storytelling
How does it go from the "date of March 31st" to "sometime in June not too sure when"
Because MTG is the new YGO.
I feel like MtG is just so weird the last couple years, basically BfZ onward So, I guess the two set block, no core set, forward? I'm not liking the whole announcement day thing just because of how long this has taken
My boyfriend's Shu Yun deck is creatureless, and also pretty vicious, it's impressive lol. He also had a Uril deck that costs under 20 dollars for the whole thing
Has anyone had much luck with Gift of Orzhova? I'm probably gonna throw that into my pauper deck pretty quick here and I think it'd work great with Nightsky Mimic, personally!
I was really excited for some cool Egyptian flavour in a set, but... It was hit or miss flavour wise. I like the idea of a Bolas plane, as well, and combining the two was no issue for me, but having everyone, and I mean EVERYONE on the plane so concerned on the trials took away from some stuff they could have done to fit the Egyptian theme more. Plus, the God's are way underpowered.. I agree that not doing devotion was an alright idea to make the Theros Gods stand out, but what made the Theros gods so cool was the fact that they were fantastic, with the drawback... These gods, mostly drawback I'm also not seeing a whole lotta cards that'll be good (I don't play standard, so I'm not talking about standard good) nor do I see any of the mechanics sticking around. Cycling coming back is neat, but the cycling duals are meh :/ Having them enter tapped is sorta' lame imo but I can understand why they did it
I feel like Wizard's is being too cautious lately, standard sets feel underpowered and more on the bland side... Hoping that their big announcement eventually is a good one!
Who's your commander?? I wouldn't include Bruna, Light of Alabaster unless you're serious about aura's, splashing blue in an angel tribal just for her wouldn't be a great idea, if you wanna have it be a multicoloured deck, for two colour I'd choose boros (Gisela, Blade of Goldnight) or Aurelia, the Warleader) , and for three, probably mardu (Tariel, Reckoner of Souls) .. Once again, same with Jenara when it comes to bant, especially since there's only a couple other angels that have green in them, it would be a distraction from the angel-ness of the deck to put green in, imo
When I first planned my angel deck, I was wanting to do multicolour, but trust me, mono white is the way to go! It'll be incredibly hard to play cards like either of the Linvala, Avacyn, Angel of Hope , Iona, Shield of Emeria, Angel of Jubilation or Archangel of Tithes .. The thing is, almost all angels cost quite a bit of mana, so you're gonna want to cast all of these as soon as possible in order to get the most out of them, even in a slower format such as EDH, but when you get multiple colours in, the chances of casting creatures with 3 white mana in a 3 colour deck probably triples
The awesome thing with angels as a creature type, is they typically work by shutting down your opponents board in a way, and once you have tons out, they'll barely be able to play sometimes! They're pretty hard to beat considering they always have flying, and if your general is Avacyn, and you got your Platinum Angel out, get your big swings in, and you'll basically win 95% of the time
Even with all that though, you'll want some one drops... Unfortunately, basically all angels have a high casting cost, so going 100% angels in the creature department might land you some trouble It sucks having to break up the super tribal theme, but you'll probably wanna throw in a few good early drops that unfortunately won't be angels.. I'd suggest Soldier of the Pantheon, Serra Ascendant, Grand Abolisher, Knight of the White Orchid , stuff like that, just REALLY good early drops if that makes sense? Also, having your Serra Avenger in there is a must, even if she can't come out in the first 3 turns, having her on turn 4 is just as good, or if you find a way to cheat her out sooner..? I'm sure there's a way, but I'm not totally aware of one atm..
Also, almost all your lands will be plains (don't forget your Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ) so the land base will be cheap if you're on a budget, which means... MORE cool costy angels
If you have any more suggestions or tips, I'll gladly help.. Angels are far and away my favourite creature type, and I have an Avacyn deck that has tons of thought put into it (that was built on a budget originally!)
Edit's were made once I realized some stuff made no sense, and I forgot to add a few tips
I can't help but put a Soldier of the Pantheon in every white deck, he's just way too good for a one drop in a mostly multicolour format Vampire Nighthawk is another creature I gotta throw in black decks Swiftfoot Boots is a card that I think might as well be thrown into almost any commander deck, waiting one more turn to get hexproof and haste is pretty awesome (same goes for Lightning Greaves but shroud isn't always wanted)

No Baneslayer Angel?! She's necessary I have TONS of fun playing Herald of War in my Avacyn Angels deck

Avacyn seems kinda' daunting at 8 mana, but there's so many ways to get her and other angels out earlier (as well as buff them!) Use Pearl Medallion, Lotus Bloom, Sol Ring, your Herald of War, Urza's Incubator, Coat of Arms, Door of Destinies, Caged Sun, and Gauntlet of Power (Honor of the Pure is an obvious card to put in to buff all your guys)
