Feb 20, 2018I've found Dark Confidant and Xathrid Necromancer are very powerful in grindier versions of the deck. Dropping them instant speed with aether vial helps get around some of the clunkiness.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Been meaning to try out Alesha, who smiles at death. I ran her a while back when she was printed; and had some success. I think a grindy-reanimator focus mardu humans build could be good
Feb 15, 2018Posted in: ModernI wish you could have told me this months ago.
Yeah the thing with packs is that the majority of the EV is locked up in chase mythics or masterpieces. That means for every 50 packs you open, only 1 or 2 is going to give you positive value. The trading thing could work if you bought a whole box at a time, as youll come out to neutral or positive EV in the end, but going pack by pack seems less likely.
Feb 12, 2018Sounds spicy! decklist?Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
yeah cutting amulet seems not great; as bloodsun is basically amulet 5-8.
Splendid Reclimation could be worth considering; although a bit harder to setup with deathcloud.
How's The Gitrog Monster working out? he seems sweet
Crucible of Worlds could be better than Ramunap Excavator if youre running deathcould
I wouldn't hate Wildfire in this deck either. Could be made to work.
I might cut some of the bigger creatures for something that survives deathcloud; like Garruk Wildspeaker
Im going to test this;
Feb 12, 2018The deck shakes off disruption pretty well. You usually trade 1-for-1 against creatures and disruption. Games usually stall out into topdeck mode, which is where phyrexian arena and pact shine; and then you basically take all the time in the world to either combo kill or use pact gideon and vents to beat them to death.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Tron is pretty rough tho. Getting your enchantment based removal wiped by an o-stone or ugin is usually game.
Feb 11, 2018Played a couple more matches with this deck today.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Managed to beat affinity a couple times pretty handedly; got manascrewed and lost to a land destruction deck of all things.
Gideon and demonic pact have been overperforming. Recycling pacts really lets you seal the long game.
Underworld Coinsmith has been underperforming. Originally i liked him as a combo enabler and a way to gain life against agressive decks, but in practice he only gains you 2 life then eats a lightning bolt, or gets completely blanked by bigger critters.
-3 Underworld Coinsmith
+3 Wall of omens
also artifact decks arent really a problem with all the relic warders.
-2 Stony Silence
-2 kor firewalker
+3 Path to Exile
Ill have another go tonight and post some videos
Feb 11, 2018Posted in: ModernI rather want to open one pack only and keep trading the contents of that pack to get better cards. Otherwise it would be way too expensive.
Yeah i got that. The reality of cracking packs and trading them, is you wont be able to trade for the value of the pack. The only real way to get +value out of packs is to draft with them at FNM and win more than you lose.
Buy a pack for $4 and the average contents is about $2 in value for trades. After all is said and done you'll have sunk $800 into your $400 modern deck iwth a lot of time spent trading. Pucatrade was ok for unloading chaff but it died a couple months ago. As fun as cracking packs is you might have better luck putting $4 aside a week and buying singles.
Feb 10, 2018If you dont mind playing online; things like Xmage are free. You can test out a bunch of modern decks, settle on the exact one you like, and then fork out the cash when you want to hit a tournament.Posted in: Modern
Its sounds like fun, only thing is that in my experience cracking packs is cash loss. You'll end up paying more for your deck in the end, but it could be a fun experiment
Feb 10, 2018Settle the WreckagePosted in: Modern
I could see this being a very powerful wrath in death and taxes builds. Plays nice with Leonin Arbiter and Aven Mindcensor. With all the deaths shadow/goyf/tasigur smash decks running around, this could be worth a look.
Feb 8, 2018Been tweaking an enchantment themed deck, and its been doing quite well.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
The deck runs the Oblivion Ring combo as its main wincon. If you have;
2 o-rings and a Leonin Relic-Warder or;
o-ring, a warder, and a Journey to Nowhere
You can generate infinite ETB triggers. Once you get infinite triggers Underworld Coinsmith nets you infinite life or Grim Guardian straight to the dome. The best part is at least one of those pieces can be on the field already, and you can just re-exile whatever was hiding when you decide to finish the loop.
With all the exile enchantment effects Demonic Pact was an obvious choice.
All the synergy cards are perfectly playable by themselves. Coinsmith hozes burn, Warder goes from "meh" to astounding depending on the matchup, and its not impossible to wipe the board and drain them to death with Guardian.
Lots of lifegain is great against burn, recurring pact crushes control decks, MD artifact hate against affinity, and you can usually stall long enough to combo out against some of the "go tall" creature decks like abzan or death's shadow.
Decks like Tron or Emrakul Breach have been pretty rough. Either way its a decently competitive deck thats a ton of fun to play if you're looking for something "out there"

An unconventional mana dork. Could see it sequencing something like Joraga treespeaker, with less power but a really high ceiling
