An Alliance and Horde embassey is totally what we need in Geneva.

I assume we'll just go under 'not interesting enough to invade'. Or see how far we get with diplomacy.

This is really funny. I'd like to see how the UN Office would react to Azeroth. Smile

Though hang on, your country is really mountainous, heavily fortified, holds vast amounts of monetary wealth (which should be interesting to the Alliance and the Horde, at least), and I hear your general civilian population has access to a lot of firepower as well... and your forces guard the Pope! :p

Plus, you and I are next door neighbors, at least from a country perspective. Wink

I don't know, I'd say Switzerland has a much better fighting chance than Austria.

As much as I would love to host another Tournament, I'm going to be busy with the military in the upcoming months. That said, I will gladly support anyone who takes up the mantle. Smile

I think it's safe to say the TOU clean-sweeped the entire set of bonus matches. Funny how these tournaments work. Smile

With my upcoming military service, I've been busy these past few weeks with logistical matters, gathering documents, and otherwise getting fit, so apologies for not updating you all. Come december, I will no longer be a frequent poster on MTGS (but I'll try), but it was a fun little run with you all while the TOC/TOU lasted. Wink

That said, thank you all for participating, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Grin

Anti-air, very cool! I have some friends who are in air defense positions in the US Army and they have good things to say about it. From what I've heard from them, very few people in their units are actually involved in shooting the missiles... they also have early warning radar units, launcher set-up and repair, etc. Basically a lot of people to support the few who are actually doing the fighting.

Thanks, that's great to know! Even if I don't get to fire a rocket launcher, it would be great to learn how to operate those things. :p

Here's a graphic that depicts the organization of the Austrian Armed Forces (unsure how current it is!): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a8/Austrian_Army.png. It shows an anti-air battalion at Zeltweg, which I assume is the same air base near where you live? If that's the case, it looks like you'll be with the air forces then.

All correct! Impressive. You're quite the detective for figuring out where I'm assigned. I didn't even mention Zeltweg. Smile

Basic training should be in Salzburg for a month though. Wink

    Quote from Rust Golem
Wikipedia also says that each infantry battalion in the Austrian Army has an anti-air battery assigned to protect as well. Here's the link for that as well (und auch in Deutsch! :D): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_Air_Force#Air_Defense_Systems.5B4.5D.5B11.5D.5B12.5D

That's something I overlooked while scanning through the articles about the military. Dankeschön! Wink

In some landlocked states in the US, we basically have the same joke about the Navy. For instance, the highest civilian honor in Nebraska (a landlocked state) is being designated a Nebraska Admiral. The citation is equally funny:

"And I [the Governor of Nebraska] do strictly charge and require all officers, seamen, tadpoles and goldfish under your command to be obedient to your orders as Admiral—and you are to observe and follow, from time to time, such directions you shall receive, according to the rules and discipline of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska."

That's hilarious, and I did not know that! Grin

I hope you don't mind if I share this little tidbit with my family. :p

Your input is much appreciated, Rust Golem! Smile

As predicted, this match looks like a blowout, but then again, I've seen worse. A comeback is very much possible. :p

Still two days left to vote. I'm also still deciding if we're going to have further bonus matches. I have a few ideas lined up, but I also think that now that the tourney is concluded, we should probably give it a break. Comments welcome. Smile

The villains are going to take this in a surprise victory if no one speaks up for the forces of good. :p

Which is poetic, because "evil triumphs when good men do nothing". Wink

They strapped him on a rocket and launched him in to space....

In the cartoon, they trapped him in the Phantom Zone, and in Superman: Doomsday, Supes outright killed him, by himself. :p

I think they avoid the obvious solutions because if they didn't, the story would be lame. Case in point, the plot of the new Superman movie could have been resolved a lot sooner than it should have if Superman had just thought a little more clearly. Wink

While CP is not the sharpest tool in the shed... Aang's wisdom should be worth something in this match, no? Kekeke

So does bolas have access to every single red, blue and black spell in all of magic? It seems like that's what many are implying with the arguments I'm seeing. Personally I think that's too far reaching and just lame. He's powerful, but he's not that powerful.

Technically, we had a ruling that the PWs would only be allowed to use the spells most closely associated with them. Still, sometimes we need to extrapolate. However, I do agree that in some cases people take it too far. :p

Do I really have to point out that a lot of things in WoW are due to "gameplay and story segregation"? :p

    In Warcraft lore:
    • You only live once (twice, if you're undead), but assuming you're killed both times, that's it.
    • Azeroth is much bigger than the scale used to represent it in WoW, or even the scale in the strategy games (Deathwing, for example, should be much, much larger than how he's represented in game; this only slides because Aspects can change their size and shape)
    • Characters never lose stamina nor need to eat because that's a staple in most video games (except Adventure Island and a few others)
    • Spells move slower than the naked eye because DPS needs to be calculable.
The list goes on. The point is, while Azeroth is represented through video games, let's not try to apply video game logic to the match. It will make our heads spin. Smile

That said, I'm still waiting for someone from a tiny state to speak up. I'm still wary of my current residence (Austria) being able to take Azeroth on, and even moreso of my other homeland (the Philippines). I still dont think either has much of a chance. Rolleyes

Do you have a choice on which component (ground or air) you will go to?

Pretty sure the Austrian Navy isn't an option. Grin

Funny you should ask, because I'm assigned to a "Fliegerabwehrbataillon" (anti-aircraft unit) at the closest barracks near my residence, which happens to be a very well-known air base. The military takes part in an "Air Power" event every two years (the web page linked is, mercifully, available in English) where aircraft units from all over were showcased. I attended the one in 2011, and the recruits were responsible for everything from crowd control on the ground to parachuting from helicopters in the air.

That said, I don't know if I'm going to be assigned to ground or air force. Where does an anti-aircraft unit go? None of my friends served in such a battalion, but if it matches my expectations, I should be learning how to launch anti-aircraft missles, which probably means I'll be on the ground. I never really considered the possibility that I might be assigned to go airborne. Smile

As for the joke about the Navy... hah, very funny! Running joke in the family is that I'll graduate as an admiral after my service. :p

Poring, I'm leaving for the U.S. Air Force's basic training in November, so military fitness is an issue that has been pretty important to me for quite some time now. I've managed to get in pretty good shape over the last two years in anticipation of my enlisting. If you'd like some suggestions on getting ready, please PM me.

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat! Looks like we've been training for about the same time frame and should be serving at around the same time, too. Advice would be welcome. I'll send you a PM. Thanks for the offer. Smile

The second. The first does not make sense in English; it would be "peace lovers".

You know, upon reading this, I decided to check out how the card in question is translated in different languages that I'm able to read/speak, to make sure that the flavor text means what it's supposed to mean.

The context apparently checks out in German and Spanish (and possibly French, but my French is lousy) as well, so I don't think we can say the language is in any way ambiguous, nor a mistake in printing. Translations are usually faithful if this was done intentionally on so many levels, and this evidence should counter any arguments that this was "unintentional" or that we're only "seeing what we want to see".

Proof? German version. Spanish version. French version. Anyone who can understand these languages/are native speakers, please feel free to verify. :p

I'm personally not a homosexual, however I do have friends who are gay, and I like that Magic is branching out to an acceptance of diversity among people in a cultural manner through card references. It's a good step forward. Smile
